What if the only new characters were those six
I've wondered that myself. It'd still probably be a good game, since I could get by with my mains from past
Smash games (Captain Falcon, Kirby, Sonic), but it does seem like there'd be some wasted potential there.
I think a slightly more realistic outcome is that those six are the only newcomers revealed before the game launches, but not the only newcomers
period.
I'm still baffled as to why is Nintendo in VGX.
I'm still baffled at why Nintendo is attending at VGX. There's no audience there. They'll only be booed off. It's like mentioning Steam in a thread that views PC players as "PC elitists"
Nintendo
needs to expand their audience in some fashion. Yeah, the Wii U, floundering though it is, is profitable (barely), but having a larger install base for their products is always a good thing.
Plus, I dunno, not everyone watching that is gonna be the stereotypical dudebro. Sure, a good chunk of 'em will be, but not all of 'em.
And it's not like Nintendo doesn't have anything that appeals to dudebros...
Smash is still pretty popular with some of 'em, and
Metroid should be right up their alley (theoretically, anyway; in practice, that's highly debatable).
unoriginal bull shit avatars that shouldn't belong with mario and the rest. hated that they were in mario kart all people would do is play with their Mii's because "it's them" rather than play with proper characters.
You're sort of overlooking a big factor here. In
Mario Kart, aside from things like weight and handling, all the characters basically control the same way. In
Super Smash Bros., every character has a wildly different moveset from one another. Even assuming the rumors of a customizable moveset for Miis are true, they'll still play nothing like a lot of the other characters. I seriously doubt Miis will play like Kirby or Sonic, for instance.
So, while there might be incentive to play as the Mii because "oh hey, (s)he looks like me", there will be a lot of incentive to play as the others because "y'know, despite looking like me, I don't have as much fun fighting with them as I do with Captain Falcon" or similar.
AKA "I don't like them, therefore they shouldn't be in Smash" syndrome. Got it.
SmashGAF has this syndrome bad lately, I've found.
Kiefer Sutherland is actually doing the mocap for all the characters in Smash.
I can only imagine what his sessions for Kirby and Jigglypuff are like.
