Super "NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread" II TURBO

Companies have mentioned that some USB devices will work, but it's up to the developer in most cases. The big question here will be answered when there's a major mainstream fighter available on the system. Plus, I mean, come on. All my PS3 Move stuff works fine with my PS4. So, your whole "NEVER" situation doesn't even apply to this console.

The major companies despite the PR spiel and half-hearted attempts at damage control will very likely DISCOURAGE backwards compatibility with most controllers. They have hundreds of millions of dollars invested in the new consoles that they want to make back as soon as possible. They get nice licensing fees from third party controllers and peripherals. They will NOT collect that money if they allow or nudge software developers to put in code for past-gen controllers. They avoided this whole issue in the past by changing cord connectors between systems which is why Genesis controllers don't plug into Saturns or Dreamcasts and vice-versa.

MS doesn't really care, period... I'd say it's actually in Sony's best interests to NOT encourage backwards compatibility considering all the money that was lost on the PS3 and the cell processor. (I am NOT saying I would agree with that stance by Sony but seeing as how MS seems to get away with everything and the fanboys don't seem to mind taking it in the rear every time as long as they get their Halo...! There's more than a little hypocrisy in the gaming community there.) A very few end users -- the FGC is very small by comparison to the larger gaming community -- may not agree with that but they haven't seen the Sony balance sheets which from most reliable reports have not been pretty for years!

**And backwards compatibility has never been the big thing with consoles until Sony made a point of it with the PS2.** That point came back to bite Sony with the PS3 and its already exorbitant development costs. It would have been much better to NOT have included the PS2 chips in that system from the get-go. It's a safe bet that most of us who have BWC PS3's never seriously used them much to play PS2 games. For those of us who have import PS2 games, BWC doesn't help at all unless you have a launch Japanese PS3!

FYI, not all USB controllers from PS2 are generally useful on PS3, either. The Hori Flight Stick 2 that was marketed with Ace Combat 5 has NEVER been supported on PS3 flight games. You had to buy NEW flight sticks to play on PS3... The same Hori FS2 had to have custom drivers made for it to work on the PC as well so this business about every generic USB controllers working on all USB supporter consoles/computers is simply not true!

Go back and do some research before you tell me I don't know what I'm talking about! Very few consoles have made a point of backwards compatibility... MOST controllers only worked between different generations of consoles because some gamers who were electrical engineers/hobbyists developed replacement PCB's or cable converters to make them work. Cable converters themselves are NOT useful unless the control laws stay the same irregardless of physical changes in system connections. That's why PS1/PS2 games were able to work with USB converters on PS3. Heck, that's why most older system pads could work with the right electrical work... (Dreamcast pads excluded, though.)

BWC was used as a point of grasping straws for as big a consumer base as possible (Atari 7800) or PR move to get the consumers on-board with a new console and make them feel at ease, like any of these console companies gave a huge damn about the end-user or keeping their old games... That's never been their interest! The only recent console where the BWC helped was the Wii. In that case, most of the GOOD games really were from the Gamecube!

Now with the implementation of security chips, USB this-or-that is elementary B.S. ... The controllers will NOT work unless you have the security chip and the proper drivers for them if you want to use them on PC. That's a lesson the XBox fanboys had to learn over 3 years; some of them (and the PlayStation fanboys now with the PS4 and repeated warnings about the compatibility issues) are apparently still deaf because they haven't gotten the message despite being written in bold black for over 3 years now.

Again, do NOT expect the hardware companies to reward you by allowing you to use last gen's controllers -- especially joysticks(!) -- on current systems. You've just paid them $400 and $500 + tax to have the privilege of playing PS4/XBox One on launch day. You've proven the point that you're willing to pay for the experience ASAP... Why are they going to cut you a deal on controllers??? This is a kind of cock-eyed cheapness that I never expected to see from people who don't blink at paying several hundred dollars for used arcade game cabinets and PCB's but blanch when they're told a new joystick is going to cost them $150-$200! Hell, the wireless pads are $60!

lol @ calling 400 dollars, minimum, to play fighting games with two people on a console "cock-eyed cheapness." You can kindly shove your pro-corporate BS. Fact is it's fucked up that both companies are cock blocking standard USB inputs. I don't give a fuck why they do it. I don't care if it's good for their bottom line. It's bad for consumers and we should bitch about it when it happens.

