Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Anyway to list who's on the server?

edit: Or a control guide of any kind? I can't find anywhere that references what key does what?

Made some wooden platforms, didn't show up in my inventory

Also, are there quick save/quick load keys or does the game just auto-save? Only save option I can see is "Save & Quit"

And how to use items in the L-R slots? I've equipped items there, but I continue to use the items in the number slots

Server stress test is still going on, we have broken the 31 player mark.

Some slight lag when everyone is on the same planet, my guess is lag kicks in if there's at least 30 people in the same general area.

Crashes on startup (access violation) for me. I see there's a few others on the board with pretty much the same error.

I'll come back after an update and see if it starts working.

Super minor personal thing, but I want to be able to move while crouched. Have the devs said anything about stealth elements to be added?
They apparently had stealth elements in, but took them out when they couldn't make it fun. Maybe it's something they'll revisit later.

I can't remember if I had you on Steam, but feel free to add me if you want. If you look at your codex ('L'?) there is an entry that tells you the basic controls and shortcuts.

I just bled to death in my own ship. It said something about a light at the bottom, then an annoying beeping noise kept going, and then eventually I just died and it said goodbye cruel world.

I played for about an hour and picking up my terraria-ways I started mining and holy shit it is so slow. Even the stone pickaxe feels way slower than early mining in terraria, but maybe my memory is fuzzy.

I know Tiy and crew have a much larger gameplan for starbound and mining isn't really the focus but it feels like I should not even be mining at this stage.

I guess I've been lucky, seemed to launch and run fine. No crashes. I think I starved to death the first time.

Windows 7 home premium, GTX 770.

In the 3 minuets i played with 2 fps it took all of 2 minutes to "demateralize" a tree. Is that what that thing is for? Because it could go at least 200x faster and still be too slow.

This game has unlimited potential and a solid foundation. Played it for around 5 hours and I think I'll put it down until it is released. I don't want to be totally burned out by the time it goes gold.

I'm happy it is harder than Terraria, I'm happy it takes longer to mine at first. I just hope more "realism" options become available or preferably a hardcore mode.

ugh, i hit a crash bug where my character didnt save, but the world state did - so all the ore I have mined is gone from the world, but not in my inventory either :(

I was so damn close to the distress beacon too, I had the silver!

Love how you regenerate

Played for almost two hours, barely progressed (still searching for iron for the tutorial mission). I've only played Terraria on IOS, but this feels and plays so much better than that game. The combat feels more refined and just more fun, animations and art is improved, the menus are better, the wealth of weapons and gear is incredible. The tutorial is much better integrated into the actual game, compared to what I played of Terraria at least. Haven't any major bugs, crashes, or glitches yet.

A lot of neat stuff can be seen in the assets folders as .PNGs, beware possible spoilers in there obviously, though it's generally meaningless names.

There are so goddamned many
instruments
!

Played an hour of Starbound and it seems really great. I never really got into Terraria, although I can see why people love it, but Starbound just seems way more compelling in terms of easing me into the game and presentation.

Lucked out in finding a huge supply of iron way deep underground. Now I'm just farming pixels, wearin' mah goggles. Time to get off this wacky eye-tree planet.

As in other similar games, the deeper you go, the more likely you are to find better ores.

I found a bunch near the surface, the thing is it dosnt seem to stick out much.. I finally spawned a world that had green soil which lead me to finding a bunch.. where as red, brown or rocks its hard to tell its even there.

Spoiler regarding the distress signal:

Don't even bother making it until you've mastered the initial three planets. I just built it after mastering the first and got completely destroyed. Wasted a ton of resources too

Doing good so far, got iron gear and a curved slicer which for some reason costs 2 iron even though it seems to be the best weapon out of the initial craftables (the other weapons are 10-20 iron each) and I found a "sloppy kill-stopper" (shield) which seems to completely block a lot of attacks.

I finished exploring my first planet, and I like how it's not like Terraria with artifical boundaries on the left/right, the world actually wraps around like a real planet.

