Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

I just beat it myself. Apparently it
drops a molten core allowing you to craft a metal works that will allow you to craft a starmap you can install use on your ship to go to the beta sector. I haven't even begun to explore the alpha sector though!


So, is it true that dying (armor different colors) hasn't been implemented yet? I have all these petals and glass, but I guess the dye won't do me any good right now.

well it's really the terraria ART guy (@tiyuri) did this


from what i understand he wanted to make the next terraria, but the developer guy (@Demilogic) wanted to be done with it. So tiyuri left to make Starbound

Recently Demilogic got another person tod o art and has been doing updates and talking about Terraria 2 though so I have no idea what's going on there

The first few hours of the game are a pretty much mirror image of what you see in Terraria already. I haven't really gotten to the point where I feel like I'm playing Starbound because even with the additional systems in the game : managing hunger, farming, etc. I don't feel like I've gotten to the point where I feel like I'm playing a significantly different game than what I played 2-3 years ago in Terraria.

Music is phenomenal though.

Yes! I got super lucky cause I found them around an Avian village. In the chests, bookshelves etc..I just kept finding that and molotov cocktails.

Aww snow gear is getting nerfed! Oh well...it definitely was way too powerful. Level 6-7 monsters only doing like 2-3 damage to me.

Really? While Terraria wasn't anything spectacular, the style of this game is one thing that attracted me to it. Especially the designs of the races (in pixel form) intrigued me.

I like the races and monster designs, but not anything else in particular. I wish objects had more definition to them. Maybe I'd like it more if some things were black bordered? A black border usually makes pixel art more clean.

Ditto. The characters look so much better than Terraria's and that's why I jumped at this game.
 
...updated from OSX 10.6.8 to 10.9 - and it works!

Stepped directly into the GAF server without any experience. And it seems that they have a serious bed-disappearing problem.

Keeping your character? I'd assume just flying to an unexplored planet/solar system should do the trick since those planets haven't actually had a save file created for them, so they should generate new things.

Otherwise you could create a new character.

This would be my guess too. Planets that have had visitors before are stored. Planets that are brand new (never had visitors before/no associated save file) will be generated with the balance changes.
 
Is the server dead? I was flying to anther planet, never got there after like 5 minutes, my meat I tried to cook vanished, and then I tried logging off and back on again.
 
Any multiplayer experience reports? Or a more detailed description of how it works?
Can you travel as a co-op party on 1 spaceship? How would you tell a buddy where you are so he can join otherwise? How is the server set up? Can you set up your own easily while still being able to play on it?
 
Okay, server is now down, Haryu did it remotely and will look into it when he gets home.

From my end, it teleported me to a different home planet than the usual one with all the GAF stuff on it. What else did people see?

I died and got beamed up to my ship. I tried to go back but the beam down icon wasn't visible.

I think it *was* the home planet, same ambient color and dirt and decorations and whatnot, just in its freshly generated state.

I hope nothing was lost.
 
83k people playing wauw just wauw i am blown away even with almost 100k backers on there website and now people buying it on steam this is the second most populair game and it beat CS:GO hell it even beat a game like well i have to say it Call of Duty from a huge ass studio.
 
My brother is awesome...

He knew I'm dying to play this but I was holding off b/c I just can't justify spending money on any more games. I check my E-mail this morning, and suddenly I find a little Steam gift :D

For the time being, leather armor > even silver armor, and assuming you can mine a decent amount of iron, you can craft better damaging weapons than what you can find in chests, although there's no elemental effect like fire or lightning attached.
 
How are people finding cool things? 14 hours played and I'm rocking a garbage weapon and the leather armor. I haven't even seen anything else.
 
So I spent a bunch of time crafting a distress beacon, used it, died ... now what? Do I have to spend more time gathering all the resources again to make a new one?

I got beamed back to the ship. Once I tried to teleport back down to the planet I became invisible.

I need some help on what my next step is supposed to be.

How do I level up? I explored my starting planet and the other lvl1 planet next to it, crafted copper armor and just upgraded to snow armor which suddenly appeared at the spinning wheel and has amazing stats.

But where do I find better weapons? How do I craft them? I just went to a lvl7 planet and I'm getting wrecked. I need some pointers as to what I'm supposed to be doing.
 
Is it normal it took forever to get past the initial loading screen? Game runs flawlessly but the first loading probably took minutes.
 
Has anyone actually found any guns? I figured it's maybe a rare chance to get a gun drop from killing things using guns, but no guns in any chests or drops yet.

I have to wait a bit, but certainly not minutes.