Just got this one of a kind badboy!

and the somewhat interesting story of how the stick came to be from Arcadeshock's FB page:

"Old school fight stick with the latest technology. MAS finally finished our custom stick, 8 years later, but the story doesn't end there.

In order to get this stick done, we provided MAS with all the Official Capcom Art that we had, control panel, button and joystick overlays, Capcom art stickers.

At the surface, we wanted this stick to look like a joystick ripped out of the Super Turbo Arcade cab and it does down to the nuts and bolts, but at the same time, wanted the modern technologies in control and functionality.

The stick looks like your typical HAPP Competition stick, but we had MAS take it a step further. The switches in them were ripped out and replaced with Sanwa (or OMRON Microswitches) for better precision. And oh, does it perform. But why stop there?

Concave pushbuttons? Classic look, feel, but compared to today's Sanwa Denshi pushbuttons, accuracy cannot touch that...unless you replace their switches, which was done to perform like an OBSF30.

Dual Functionality: Instead of opting for just PS/PS2 controls, we took out a QanBa PCB and embedded it into this stick to allow PS3/PC/XBOX360 controls. An analog switch in the back allows us to toggle between the systems.

So the story didn't end with just there. We certainly didn't expect this stick 8 years later. We met up with MAS to go over some other projects in the works and this stick was just sitting there and to our amazement, we said "you finally got our stick done and found all the artwork we gave you." MAS laughed and said that "We already put it up on Ebay." Whoa? What?"

And I was lucky enough to win the auction.

haha, that stick that d0c_zaius posted even has more of a story!

couple months ago before evo i was at a session and we were all pretty drunk and the subject of arcade sticks got brought up and one guy was like he wanna buy john choi's mas stick and our other friend was like he could make that happen for 1000 bux or something outrageous like that. so my friend was like ok he'll buy it, set it up.

so my friend making the deal is making the deal and we all continue to play games and get more drunk. i bounce and those guys pass out at the place. then guy wanting to buy the stick woke up the next day and said nah he don't wanna buy it he just said it cause he was drunk. so whatever. it was all a good laugh because my friend making the deal thought he was gonna get a a piece of that 1000 bux for being the middleman haha.

me being me i tell the guy wanting to buy the stick that we can make a stick better than choiboy's stick. we can make whatever he wants as long as he knows what he wants.

so the guy kept the idea of making a mas stick kinda like choiboys with multiconsole and wico p360. the only thing was how he wanted the art to look because it would be pretty bunk to just copy choiboys art. so he came up with this idea of all the capcom art to look like an american sf2 woody cab.

so he bought the overlay, stick/button stickers, yellow side art sticker, and buncha silver front capcom stickers. he wanted me to lay it all out and wire it up and i was like sure ok just bring everything so we can lay it out and plan it so everything can be exactly the way he wanted it.

so a few months pass because it was taking time to source everything. another thing that was kinda holding up the project was getting a wico p360 joystick with the wico dustcover in good condition. he really wanted everything to be perfect and was in no rush to get things started. one day he finally had everything needed to lay it out so he brought all the stuff over to be measured on one of the 6 button og mas sticks i had.

everything looked like it could be done easy with no problem until we layed out the button art. the og capcom button art was spaced different than the stock mas button spacing so we were like FAAAAAAAAA! what do we do! so i'm like fug it, contact the mas guy and see if he will make you a custom box with the proper layout to match the capcom sticker. he's dealt with the mas guy before to buy sticks direct so it seemed like an easy idea.

so he contacts the mas guy and he's like sure he'll do it, since he was making a total custom box my buddy had the idea to add a switchcraft rj45 connector so we could use a multiconsole pcb and add top/bottom plexi to protect the stickers. the mas guy was like sure just send the measurements for all the cuts.

at this point i tell my friend dude you have to make everything exact so probably the easiest thing to do would be to photocopy everything then cut to match so the mas guy can have a template. my buddy ended up sending the mas guy an empty mas box with all the art photocopied and cut to size taped to the stick box and where he wants the holes for the switchcraft and st/sl/home buttons.

