Do you keep pointless things in your home?

Horse Detective

Why the long case?
Whenever I move and it is time to unpack, I always feel like I haven't learned my lesson about minimalism with item storage. I have mercy on several random objects at the consideration that they may have a use at some point. Luckily it hasn't leaked into my living space, but I am really just acknowledging the fact that there are several things lying around that I will never use, and will never have a purpose of being on display.

Anyway, do you attempt a borderline minimalist/ full blown minimalist lifestyle? Do you thrive on clutter? Do you care?

I've purged a lot of items over the past months, old console, toys, furniture, clothing I never wear, lots of paper. Things I've never touched or had any use for but still keep for some nostalgic value or just because I think I might need them in the future.

Most of them are gone now. The act of purging feels kind of therapeutic. I feel better not seeing pointless things around me.

I'm moving next month and leaving just about everything minus my clothes and computer for the next guy that moves in. It'll feel so good.

Chances are my girlfriend will have enough junk for the two of us anyway.

Yes.. tons of crap that we don't need/use.

More my wife than me.

Every time we go shopping I ask her.. "Where are we going to put that..?"

She wants one of those stupid "soda stream" things. One use devices that seldom get used like that drive me insane. That piece of crap is going to sit on my counter every day for the one bottle of soda you make a month? Gimme a fucking break.

Oh yeah man I have uttered those same words, stay minimalist but then I end up with stuff I should throw away but don't have the heart to get rid of. It's not hoarders bad but it should go.

In the garage and home office? Dumb pointless shit galore. Rest of the house? Boyfriend would burn it all if i tried.

was wosre when I was younger.

The older I get, the less I tolerated useless crap in the house.

Back in my early 20s, I would waste money on plastic figures. Now I don't tolerate them in my house since they waste space and look stupid .

I got these old gaming mags that I used to buy but I don't play any of these games for them, I got strategy guides for fighting games that not getting rid of because too many squeals came afterwards make the earlier ones useless.

I am also pondering of backing up all my music CDs and locking up the physical CDs into a box and stuff in darkness of the back of storage

Since the apartment is being renovated and many things are in boxes and garbage bags, I realized that we have a crap ton of stuff including a massive video game collection that my brothers and I have amassed throughout the years, a bunch of paintings that I've done, massive amounts of books and old notebooks. I think I'm gonna give some away, sell some of them, and leave a few in the main lobby. We threw out a bunch of crap but have more stuff to get rid of.

My mother likes to hold to on to things including this stupid exercise bike that she only uses once in a blue moon which clutters up her room. I think we have to throw out a bunch of crap and let go of the sentimental value attached to it.

I'm starting to realize the importance of buying games digitally now which I still haven't come to terms with; I ordered a bunch of physical games these past 2 days.=/

A ton of useless stuff. In my desk right now is: a big pencil, a small pencil i stole from Ikea, an empty brown marker, three dead AA batteries, a yo-yo, a Rubik's cube (that i've given up on solving), a pen that doesn't work, a notepad (sorta scribbled), my old iphone's casing even though the phone is deader than dead, a Disney comic, some gloves that i never use, a wide angle adapter (which i'll never commit the sin of using), my old broken glasses, random papers, a heart shaped stress ball, and a huge ethernet cable.

Welp.

You don't realize how much random bullshit you've got until you've paid movers nearly two thousand dollars to move it and they don't even finish/you have to schlep the last 30-40% of it yourself into the wee hours of a frigid morning.

I have a wall of dead Apple electronics.
It's junk, but also a memento, and a warning against anyone that dares suggest i help them repair their Mac.

I've got a problem with collecting junk that I inherited from my mother who seems to never throws anything out unless its clearly 100% trash.

I've gotten better over the years at determining what to keep. Recently I went through a bunch of my stuff that was in storage and threw away 3 garbage bags of crap and have a few more heading to goodwill.

One of these days I'll clean out my closet and throw away a bunch of clothes I no longer need or want. Or donate the ones that are actually wearable. I'll probably make this a new years resolution as my sets of work clothes are all in need of replacement soon anyways.

I used to have that problem as well. I used to have stacks and stacks of papers from high school in my closet. I also had other things like past projects, old game magazines, and unusable dumbells in there.

I cleaned out my closet last month and now it's spotless (I have one of those big walk in closets that was mostly used as my storage space). No more useless junk in my room.

at age 26

I don't buy what I don't need and sold everything I own CL in the past 3 years.

Hence forth I'm left with the following

Laptop (Thinkpad T430)
Smartphone/tablet (Note II)
Firearm (Glock 19 Gen4)

random stuff like
7 pairs of clothes
7 pairs of socks
1 pair of sneakers
1 wireless mouse
1 pair of in ear headphones
1 desk
1 chair
1 bed
1 backpack (for important stuff)
1 duffelbag (for clothes)

thats about the extent of things I currently own.

its easy and frugal as hell to live like this, I can move in under 5 minutes.

Laundry becomes a joke.

trick is not to buy anything, it's a great way not to fall into any debt.

A man once told me to be prepared to leave your home at any time with just the contents that could fit into a briefcase.

It's very... liberating to not be controlled by useless crap.

Jesus. Do you not have a kitchen or bathroom?

Not only have my parents been a couple of pack rats, but we've also moved a lot, which means a lot of stuff, which takes up time and adds stress. I try to avoid knick-knacks myself, and there's still many things I could get rid of, and things I could skip buying. I imagine when I move out, my apartment will look barely lived in.

I actually do sell everything and live very minimally.

I have yet to live alone, but I'm a little worried my apartment is going to look like an insane asylum due to its sparce nature.

I'm pretty good about keeping an uncluttered look, but I do have a closet full of original packaging (like for video game consoles, laptops, iPads, etc)

After dealing with parents and helping them with their cluttered households and endless amounts of useless crap I learned to jettison the stuff I don't need as soon as possible.

Bravo dude. Did the same thing this summer. I fit mye entire life into to a suitcase and it feels so liberating.

Get rid of the junk and make some extra cash too!

When I move out next spring I'll literally have my phone a laptop and clothes. A suitcase fits it all.

Well, I live in my house, so there's one thing.

All seriousness, I got more than my fair share of useless or broken junk that I just can't get rid of, whether for sentiment or laziness.

:lol It was from another gaffer who I think wound up getting perm'd; it was another thread about being minimalist.

He quoted an old post by someone else without actually using a quote box.

Was that the ultra-minimalist post from the dude's first account or the alt that got banned later?

Oh god, my gf: the thread. She is like a sparrow who loves to pluck random trinkets and bring them back to the nest. Thankfully she has good taste so our place is nicely decorated in that cluttered "Anthropologie" kind of way. I always tell her she's one anxiety attack away from becoming a hoarder.

So much of what I own has been attached with sentimental value. My space is very organized but also very full of things. There's almost always a story that goes with everything I own and I feel like I'm throwing away a part of myself when I throw away an item.

A lot of it probably has something to do with not getting out much and growing up alone and lonely.

There are a lot of things that I should probably get rid of. My reasoning behind keeping things was that it'll be worth money someday, but I've accumulated so much stuff (relative to the space that I live in) that at this point, I feel like just giving a lot of it away on Craig's List.

Said it for me.

"Oh hey, I haven't worn this t-shirt in years. Hell, it probably doesn't even fit anymore."
"Yeah, but remember when it did, dude? Good times."
"Good times...yeah...guess I'll keep it then."