Crafting is a little confusing trying to figure out what machines you need to make in order to make other things, but with a bit of thinking and building everything available it's not too bad. Yarn Spinner > Plant Fibres > Cloth > Bandage for anyone else who couldn't figure that out right away.

So far I can see this lasting for a long time, depending how hard it is to get the "endgame" weapons/armor/techs/etc.

Had two random crashes so far, along with the low fps when using zoom x2 that others have mentioned, but pretty smooth experience otherwise for a so called beta.

Has anyone figured out a way to sell items? I have some things worth thousands of pixels but I've only found a merchant who would sell food to me for 4 pixels each.

The problem is getting down there to begin with. The starter mining tool is painfully slow.

Making a stone pickaxe shouldn't be too hard, I believe it just requires wood and a little bit of cobblestone at a crafting table. Once you have the pickaxe/axe the initial "Matter Manipulator" thing seems useless except for breaking 1x1 squares.

For me the big problem is I haven't discovered a grappling hook/rocket boots/wings/rope equivalent to make getting out of caves easier.

Edit: Another question, though I doubt anyone will be able to answer it. Anyone figure out how to find/make the paint tool for painting blocks/armor? I can't find any info on how to get it online.

I don't even know where my initial 3 planets are anymore... I figured out early on that i could use wood for fuel and have been jumping from planet to planet for a while now lol. I also just made the distress signal... and got owned... sucks that I have to collect the resources to build a new one... but at the same time I am playing with two other players so I can just play with theirs when they get it done. level 9 planets are rough... 2 and 3 are fine to play on though :P

Neither the OS X nor the Win XP version worked yesterday - all my hopes go to this first update.
Is there already a server?

//edith: still crashing :(

Got my FPS fixed on my ATI card by setting the launcher/starbound .exe's to run as administrator in Win7. Also did that to the server .exe for good measure and because it was recommended. Port forwarded and it looks my multiplayer is working atm as well.

Definitely slower to start than Terraria. The stone axe cuts trees reasonably fast but the stone pickaxe is nothing to write home about. The matter manipulator, well..let's not get into that thing's speed.

I noticed that just like the Shift key reduces the size of blocks when you're setting them down it also goes into precision, single block, mode when mining.

Definitely die a lot from not being able to heal. I guess that'll be remedied by some heal phaser later or something.

Do you mean that fixed the FPS issues when using x2 zoom, or were you just having issues in general? If it fixes the x2 zoom that would be great.

Bandages heal very well and barely use any resources (6 plant fibre/per bandage)

Crafting table> Yarn Spinner > Plant Fibres > Cloth > Bandage FYI

How do you build rear walls?

Also, if you build rooms will people move in like in Terraria?

Background interaction is done with Right Mouse Click, for breaking or placing items.

I don't think anyone will move in, at least not right now in the beta. Kind of discourages me from building a big house, right now I've got pretty much the bare minimum to contain my chests/crafting stations/bed

Loving the game so far.

Got a question though, I always respawn at the same place on the planet and I'd like to be able to teleport directly in my "house". Is there a way to do that?

Just issues in general when I first loaded the game and got onto a planet it was fairly bad fps. On the ship it was fine but once I hit a planet it was terribad. Ran the files as admin and it all went away.

I'll try the bandages, must not have noticed that, thanks!

Sorry what files? I am in the same fps boat as you were in

So can you travel to other planets in the beta?

Yeah the entire game is built around space travel. Even in multiplayer, different players have different starting planets, so you can already hope between planets by forming a party and beaming to the other party members' ships. Once you load enough fuel into your own ship you can travel to another planet in the same system. After the first boss you'll be able to craft a starmap to travel to planets in the next system tier.

yup it's fun to explore around right now... though a way to flag more than 1 planet to go back to would be nice.... I will never find a planet i visited again because there is just so many to choose from lol

I had my first crash the first time I tried loading singleplayer after starting a character in multiplayer. Looks like no inventory was lost though. Are there any save files in particular I should manually back up?