so my buddy sends the stick and the mas guy gets the package and then the mas guy contacts him like maybe it would be easier if my friend just sends the art and he mounts everything.

in our minds we were thinking mas guy builds the box then we mount the art because we want the stick mounting to be under the art so there are no visible bolts. like once you unpeel those stickers you gotta commit. i even asked my friend to ask the mas guy to make the box so the joystick bolts would sit flush with the top. we figured since he would do all the custom cuts it would be no problem but i guess the mas guy insisted that he send all the art so i guess my friend was like fuggit so he sent the art. what could happen!

so few weeks pass and i basically forget all about it then one day my buddy calls me up and seems kinda upset. he's like dude checkout this ebay auction. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n5/akuma001/ScreenShot067_zpsc16757b3.png

i was like wtf wow! did the mas guy just take all my friend's sticker crap and copy it for the mas opticon box? pretty cool but pretty bunk for my friend. i admit i thought it was funny as hell but i'm a bad friend so whatever.

so he contacts the mas guy and i think he asked him to take down the auction but the mas guy was like this is nothing like the case he's building for him. so he's like whatever but probably still mad. the ebay auction finishes and some dude gets a stick somewhere out there in the world and that would be that.

so my friend gets his box and it comes out ok. switchcraft and back buttons are kinda not aligned right and mas dude just sticks some wood screws in the bottom for mounting the joystick which i thought was kinda bunk. so the case is at my house and i'm basically waiting for some tech flex for organizing the wiring.

here it is, stick isn't mounted yet because i want to wire it up first before we commit to using the wood screws.

fastforward to yesterday and i'm looking at facebook and i see d0c_zaius posting pics of the ebay stick!. wow what a small world, someone i know bought the other stick. so i message him and ask him about it and sure enough he bought it.

and now here i am reading about how arcadeshock saying they had a similar idea. haha all pretty funny coincidence.

anyways i thought i would mention this story cause i don't want my friend to look like a biter if someone asks about his stick.

the end!

Mad Catz' Killer Instinct Arcade FightStick TE2 Launch Info

Is it possible to still order at the new site?

I keep getting kicked out...charged then refunded in a few minutes. And the order never stays. The customer service rep simply told me he would pass it on to the tech dept and that they were also not available for preorder yet.

Initially I had a preorder with the old site but cancelled because I had to buy tickets back to cali for the holidays and figured I'd just order once it came in stock. No luck though.

Thinking I might just have to go with amazon for the second week of December.

Gonna be tough playing KI on a pad for a few weeks!

Yes it's possible to still order for next shipment. Sorry to hear about your issues, I can check on Monday with the team to see what's up.

Ah, it is no biggie. The rep was asking me about browsers and stuff. I figured I'd just use my cali address and grab it in early december when it shows as in-stock at the site. last resort being Amazon on the 13th. Take it back with me over the holidays. Got plenty to play with the Nintendo stuff now! But, I know once I download KI tomorrow I'm gonna want a stick!

As someone who owns a stick but doesn't really follow any of this stuff, is there some kind of third party hardware solution that would make "last gen" sticks work on current gen consoles? The equivalent of a PS2 to USB adapter? It's probably way too soon, but you'd hope someone is working on something.

I just bought the Mayflash Universal PS3/PS2/PC stick because I needed a cheap PS3 stick, and so far I do like the feel of it, especially considering how cheap it was, but I really don't like the face buttons being in the middle, does anyone know if I can change that? The box didn't come with a manual, so I don't know if they so how to in there and google hasn't been much help.

The buttons are rubber membranes pushing down onto a sub-PCB that passes the input to the main PCB via either a ribbon cable or a direct connector IIRC. You're probably out of luck here I'm afraid.

You can probably wire into the ribbon that passes to the main PCB. I did that with a similar stick. It works fine.

was HRAP3SE ever released here in america? or only the HRAP3 SA?

Just the HRAP 3 SA was officially released in the US. It was very easy to find for over a year after the official release. Not so easy to find now...

You had to special-order/import the HRAP 3 SE.

