Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | November 2013 | Tearaway into a new world

On paper, it's a perfect fit for vita... Being able to pick up for an hour here or there and grind away for a bit.

Cross-save would probably get me double-dippin'

--------

Oh Jesus, top of the page anxiety... I CAN'T TAKE THE PRESSURE :0

The usual suspects: Killzone, Tearaway, Hotline Miami, Super Stardust Delta, Soundshapes.

Leftfield choice: The Sega Megadrve collection... Sonic on the go hits you right in the nostalgia sack :)

Is no one else worried about gearbox pulling another Aliens Colonel Marines with BL2 Vita? Seems like the same kind of setup where they're being paid to make a game they don't necessarily want to make.

Yep. It's going to be pants. I can feel it in my waters.

I don't think they'll like the userbase backlash.

...assuming that they consider Vita's userbase important :P

Really, different situation altogether here. They might assume several things: (1) Vita's userbase is not that many anyway to matter; (2) Borderlands 2 is an old game and those who want to play it in the first place already played it elsewhere; (3) only a small handful of people will buy Borderland 2 Vita anyways, most because of the combination of reasoning (1) and (2).

Which, to be fair, is not really that outrageous of an assumption :P

Won't the userbase for that backlash be too small for it to affect them?

It doesn't matter. It's the internet age after all. The thing is gonna snowball until they notice it. They'll be branded lazy devs forever. Besides if they fail, I don't think Sony is gonna like it and would have any future partnerships with Gearbox anymore.

Sales ≠ Quality of games.

Exactly. It will be reported across the enthusiast press and their fellow devs will get an eyeful. Bridges burned.

Has anyone else had a problem with unlocking the trophy for taking pictures of every level, in Tearaway? I just finished it. I took pictures of the papercraft stuff in every level, but the trophy didn't unlock. Do I have to take pictures besides story-based stuff?

Absolutely. I don't trust that company after the last few years.

I thought Iron Galaxy Studios (Divekick team) was confirmed to be the developer, not Gearbox?

Edit: ya IGS is working on it:

You spoke, we listened, and with the wonderful collaboration between 2K, PlayStation and the team at Iron Galaxy Studios – makers of indie fighting game Divekick – we can finally make Borderlands 2 on PS Vita a reality!

I expect a hit in visuals and draw-in-distance, and probably some wonky bug shit on Borderlands 2... but they're just downporting an already built game. As much as outside haters love to swoop in on open wounds, and some Vita owners like to dealbreaker on whatever things matter to them... I don't think this release is high profile enough to get some Aliens-type viral backlash.

I think you also have to take a picture in the level:
The You
which doesn't have any papercraft plans.

I just got this cool idea about how they should've done a Borderlands on Vita instead of just a port. Keep the basic mechanics the same, but instead of huge open worlds, use a hunting game type structure. Smaller missions distilled to just combat in closed off areas. Give more teamwork focused options when leveling. The combat would be largely the same. Tons of enemy variety. More gigantic bosses like the Rakk hive in BL1 would be great, too. It makes more sense to me than a numbered game. It seems like the perfect portable spin off. Hunting games work fantastically on handhelds. FPS clearly can work on Vita. It could have a smaller budget and it would really just be more fit for handhelds than classic BL. Just a thought.

Damn. I really like Persona 4's OST. Do they sell P4G OST?

I got stuck listening to Naoto's dungeon theme besides really getting stuck because I can't find that damn keycard.

I'm looking for the mega drive collection on psn but can't find it? Thought I might use my leftover $5 for it. (US)

I got a $10 credit for buying a ps4, and I'm thinking of spending it on something shiny and new for my vita. I already have Persona 4 Golden and Soul Sacrifice, so I'm thinking of putting it towards Tearaway or Killzone. Is Tearaway really as good as people paint it? Is it long?

There's a demo

If you buy an OST you'll be tired of the music by the time you buy Dancing All Night
Wow you're right. How come I didn't think of that. I'll just hold off on buying it. I doubt I'll get tired of it though.
Show off :P :P :P

Mist and Almighty, Mist and Almighty, Mist and Almighty, Mist and Almighty.
Oh yeah!
Yes got it for like $20.

