Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

noooooo char wipes.

I've only been playing SP.. am i safe?
You are not safe. If it only affects characters and not planets (which I think is unlikely, but possible), then you can store all your things on a planet, remember the coordinates, and go back and get your stuff with a new character. Just don't count on that working.

the gaf home disappeared

Either it got restored, or people are on the wrong planet. I just logged in. Looks fine.

Edit: Well, at least what's on the starter planet is fine. If there's stuff elsewhere that got destroyed or is just gone, I don't know about that.

I think there are two different GAF inns , one of them got destroyed somehow (bug?)

Im on the planet with the destroyed one, i had no idea there were more than one planets that GAF resides :D

So specific planets have the same coordinates in all universes? So let's say I have Mushroom Planet I and coordinates 1234, 5678 in my universe, someone else will their version of Mushroom Planet I at the same coordinates? Or are all universes completely random?

This game is awesome so far but doesn't feel very spacey to me. Hitting stuff with a pickaxe seems so lowtech.

I seriously cant believe that they had so messed up progression system in place.

I dont really like new simplified system. There was nothing wrong with having armor penetration stats and tons of levels on weapons and planets, problem was with progression and values.
Like, have they even played this game from the beginning, because maybe only 1-4 planet lvl progression was decently done, after that it was one-shot mayhem.
Bosses were also not tested, like at all, because there is no way to fight them without having next tiers equipment or using glitches.
Shields didnt get stats at all and we useless except for alpha sector and some parts of beta sector

Enemies also shouldnt stand in You and attack, but attack from certain range, so You could block and hit back.

The less You say about interface the better.

And why cant You use techs together? Or even change them on the fly with shortcut?

There should be no wipe after just 3 days of beta.

But I never moved my spaceship. And yesterday everybody got teleported back to their ship. Today I tried to connect to the server again, beamed down - and the spawn was empty (just some torches).

They already explained all of that would happen beforehand. On their forum their sticky explained that the first phase of the beta would be really rough with character wipes, glitches, broken mechanics and so on. Not sure what you were expecting.

It's the new craze to pay to beta test a game.

I mean I agree the game is fairly broken right now but it's still a beta.

I have no problem with glitches, broken mechanics or OP weapons, but i have problem with game that was no tested at all. As You can see i havent even mentioned that game cant properly close 80% of the time and it goes into endless loop of focus and defocus for 5 minutes even after killing the .exe or that i have constant drops to 30fps.
Beta is beta, but this is not because of beta, its flawed design that hasnt been tested. I dont expect balance, but i expect to be at least somehow playable, it was not, not without using glitches to progress.

Most of those changes You can notice from one playthrough. I've noticed it, my friend noticed it, how could they not noticed it?

And how can You even make boss that kills himself?

Because they clearly didn't expect every situation yet? It's a sandbox game so of course people are going to find workaround to beat bosses. Yeah, I have to kill the .exe too to close it since Steam is telling me I'm still in the game even after I quit the launcher and the game but once again I fully knew the state the game would be in. If it was the final release I could agree it would be unacceptable but this is clearly labelled as a an early beta phase. I don't think it's much worse than what you can find on Steam Early Access.

I don't have a problem with any of this. They intend to fix it. That's what matters to me. Discussing problems in a beta is perfectly fine, but bringing them up with the apparent assumption that there shouldn't be problems in the first place will just get you the "beta is beta" talk.
Just realized someone stole a door lol
And two beds! The bastards.

Alongside Prison Architect, Starbound feels like the most complete beta I've played

Compared to others which are either very bare bones or simply feel like tech demos, Starbound already feels like a complete game IMO, which I think is a testimony to the devs.

Oddly enough, I haven't experienced any of the more obtrusive bugs or glitches yet. As for paid betas, I don't really see a problem with that. You got access to a game before others and better yet you get to help the game grow and expand through your suggestions and feedback. (I believe the hunting knife and temperature meter changes were fan suggestions)

Isn't that what we're here, in beta testing, for? To test? Now they're fixing stuff.

Exploring in this game so far (it is a beta after all), feels like an absolute waste of time. Unless you are into building a lot of stuff...

It might sound weird but my biggest issue with this game is, if it's about traveling in space and exploring the galaxy then why am I building anvils and forging swords and bows? I was kinda hoping this would be a more sci-fi terraria but it's kinda just terraria...with a spaceship.

I really hope that the new system works better, because, indeed, the old one degenerated quickly into "instakill or peashooter".

Can't wait for the inevitable Star Trek or Star Wars mods...

Can't wait for the inevitable FTL mod. If you think Florans are murderous, wait until you meet the Mantises.

Eh. There is difference between not viable mechanics and botched progression (its impossible currently to progress to every new tier without glitches) and testing balance or features.