I got my HRAP 3 SE through Akihabarashop.jp --
Honestly, there's no difference in the cases. They have identical joystick mounts (universal for JLF and LS-series joysticks), the same case, the same baseplate, etc... The only thing different is the lettering on the faceplate that says "Special Edition" instead of "Special Addition". You have to look at the SE longer to notice the difference!

The only American joystick vendor that gets limited editions (the Amazon.jp deals, not character art joysticks) is ArcadeShock now.

I got my Diamond VLX HRAP through those fellows. Kept the buttons on it but replaced the JLF with a Seimitsu LS-32-01 lever. Still have the JLF, though, in case I do decide to sell the VLX which doesn't seem likely now.

In all honestly, other than a few offerings of Qanba's with Seimitsu parts (something exclusive to Arcade Shock in the US), Seimitsu-equipped joysticks are few and farther between. You pretty much have to re-equip with Seimitsu parts. I don't bother to change anything besides the JLF unless I'm doing something that requires transparent buttons (character art) or different colors. I have bought PS-15's and Pearl buttons in a few cases. I'm good with Sanwa buttons... it's the JLF I can't stand!
Seimitsu itself seemed to be a more popular parts supplier in the 1990s than it is now. There were a number of joysticks made back in that era that had clone Seimitsu parts if not official Seimitsu parts in them. These include the Capcom Power Stick for the SNES and at least two models of the Virtua Stick for the Sega Saturn. The only full-up, licensed Seimitsu joystick I recall seeing is Konami's Hyper Joystick for the PS1. Very few people have that joystick now in the States. It was a Japanese market exclusive.

Hori basically dropped the non-Sanwa HRAP's (a few years AFTER Mad Catz got into the joystick market with the TE's) and everything they do in the HRAP line has Sanwa parts except for the very limited Seimitsu joysticks. Before, it used to be the HRAP's had JLF control levers but the buttons were awful Hori-stock buttons. The HRAP SA and SE's were limited production models until the HRAP V3/VX design replaced the original Astrocade cab-modelled HRAP's. ALL HRAP V3/VX models (except the SE editions) have been full Sanwa editions. Even the HRAP V3/VX seems to be more limited now. The standard HRAP now is the HRAP N3/NX design introduced last year around the time of Soul Calibur V. All HRAP N3/NX's have been SA models, too. So far, no HRAP N3 SE's to date.

There have been more official, "unlimited" releases of XBox 360 joysticks with Seimitsu parts than there have been official PS3 joysticks with Seimitsu parts. I count maybe 2 HRAP releases for the PS3 that had Seimitsu parts -- HRAP 3 SE and the the green variant HRAP V3 SE that was an Amazon.jp exclusive. The more recent HRAP VX SE Kai looks a lot like the HRAP V3 SE did...

I stayed up till 3am last night to snag one of those Tekken Hybrid TEs from the namco store. Deal looks to be dead now - many of the games don't add to cart and neither does the stick.

same, i waited for that clock to hit 12:01!, i snagged one just in time it seems, but they were all out of tekken games, so i had to double purchase SCV haha.

I got in way after. I was able use WiiU TTT2 as my game.

I had one in my cart at about 6am this morning. But they only had the old Tekken games and I wanted the newer Tag versions. I decided not to go for it (I did buy one a few years back).

It is a truly class, class stick. Right up there with things like the VLX and VSHG. Definitely the MC showpiece.

Congrats to any new owners! After being available for Couple years it looks like the 1000 might finally be gone!

Anybody have any contenders for this year's Arcade Stick of the Year (ASotY)?

I only got a half dozen...most rather humdrum. Probably my most interesting (non)stick is my big Hatsune Miku but nothing else really seems to have stood out.

Guess I'm waiting for the TE2 to see if that edges out everything else. Will most likely be my pick, I'm guessing. White Fighting Edge would most likely be lock for me but that is looking early 2014.

Anybody have a favorite?

