Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Is there any way to force vsync whatsoever? I'm guessing it's using OpenGL due to cross-platform stuff (and maybe that is part of the performance issues), but using D3DOverrider doesn't help, making the game fullscreen doesn't help, and using the nVidia control panel doesn't help. There is huge obvious tearing in the middle of the screen in all cases.

Yeah the entire game is built around space travel. Even in multiplayer, different players have different starting planets, so you can already hope between planets by forming a party and beaming to the other party members' ships. Once you load enough fuel into your own ship you can travel to another planet in the same system. After the first boss you'll be able to craft a starmap to travel to planets in the next system tier.

Actually:

If you right click when you're looking at the planets nav map, you'll zoom out to the solar system. Right click again and you'll zoom out to the galaxy. You can fly to anywhere you want as long as you have fuel. You won't be able to take on the first boss until you've visited tons of different solar systems to find upgrade plans.

This game is absolutely epic in scale.

Iron is impossible to find!

Loving this game so far. Holy shit, it's fantastic.

If you can find an area that's a combination of cobblestone, sand, and gravel, usually good chance that there's some iron there.

Iron itself looks a lot like cobblestone, that its very easy to miss. I've found that it also tends to clump up in the middle of a patch of cobblestone.

Okay, so far, server seems to run great. I think we managed to get a minimum of 30 people on the server.

I'm headed to bed, but I'll leave the server running. You guys have fun.

That's not necessarily true,
we managed with iron bows through the Terraria method of single-block firing slits. Hope future bosses can ignore terrain.

Anyone figured out farming? Whenever I try to harvest using the manipulator, I just get my seed back. This is after two stages of growth, when there are visible bananas on the plant.

Yeah we totally SPACE INVADER'D it. We should really have worked on getting me some upgrades first though. The first time we fought it, I was sitting on over 700 pixels. ALL GONE. T_T

Don't use any item on it. Highlight the crop when it is grown, and press E. That will get you the fruit/harvest/whatever and a seed back as well.

Yup, and middle clicking also works to harvest things. Some planets you may find things like eyeballs on the ground you can harvest this way.

Hopefully answering my own question, it looks like the save files are in the Steam Starbound game directory under the "universe" and "player" directories, so I backed those up. I had a freeze during saving and quitting once and had to force-kill, but I still don't seem to have lost any inventory.

I need to figure out how to sell items. I looted a bunch of homes (and felt a little bad about it) and I have expensive stuff, and shopkeepers say "Buy and Sell" or whatever, but I only see options to buy.

Making a stone pickaxe shouldn't be too hard, I believe it just requires wood and a little bit of cobblestone at a crafting table. Once you have the pickaxe/axe the initial "Matter Manipulator" thing seems useless except for breaking 1x1 squares.

Hold shift to break/place 1x1 squares

regarding saves and backing up. that makes sense. backing up saves in terraria you had to copy world and character folders or whatever you wanted inside said folders.

question is, which of these will carry over when the game is constantly updating and patched. It would be cool if we could get around the character wipes by just backing that file up. time will tell!

Sigh, I realized that I'm one of the few lucky people with the two wrong operating systems. I read somewhere in the Steam forums that the OS X version isn't working at all at the moment. Furthermore, it seems that this also accounts for the Win XP version -> here is one thread in the Starbound forum with a "work around" - spoiler: it's not a work around - install Win7/8 or Ubuntu instead

Have fun and enjoy - I have to wait for some future updates

So it's not just me. Haven't gotten past the title screen on this OSX version.
I'll try it on the PC tomorrow.

Oh, I expect file formats etc. to change and break things like when Minecraft gets patched. I just do it for now in case I suddenly lose all my inventory when there AREN'T patches or something. :P

Just read a post on the Steam forums that said to resize the window if you're stuck on the title screen. It worked for me.. you should try it out.

Not my image but you can grow plants on your spaceship XD

Was only able to play for a bit more than an hour, and I'm loving it so far.

I got kind of lucky, there is iron everywhere on the planet I landed, but copper is scarce ...

I love how building is smooth and intuitive, there a few things they might need to improve, but so far it's already very good.

Will give it a good go when i'm back to work tonight ... gonna be a very long day :(

Gah! Had no idea that was the way! I thought the beacon was to call a ship with fuel...

Meanwhile I randomly explored everywhere and ended up getting and using the beacon with basically my starting gear as I found most of the materials to make the beacon in random chests ><; (aka I went to like 25 planets in the 4 hours i played lol)

I can't seem to figure how to eat the default berries (The fish race) you start off with. I have a separate seed that I can use to grow crops...but how do I eat the berries specifically?

Clicking, right-clicking doesn't seem to do anything.

Man i've run into some crazy shit already just skimming the surface of the planet:

A random space lab filled with deadly robots. The best part is mining the materials in the lab. Now I hight-tech lights in my wooden cabin. lol

These two thiefs randomly camping out..i feel bad because I killed them and stole their camping tent. Now i'm using it to heal myself underground.

Welp this game is going to take my life.

If you join a server, where are you meant to spawn?

Your SP location or another default spawn?
you spawn on your own ship... you then have to either invite the other player by character name or have them invite you... and then you can teleport to their ship by clicking the bottom left of their picture and join them that way.

It seems that in other servers everyone spawns in the same place.

When I make a server and log in with different characters, they all spawn in different locations. Any reason why?

not sure, only server experience i have is hosting my own and having my friends join me, each of them starting in their own ship in their own unique areas.

It's a huge plus the server is separate from the game though, as it meant that while I crashed my world stayed up :P

Does this game need multiplayer or is it fine as single?

I don't think it requires MP, nor do I think Terraria does either though.
In general my play session of starbound was me and my two others playing together, but each were basically off on our own the whole time. My wife stayed on her own planet all alone. My college buddy and I both took the same planet but he went left and I went right so we rarely were together lol.

that being said though, sharing resources in a game like this is a nice plus. As is the ability to explore a unique/dangerous area together.

as far as i have read there is no way to do so at this time, though I imagine there will be at some point.

This should be a priority in terms of features, of course gamebreaking bugs first. Although you spawn on the ship always which might complicate things a bit, however there should be an item that allows you to set a spawnpoint. They already have the code to know whether you are on the surface outside of a room - so you can be beamed up. So it shouldn't be too hard to allow people to set a waypoint on the surface. One of the issues is that at least for me, I was dieing quite regularly! Now, maybe I should have adjusted and stayed closer to home / slept more. I was just roaming and exploring trying to find all the little nuances without sticking to one area too much, but I was dieing every few minutes at some points - especially at night where enemies go up to level 4 from 2 and do a decent amount more damage. It's good though, some of the enemies have decent attacks that make you think.

Wish I could set up a server and play with friends, hopefully one of them gets it set up tonight or I get mine fixed - it just shuts the server down for me.

I really wasn't to bothered by the lack of a spawn point... though that very well might be because my night was spent following the following actions.

A. Get to a new planet, I go right for as long as I can, buddy goes left.
B. Upon death, Search for a new planet to explore unless there was something super exciting near where I died.
C. Repeat until awesome.

Steam OS X works fine for me

As far as I know you can't. The price on the items doesn't seem related to a sell value at all, but instead a buy value if you decide to copy it with your printer (only items with value can be copied)

So, how do you make pixels, really? Just from killing monsters/finding loot?