Scam Asia prolly has it for $35

God only knows my copy of it is now. It just disappeared
Ouch. Did it disappear while you're listening to it?
:P

I'll probably just wait for Persona Dancing All Night just like Perorist said.

lol, retail Vita version of Putty Squad - which was supposed to launch yesterday - has slipped back into limbo status again. System 3 are the most incompetent publisher out there, I swear.

Against better judgement I went ahead and picked up Amazing Spider-Man today. Sitting at the just right distance from my monitor, and without the aid of my glasses, made the game look almost enjoyable in the few videos I glimpsed at on YouTube. It's Black Friday, and it's only $40. Why not, right?

Now on one hand I was somewhat surprised the gameplay made a fairly smooth transition to the small screen. It's a poor imitation of Arkham City, no question about it, but this web crawling adventure is one of the better playing Spider-Man games I've played in recent years. Not much creativity, but it's certainly entertaining in some parts.

On the other hand the graphics and overall presentation are so jarring and hideous, it's hard to not play the game without any sort of disappointment which segues quickly into consternation. While it looks better than the few screenshots Activision released, that's like consoling someone waist deep in shit that "At least it's not up to your neck."

No, this is not hyperbole. The game looks like someone smeared shit over the beautiful Vita screen. The game's city is full of all sorts of ugly: the people, the creatures, the robots. Everything is brown or grey, with a few shades of green here and there. Did the developer discover the secret setting to transform the OLED into a Nintendo DS screen? I wouldn't put it past them. The only one who looks even remotely decent is poor Spider-Man himself. Luckily for him, he's practically blind.

I suppose I can relate to Peter on at least some level. Some bored, callow employee at Activision decided to play a cruel, cruel joke on the friendly neighborhood spider. About the only thing clear about the game is that Spider-Man has lost his glasses, or maybe his acute vision has lost its edge, because everything past twenty feet is so goddamned blurry it's frankly offensive to the senses.

There have been some low-res games on Vita, but boy this one sure takes the golden turd award. What makes it worse is the occasional spot of dithering in dark scenes -- I thought this was left behind in the dark ages of PSP?

If you somehow can tolerate the aesthetics, or you absolutely need a quick-fix of web swinging on the go, there's some fun to be had. Not quality fun, mind you, but enough to make a half hour commute less about the uglies across from you and more about the ones on the screen.

Just be prepared to lower any expectations below what you might have after seeing a video clip of the game in motion. Then lower them some more. Because Amazing Spider-Man on the Vita looks oh-so-much-worse in person.

The game just doesn't make any sense at all. Its quite an old game at this point, and suddenly activision decides to port it over to Vita for no reason at all, and decides to put as few resources into it as possible so it turns out awful. If they are going to port an old game, do a game that people would actually care about, considering activision has so many large franchises. Like cod4 for example. That would be something that would actually sell.

The art design has nothing at all to do with the PS Vita version, that's how it was on PS3 too. It's the game. It's just got worse textures and character models now. About the only difference, well and framerate drops.

And I think you're overreacting.

I will say that I don't understand the business decision.

Especially since The Amazing Spider-Man 2 isn't coming to PS Vita. At least not at launch, guess we'll see if it does in a year.

The Walking Dead came to PS Vita, and that made sense, because they announced the second season for it.

This doesn't, but I'm glad it did. I'm having fun with it again. And I don't consider it an "awful" port either. 3DS version is awful, it's ugly, controls suck and it has no open world. Based on the demo and info I've read. Vita version isn't a perfect port that's for sure, but it's not what I consider 'awful'.

It's like an uglier port quality of Epic Mickey 2. So mix Epic Mickey 2 with Mortal Kombat/Injustice, those two are ugly and EM2 has framerate problems. Ta-da, Spider-Man.

Not sure what people expect from open world ports. They cry when a game isn't one, like Batman, then they cry when they're downgraded. You aren't going to get the exact PS3 experience. Why are people still expecting it?

I watched poor BM playing that game...

It had me on magical webs coming from the sky and landing on the street and nobody batting an eye to godddamn Spiderman right there.

All done with Tearaway for now. Last 2/3 of the game were just brilliant, only minor quibbles. Think this will end up my first platinum.

Gonna warm up some pie then warm up Soul Sacrifice :p

bought blazblue for 10€, looks amazing on the vita screen!
but damnthose combos are hard to pull off. I can't do that swinging move with the analog stick or the d-pad on a regular basis :(