I've been in tons of betas and i havent played one that had progression completely broken. [except for Diablo 3 ;P]
As i said, everything they are changing in a patch in few days, could be solved by having one, decent person to playthrough game from the beginning to higher tiers.
Its the first feedback You can get, if game is progression is playable or not.

There is tons of other stuff that, as we are in beta, we can test. This is not one that we should. We should test speed of progression, if thats not too slow or too fast, or why players skip that content and not others etc, but not test if You can even playthrough it.

There is a reason why people complained about it just after few hours of Starbound beta, because its freaking obvious.

I hope that they do add in more future gear, it's what I expected too.

My friend had the same gripes. He did expect more tech stuff.

You can't even build guns. Techs are extremely rare. Besides the spaceship, there's no tech stuff.

What I do like is jumping to other worlds and just combing the surface for civilization. Just recently, I invaded an Apex laboratory (too bad there wasn't any guns or techs or schematics to take).

Perfect. Absolutely perfect.

I've been getting that too. I only actually found a gun thanks to being told where to buy some from an NPC. And they were much weaker than my melee weapons. It hasn't bothered me, but I can see how it might with people expecting more of a sci-fi game.

I don't think you have ever seen a bug tracker. Even for a project of this size there may be hundreds of open issues at any given time, some of which will be prioritized, while the rest will be dealt with later. The intention was to get something playable out, which it definitely is, and address non-critical issues later.

I stashed my entire inventory in my home base, wrote down the coordinates of the planet and quit the game.

I am ready for the rapture.

I dont think You have progressed through the Alpha sector in Starbound if You think that what i said is non-critical issue.

Spoiler the bosses pls. I still haven't beaten the UFO.

Im just worried about getting burnt out on the game before the official game hits.

I don't think the bosses are that difficult--so far. The UFO boss, for example, is a lvl10 (well, a 9 with the latest patch), in the Alpha sector you typically see planets from lvl 1-10. You don't go to Beta, which has 11-20, until after you beat the UFO. So you progress through the planet levels until you have good enough gear to waltz through a lvl 10 planet, then you fight the boss to progress. By that time, the UFO boss should be easy enough. The quest progression makes it seem like the UFO boss is the next step after making an anvil, but really you want to spend time going through different planets getting better gear before facing it.

Also, I really wish they had called this an alpha instead of beta. That's really what it is, it's not even close to being "feature-complete", it would probably help a bit with all the people complaining about a wipe less than a week after "release". You expect frequent wipes in an alpha, you expect more subtle updates from a beta.

Very small team that works from remote stations around the world who was under a ton of pressure to get to a shipable testing phase.

They warned everyone going in not to play the early stages of the beta if they were didn't like these sort of things.

stage1
Progenitor

Stage 1 will be move at a breakneck speed. This will be the buggiest and busiest stage of the beta. A bunch of unfinished features will be disabled whilst we finish them up. Updates will come thick and fast, sometimes as often as multiple updates a day.

If you choose to take part during stage 1 you should expect bugs, lots of balance changes, you shouldn’t get too attached to your character or universe as we may make changes that require you to start from scratch. You should expect the game to be broken at points as we make sweeping changes but you’ll get to enjoy exciting new content added constantly. The engine won’t optimized during this stage of the beta so performance could be poor on some low end machines.

You’ll get to see a bunch of ‘behind the scenes’ content at this stage and provide feedback during this crucial period.

DO take part in this stage if:

- You enjoy testing buggy and unfinished code

- You enjoy providing feedback

- You want to leave your mark on the game

- You just can’t wait any longer

DO NOT take part in this stage if:

- Bugs infuriate you

- You don’t like spoilers

- You can’t stand losing your save

- You want the full Starbound ‘experience’ the first time you play.

You should have waited to get the game if you weren't willing to test the game for them.

Where do you fnd iron ore? I been digging but I can only find a whole lot of other elements :S

Edit: jeez as soon as I post it, I find some :D

Now, how do you make the distress beacon? It doesn't show up in the bench.

got my revenge on that UFO motherfucker.... it really is not that bad. I built myself a little bunker, plenty of bandages and silver armor. It also helped that I found some throwing knives.

Now how do you install the engine piece that lets you go to beta sector?

So what's the verdict so far on this game? people seem to enjoy it.

Spoiler the bosses pls. I still haven't beaten the UFO.

Im just worried about getting burnt out on the game before the official game hits.

I've logged 28 hours into it already, yet I've only just hit the second world on my SP game. On my MP server me and a few friends also just defeated the UFO..
I don't see myself burning out soon but will probably before the game actually releases.

Server down?

Heres what happened. I did some farming and idled for ~2 hours. I decided to go underground and see what GAF planet looks like. After 3 mins of following torches underground, I got beamed up to my ship without my request. I beamed back down - everything was fine.

I went back underground and got further but died. Afterwards, I tried to beam back down and it would just beam me back to my ship. I logged out and closed client. Opened it again to connect: Connect Failed.
