How does xbox one cross-game party chat work?

It seems like users are having issues getting Xbox One party chat to work across games. Has there been any clarification on the expected behavior of this on the xbox one?

Below is some discussion in relation to this that can be found in the launch thread.

Edit: here is a video explaining how to get things working

Rant incoming

not sure if this deserves its own thread but how fucked is the party system

You have to create a party that corresponds to the game you are playing so some of your freinds cant join because they are not playing

me and some friend spent about 20 mins trying to get a private forza lobby going and just gave up...the system is completely fucked

you cant just simply invite to game like you could on the 360 (unless im missing something) and when one player puts in another game while others are playing the party game one or 2 people get kicked

its like they thought of a way to make playing with your friends even more complicated...the 360 method worked great...the one is just broken atm and god damn annoying

End Rant

How awesome is forza....apart from the above

I don't have one but my buddy said he and his friends couldn't get it to work. Same issue as the guy above.

Party system sucks and I hope they fix it soon

Other than that:

Battlefield 4 looks average but framerate is solid
Forza 5 is great so far
Killer Instinct seems fun but I'm hesitant to buy into it considering they only let you try one character
UI is nice, voice commands work well (aussie accent here)

But seriously fix friends and party asap

It's because all games have their own API's, just like how the PS3 handled it. They cannot fix this I think.

Seems to back up FamMort's claims of there being VOIP issues at launch. Also said they could last for months...

The short story is that Xbox Live and the OS, especially in functions that involve XBL, are a complete fucking mess. One source says we aren’t talking weeks until it works correctly but “months.” Things like parties dropping people when moving from one thing to another. Connectivity issues. Missed invites. Friend requests not working, etc.

“Let me get into some technical detail regarding it – on 360, the OS handles all of the party and chat functionality. All you do is hook up the XBL VOiP OS API into your game, and it does most of the work for you. With it results in is a shared experience across multiple entertainment. If you’re watching movies or playing games, you can do it together. However, this system is entirely different on Xbox One. So, lets say me, you, and Thuway have xbox one’s that are online. We are signed in our profiles. Sitting at the home screen, we are considered to be in a “Xbox Party” on the server. There are no more ‘party leaders’. With that said if any one of us decide to start a game, the party is shifted over to that game’s party system. Each game now has their custom written VOIP.” (Pete note: shoutout to thuway!)

I asked if could be fixed soon. He said that anything is possible and Microsoft is obviously working on it but he thinks it will be months, not weeks. Getting online launch games certified is taking so long that it’s pushing games after launch back.

So cross game chat does not work?

Ass storm? (Hate that term).

Well nothing is confirmed yet. We need some people that know what they are doing to test it for us.

I really hope this isn't the case. It was one of the main reasons I played on Xbox last gen for so long.

I don't get it.. Microsoft all you had to do was ask ANYONE what their favorite features from the 360 were. This would have come up. Instead you fuck it up?

Man.

So after all the Xbox fan boys screaming with laughter at the Sony lot because they couldnt do cross game chat, for next gen PS4 has it and it works flawlessly and then M$ goofed it up royally.

Im sure there will be an update but wow.

This can't be real, it's Microsoft after all. How can they mess things like Party Chat when they had that tech for a long while...

That + long installs. I'm kinda happy i haven't bought one yet. I was thinking of going early in the morning to buy a bone but i'll happily wait until feb-march before buying one.

How do you fuck something up like this when you had it perfect last generation? Both companies are going backwards in several areas.

no way this is true.

kinect voice not working at all, I can believe
snap being leggy, I can believe
blurry drive eating disk, I can believe

but no cross game party chat. no freaking way. I thought this was MS strength.

Okay I own a PS4. I launch party chat and invite folks. When I play COD the system logically switches between chat or game. Someone explain to me what's different here when the 360 worked great?

edit: Okay Miles post has great detail. hmmmm

Wait a min. I choose Xbox Live/360 over PSN/PS3 for this very reason. It worked so well on 360 that when a friend and I tried some games online on PS3 we were frustrated with party chat / chat in general. Ugh. I need to stop reading these things until my One arrives.

Okay from what Miles is posting this is just random folks who either don't know what the hell their doing or spotty internet?

Except for the stupid "M$" thing he is not wrong.

Lack of cross game chat was something people bashed the PS3 for and held up as the reason why Live was superior to PSN.

Apologies, I thought I bolded that part of the post. It such a stupid thing to do...

I do agree with the general point though, but it seems it might not be true if Colonel Nasty is to be believed. We need more testing though...

Maybe it's just a nat problem with the folks reporting problems?

360 party chat tends to go crazy with a moderate nat.

Others have had problems with it.

Could be on a per game basis, FIFA and BF4 are both EA titles......... maybe that's why it working with no issues there.

will learn eventually
Wasn't CBOAT saying exactly that? That the cross game chat / party chat system is completely broken?

Sooo...

No one in this thread actually has an XB1 and is posting with 1st hand knowledge?

Seems like it, I think everyone who has an XB1 on GAF is currently playing :). I should be getting mine in a few hours so I'll be sure to test this.

Good point. We need someone to boot up DR3 and attempt cross chat with someone playing Fifa or Forza. Hopefully X1 owners will see this thread and respond.

Was that party chat or skype? Is there a difference?

He wasn't clear, I assume it's party chat? Not sure if there's a difference, I assume there is. Can you party chat on Skype?

We had three guys in a party last night I live closest to gamestop so I had the system up and running first. My BF4 installed finished first so I started to install FIFA and play it while one other guy was finishing his battlefield install playing single player and the other guy was waiting on Ghosts to install but never left the dashboard so I dunno if that matters. Three dudes doing different things all in a party. However, at first we were in a Party and couldn't hear each other and had to go into the chat and turn on party chat on manually for some reason so that was weird. It worked fine for us and the clarity is amazing. Maybe it was the bigger ear piece but it sounded better than my phone.

I have 2 actually. One coming from amazon and one from GameStop. However, id like to know what the deal is with party chat.

The people in the OP have them of course and have opened them.

Uhm maybe just switch your pre-order to a PS4 instead then, if that was THE feature that made you buy a Xbox 360/One over the PS3/PS4.

You get more bang for your buck.

Ah , cool. It would suck if they happened to mess up one of the best things they've done right previously.

Thanks for the feedback. Very weird that you now have to turn on party chat.
