Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

Y'all know you want it. Also, Henry as an assist trophy. BELIEVE.

Every possible Mario newcomer has pros and cons. To me at least, it's difficult to finger one as the Best Possible Option.

Toad
+Easily the most important option to the Mario series
+Recent resurgence in Mario 3D World
+Could have moves based on NSMBW, 3D World, Mario 2, etc.
-Is more common as a generic species than a specific character
-Recently the line between the character and species has been blurred further with the Blue Toad and Yellow Toad in NSMBW and Blue Toad in 3D World

Bowser Jr.
+Villain rep!
+Quite prominent in most recent Mario games
+Could have a cool moveset based on paint and fire, or even pull from the other Koopalings' move pool
-Not all that popular
-Could end up a Bowser clone

Waluigi
+Villain rep, sorta kinda?
+Pretty popular in the spinoffs
+Could have a neat moveset based on the spinoffs, from setting Mario Party traps to using sports equipment to tossing bombs
+Goes well with Wario
-Zero prominence outside of the spinoffs
-Not a whole lot he can do that other characters can't

Daisy
+Female rep
+Pretty popular in the spinoffs
+Could have a spinoff-based moveset, or maybe pull from Mario Land
-Very similar to Peach aesthetically
-Little prominence outside of the spinoffs
-Not a whole lot she can do that other characters can't

Rosalina
+Female rep
+New, popular character with increasing prominence
+Could have a Galaxy-based moveset
+Goes well with Good Egg Galaxy as a stage
-Similar to Peach aesthetically
-Less prominent than most, as she is the newest of the characters

Paper Mario
+Represents a VERY popular spinoff series
+Potentially could have a very unique moveset based on his partners and moves in the series
-Is another version of Mario
-Could, if Sakurai is that cruel, be a Mario clone
-Latest game wasn't well received

Exactly what I would've compiled if I were to elaborate on my statements.
I also would add that Bowser Jr. and Rosalina have additional potential for interesting movesets due to the fact that both have "weapons" that we have yet to see in the game - Rosalina uses a magical wand, which could easily be utilized together with star-based magic to make her different from other magic users (Zelda in particular), while Bowser Jr. would be the first potential polearm user if he utilizes his paint brush in regular moves.

The thing with Waluigi is he's a blank canvas as far as stuff he could do. Personally I think he would be great with a new set of mechanics that wouldn't necessarily fit other characters. But his character design is brilliant and he's such a good villainous sort of character that fits a type that Nintendo doesn't have much of yet. He's not the "lovable oaf villain" that so many of their other ones are. He's weird and sinister.

I could see him as a "troll/trickster" sort of character, where he drops banana peels to make you trip, or swaps real items with fake ones that backfire on the user if picked up, throws comically huge bombs, etc. Maybe if you fall for one of his tricks, he gets a power boost, or loses percentage, or whatever. He could also have some ability where his transfers some of his percentages onto other characters. He could use his spike whip from Strikers to grapple/throw.

Just spitballing here.

And of course, the taunt:

They've all been more relevant in the past 5 years then K Rool or Little Mac or most other popular potential newcomers people like to rattle off.

Leave Mac out of this. Punch Out!! Wii performed well in the states.

Oh and one thing nobody has said about the enemy train from today's screen shot is that if it hits you it's a ohko so there is a possibility that it may be able to instantly kill someone if it rams and explodes

I guess Waluigi could be made interesting even if i don't like him.

K rool is just as bad. Little Mac actually seems like he could be kind of cool. I don't care how relevant a character is, that has no bearing on how much i would like them.

What other somewhat popular Mario characters are there, then? Or generally, Nintendo characters?

I'd have to think about it. If there aren't any better options that doesn't make the mentioned ones any more appealing to me.

evil trains ( ‾ʖ̫‾)

also what odd timing sakurai decides to take a snapshot of a train level. the smashGAF IRC's current topic says "TRAINS ARE COOL TOO" and I only really put that because I was idling in some game at the time where the character constantly said that as his idle voice clip lol

I wouldn't like a lot of the suggested characters - any character related to Zelda, for instance, mostly bores me.