I wish I could partake in more sticks, though if I had to go with the 2 I'd want most it would be the Fighting Edge for aesthetics and the TE2 for pure modability and build. I would rather like to have a TE2 just to drop a PS360+ into and swap my seimitsus easily.

i know qanba q1 cut is from last year, but the 360 version was this year, so, that'll be my pick.

it's not the most premium joystick out there for sure.. but it's cute, creative (yeah i dig the clamps), and as a modder, there's a lot of potential. As an out-of-the-box stick, sure it doesn't compare to other higher end ones... qanba parts are kinda meh, but really it's no better than hori parts, which is tolerable, but the jlf clone in it is one of the better ones, i dig the sizing of the octo gate they have. the white Q1 Cut aesthetically looks pleasing too. so yeah that's my pick.

I also dig the MadCatz TekkenTag2 stick, i thought having NO CHARACTERS at all on the default artwork was a nice touch, and the cracked effect is pretty ballsy, im honestly surprised namco agreed to that haha. And it made the NOIR layout more available, which imo is the best layout next to the astro/sega.

2013!

I say this with absolutely no bias.

I have two (for different reasons)...

As far as something new (not a re-skin), I like the TE2 over all the rest (I do my homework for these things). I disregard stuff like console compatibility because I know the rules that companies have to play (or break, in some situations) as far as licensing goes. The TE2 is the most fully featured arcade stick for it's price point.

As for pure collectable factor (including re-skins), I have to go with the QanBa Q2 PRO LED.

Also, as for R.I.P. arcade sticks this year, I'm sad the Hori RAP AX S+G didn't come to market (did not meet pre-order demand).

Yeah, the shooter sticks just can't get a break :-( The genre might not even make it to PS4/One...just gotta take a wait and see. That AX would have been the new standard for the genre. Oh well.

Can't wait till I get the TE2! That and the WRAP have been my most anticipated. WRAP does not work with my Go so that kinda bummed me out.

Looking out for 2014! Might get our first Hori PS4 stick. And I'm sure you guys will be bringing a couple!

(2013 was a good year for me stick-wise, as I finally got my big Saturn Stick!)

great read. I was totally there in conspiracy for the Choi reproduction. Good times!

this is Reg btw, sup Jay.

haha sup Reg!

for people that don't know MezzoForte, he is the guy who looks at your custom stick and says thats nice and then thinks to himself...

<MezzoForte> but not as nice as my 2 hrap special editions!

what a jerk!

I just pre-ordered the TE2 Killer Instinct Stick from Amazon. I'm really excited to get some new art on it, play with the various after market buttons, etc.

What type of paper do you suggest for custom art? I am pretty excited, MarkMan. The video was great.

MezzoForte, if you ever want to sell an SE, mine could use a buddy. :)

Or just the box. I have one without box :(

LOL, I'm know somewhere down the line you'll find another. I'm not sure if I ever mentioned, but my two SEs I actually scored within a week of each other. One off YAJ and the other from a sad man on SRK that didn't feel the need to keep his. Straight UNICORN odds.

the SE is the unicorn indeed.

Couple of new Horis showed up on amazon japan. A new WRAP and a standard. Hori.jp also has redone their site (and also lists both flavors of the White FE).

Both sticks are branded Hayabusa and have Vewlixy type graphics...so perhaps the Hori proprietary parts, I'm guessing:

I have been toying around with the idea of getting a stick for my 360 to play some of the classic shmups on that system; I already own Deathsmiles and I want to pick up Espgaluda 2 and Mushihimesama Futari. From my research, it seems like the consensus is use Seimitsu hardware for shmups. The question I have is, what is the cheapest option for a Seimitsu stick for the 360?

I see that Amazon sells the HRAP3 EX-SE used for ~$110, but I'm not sure if I want to risk that. I could build my own stick, but I do not have the tools to build a case so buying a case, PCB, and hardware comes close to $200. The only Seimitsu 360 stick I could find is a Qanba Q2 PRO from ArcadeShock for $200. Otherwise, I could buy a Madcatz 360 Sanwa stick off Amazon for $100 and swap the hardware but that seems like such a waste. Are there any other options?

There's also the HRAP VX-SE but that's import only and would be more expensive.
Another option would be to track down a Madcatz Standard Edition stick and swap out the crappy stock parts for Seimitsu.

I say just go with the EX-SE from Amazon. It's my favorite X360 stick.
