Well damn. Here I was hoping we'd get Rosalina revealed. Guess not. I seriously wonder when they are going to show more newcomers though.
By the looks of it, E3 2014 where they'll also apologise for a 2015 release.

What a disappointing end to the week. Oh well.
After this and Pokémon X/Y's launches, I think we can be sure that game-release character confirmations are just as randomly possible as anything else Sakurai does with these updates, and certainly not a trend. :/

Not sure. But the VGX definitely isn't geared towards fans of Nintendo. At least that's how I feel from their past showings.
The funny thing about these updates, is that the possibilities for these random pics are nearly endless. It just depends on how far Sakurai is willing to go to consistently troll those drooling for info. I mean come on, I can replicate this picture in the last two Smash Bros. games. Lol.

Looks like we won't get that Zelda character reveal until December 26, when ALBW comes out in Japan. On that note, why is Japan getting it so much later than the rest of the world?

He definitely does, but my whole point is that Pokémon X/Y and Super Mario 3D World's Japanese release dates both came and went without any character reveal from Sakurai. That's proof enough for me that him revealing characters when new games release in Japan is just as random as anything else he does.
At this point, we have no reason to believe that ALBW's Japanese release will have anything to do with him revealing Zelda. :/
While I generally agree, there's a western base that absolutely loves Smash Bros, and during the E3 reveal at GTTV I think they were pointing out that it was the most hyped/discussed game after its reveal.

There's not just a western audience that loves Smash, people in general love Smash. Smash, like Mario Kart, is one of those Nintendo franchises people who love all kinds of consoles/franchises will almost always happily pick up and play with other people if they've a fondness for old school Nintendo.
VGA/VGX has generally catered towards the "blockbuster" style of game, and Nintendo has spent every year not really giving a shit. This is basically the first time they'll be making their presence known.

But several other character reveals did coincide with release dates. He literally puts in his posts "In celebration of ___'s release in Japan, here's _____". Therefore it is not as random as anything else. It's not a guarantee, but it does seem to be a fairly solid trend.

You're probably joking but I want to be serious since there are some people out there actually want that to happen: I don't think Persona is the kind of game that should be exclusive to Nintendo. Multiplat? Sure, that's fine. But it feels kind of wrong to suddenly to make Persona 5 exclusive to Nintendo systems for no reason when it has an established fanbase on Sony systems.
I can say the same to Crash but idk how relevant he is these days.

If Rosalina got in, I'm actually more intrigued by the design Sakurai would give her, considering how Peach got a redesign in Brawl, especially with her dress.
Believe me I wanted to use another pic to really pull off the fake but decided against it for now lol.

Miyamoto and company don't ever get tired of Bowser.
I'm afraid that Super Mario 3D World will be another New Super Mario Bros. 2. Another game with another good setup for another villain, that it is all thrown away for the purpose of extreme franchise formula safety. Nintendo can be so innovative and yet so predicable at the same time, I find it to be somewhat strange.

I'm looking at Brawl's starting roster, and it made me very curious what kind of starting roster are we getting for Wii U/3DS. I'm still hoping for more secret veterans become starter characters and three more newcomers.

Our first iteration, we only had 8 characters. We got 7 more characters in second iteration which pushed us into 15 characters. Sakurai managed to arriving at 23 characters for third iteration. Right now, we only have 18 confirmed characters so far and we still have a long way to go.
Here is a list of missing starter characters
I have a feeling that we might see few more secret veterans that will become starter characters such as Jigglypuff, Falco and Mr. Game and Watch, along with about three more newcomers. Once Sakurai revealed Toon Link, Marth, and Luigi, I started to have a weird vibe that we mightn't have unlockable characters in the game. It's possible for a reason is that we are getting two smash games at once so I have a feeling that Sakurai were concerned that we wouldn't be motivated to unlocking the characters on both iteration.
