Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Has anyone found a snow biome with northern lights?

I'm building my home on a snow planet but I just saw some screens from a snow planet with northern light, looked amazing.

Might want to edit the world info into the OP too. A lot of people asking for the "GAF planet." Unless the world most of us started on isn't the GAF world.

I built the beacon and beat the UFO, but the quest never completed for me. Is that normal?

Rarest thing I've found thus far is a horse mask with 0 defence. I'm actually slightly clueless about where I should try to go next or what's the best way to improve my character.

For anyone wondering how to give items to your other characters, it's simple. Put the items you want to transfer into a container on a planet, then go to that planet with your other character. The universe is saved separate from your characters.

Wait, wait, wait. Are you saying that starting a new character doesn't mean starting new worlds? If I build a house on a planet with one, and go to that planet with another, that house will still be there?

There are no more quests after that. You need to craft a thing from something you hopefully picked up from the boss.

Exactly. Your universe is constant amongst all your characters.

My little addition to the gaf planet. :) It's to the west of the starting house.

It isn't actually called silver armor. I think it's different for every race, but it requires the copper set + silver bars.

There are two sets you can build that require the copper set. Your race set, and the Silver Armor. Race set is 5 armor, Silver is 10.

So I'm very interested in this, but if I didn't really enjoy Terraria, will I enjoy this?

I didn't like the combat of Terraria and I played it single-player (I'm sure it would have been a lot better in mp).

Combat feels identical to Terraria for me, again I played terraria a long time ago, also I am reasonably early in this game (6 hoursish)

Combat is much better. MP thing for me for both, I am different, isn't a fun increaser per say. Its great.

Amazing. I'm not sure why I'd need two characters, but I want multiples all the same.

Can you use the same character in SP and MP, by the way?
Yes, you can. Anything you do with your character in either SP or MP will save all the same. This includes things you put in your ship. Only the universe itself is exclusive to you or the server, for now. Eventually, server side characters saves may be an option.

The first boss isn't too hard. The problem is getting strong enough to beat him is tedious. Dungeons and green drops don't show up until you unlock beta. They should show up in level 5+ worlds.

I had dungeons and green drops on my very first starter world.

big update over the weekend, including character wipes:

http://playstarbound.com/coming-in-a-few-days-sorry-for-the-delay/

Hmmmm. I have a feeling this will not be the last of this. Which is fine, but yeah currently its pretty weird how the current system works. 100->10 seems a bit drastic though, you'd think they go with a number that provides a bit more breathing room, same for the enemy difficulty. I would think a 5 point system over a 3 point would be better. Say Very Weak, Weak, Average, Strong, Very Strong.

STORE YOUR GOOD SHIT ON YOUR SP PLANET

Will that work? I would assume everything would get wiped. I forgot my SP though, could just write down another planets coordinates though and store it there.

It'll work unless the universe is also wiped.

It's gotta be it all, they're totally changing both weapons and monsters, and from the sound of it resource/item spawns down into planets. So I can't imagine we can just store those very same weapons and stuff planet side and still have them after the update, especially if the planets themselves will be getting updates.

Thanks, I'll probably get it when its on sale then.

I'm very impressed by the amount of content Terraria has but I just can't get into its mechanics like digging and placing objects, it just feels clunky.

Wipes are really freaking lame. Beta, I know, but a wipe?
Well, it's not like they want to delete everyone's characters just for fun. It just has to do with the way the game works. Things would be really wonky or just not work at all if they put out certain updates for existing characters.

Starbound is much better about digging and placing objects, thanks to being able to affect more than one "block" of area at a time. There's a lot of digging to be done in this game, but there are other things to do too, like just exploring the surface of planets for decorations to scan into your 3d printer and looking for chests, or looking for merchants to buy things from, or stealing everything from abandoned structures (or removing the occupants of not-so-abandoned structures first).

The changes sound good. The progression right now is definitely a bit confusing, and the weapons/armor UI is fucking awful in terms of informing you about pretty much anything. Even taking into account levels and whatnot, the only way I can tell practically how good something I have equipped is, is to go down on the planet, get hit, and hope I don't die. Lol.

Also, another thing I found a bit disappointing so far in exploration is how you can run into cool stuff which really doesn't offer anything practical at all. Finding an advanced lab deep underground is a really cool experience, but when there's nothing there other than looting the furnishings, it's rather sad. I guess that's a beta thing though. I'm sure they'll populate more content and possibly quest stuff when they're ready to.

seeing as it says character reset, i'm sure putting things on planet will be fine

I'm pretty sure it's going to be a full wipe. Otherwise it makes no sense. There is no actual "character" progression in the game, since it's all item based. They're resetting it because they're making major changes to the way items work, so why would it reset the character and not the entire universe?

too logical....

i have guns and i feel op, i just don't wanna lose them...probably for the best though.

I think after the wipe I'll be an Apex, they look super badass like Planet of the Apes but in space. Though I feel bad, I found an Apex lab a little while ago and they were all like "Don't go in there, or else" and I was "Die you dirty apes" and I slaughtered like 25 of them, scientists, guards, anything living. Then I stripped the place bare. God some sweet lockers and chairs and a ton of posters.

Wipe is sad but expected. I really want to play, but feel its a bit pointless until the next update. I hope they say the actual day not "just a few days."

Interesting choice of how to handle it. Something definitely needed to be done about damage scaling, if not for lack of intuitiveness then because of how much adjustment level x9 monsters got against level x5 armor.

How do the L and R fields work?
L and R are what you use for left and right click if you have nothing else equipped on your hot bar. X switches between hotbar and "unequipped, which would be L and R. Z switches what's in your L and R slots.

What I like to do is put a shield or flashlight in the R slot, and a two-handed weapon in the L slot. That way, when I hit X, I go to my two-handed weapon. But then when I equip anything on the hotbar that is one-handed, I'm able to use the shield or flashlight with that item.

Kind of lost any desire to play now that I know a wipe is coming. Ohh well, I guess I'll beat Broken Sword 5.

So far I think my biggest gripe about the game is that digging isn't fun. I'm not sure what to pinpoint exactly, but when you get to the lower depths, even with a diamond pickaxe, it takes a long time to go through some of the stones. Sand and dirt is fun because you can just do one poke and explore what you want. I wish there were some holdover potions from Terraria, like being able to see ore around you, etc. After going through a lot of planets, there doesn't seem to be enough cool secret dungeons underground or things to see like in Terraria. Digging is pretty much finding ores and that's it.

That's what bugs me the most about the character wipe: I don't really want to go through all that digging again to progress.