But how much you like a character isn't what makes them popular - and it's very likely mostly popular characters that are going to be chosen. That's why we ended up with Mega Man and Villager; those series are huge, and the fan demand for at least Mega Man has been there since after Smash 64.

Calling characters that have been regularly appearing in Nintendo's biggest and most-selling franchise "bottom of the barrel" seems a bit... y'know? I'm pretty sure more people are familiar with Waluigi, Rosalina or Toad than there are people who are familiar with Little Mac, any Fire Emblem character that's been mentioned in this thread, or hell, even Ridley.

I mean, we've got to be realistic. Mario getting a newcomer is not out of the question, and seems fairly likely - and out of the characters available, I think that there's only so few that aren't already in the game (even if they're representing their own series as well such as DK or Wario) - the characters that are being thrown around the most are the ones that seem to be the most popular of those that are remaining and/or have been pushed by Nintendo lately.

The characters I'd want to be in are mostly from obscurer series or single games. I'm just trying to make the best out of what seems likely to me, y'know?

I do not think anyone over there views waluigi important enough to give him the captain falcon treatment. Dude is just a space filler, thats it.

This needed to be said. Waluigi and Daisy exist to fill in spots in spinoffs. Neither get any recognition in the main series (Heck, Waluigi cant even make it into Wario Land / Ware) which is telling of how the rest of Nintendo views of their importance to the Mario IP. It honestly baffles me that Waluigi was even given an assist trophy in the first place.

Well, he wasn't in MK7. For a moment I thought even Nintendo despised him ;_; Thankfully he's back in MK8.

Well, according to the director of MK7, they wanted to add more new characters, thus had to cut a few older ones, and that Waluigi didn't fit that well with the "game's charm".
Though it makes me wonder how Queen Bee and especially Metal Mario did. :P

Who seriously asked for the Queen Bee? Of all things... MK7's roster was weird

Yeah, all the new characters to MK7's roster were ... odd choices, except Shy Guy. I also liked Wiggler cause of his angry animation if he gets hit, but even then, he, and especially Lakitu, Queen Bee and Metal Mario were such weird choices.

And its not like there aren't any alternatives to fill the roster with when you have access to the different Kongs as well as a few notable others like Kamek.

I liked Shy Guy, Wiggler, and Lakitu but Metal Mario was a waste and Queen Bee was just odd.

I think Queen Bee was included to give an option for a heavy weight female driver, and that's all there is to that lol.

Yeah, I agree. Kamek would've been a great choice, and there's not only the Kongs - I mean, if you can do a DKC character in MKWii (and other Mario spin-offs like the Baseball game), then you could also bring in characters from the Yoshi or Wario Land/WarioWare series. They're related as much to Mario as DKC.

Which brings me back to Captain Syrup. Goddamnit I want her in Smash, Sakurai. >:C

I think the lack of waluigi in mk7 was the only reason dk was knocked down from heavyweight to cruiser weight...or he cut back on the bananas.

To be honest daisy has a bit more relevance because she is supposed to be Luwiggie's girl, and I could see her being used as the goal in the next Luwiggie mansion games.
But waluigi? he is just filler space, he has no real connection to no body, wario has friends in wario ware and has a foe in captain syrup in the wario land games she happens to be featured in. The most waluigi got is a villian in a dance spin off game, embarrassing. And I agree, how the hell did he even get to be an assist.

Daisy has as strong of a relationship with Luigi as Waluigi has with Wario. It was entirely manufactured by the spinoff titles to give Luigi a female princess counterpart, when that has absolutely nothing to do with her original appearance (Luigi isn't even in Super Mario Land). I highly doubt Daisy will ever appear in a Luigi focused game--it's just as likely as Waluigi appearing.

Waluigi was almost certainly an Assist Trophy because he's more popular than most people give him credit for.
