No Man's Sky announced - Hello Games (VGX)

The aesthetic is really peculiar. It looks like what you would get if you took Outcast's graphics and tried to replicate them today.

Jeff Gerstmann's reaction:
Went from zero to "holy fucking shit" on No Man's Sky after seeing that trailer yesterday. I have high hopes.

Brad Shoemaker's reaction:
Jeff and I talked to these guys for an hour yesterday, can't wait to talk about it on the podcast. It's so ambitious the mind reels at it.

Holy hell that trailer looks freaking awesome. This is among my most anticipated games, I really hope there's a PC version down the line. Sorry if the Jeff and Brad quotes are super-late. :)

Looks fantastic. I have some mild concerns about gameplay, but frankly, if all I do is hop from system to system exploring unique planets and outer space I'm in. Anything else is icing.

I'm ecstatic to hear Sean referencing classic sci-fi authors and covers although it's not clear how far this extends beyond aesthetic. There is so much more to sci-fi than space war and aliens though. Any devs fancy trying their hand at a Culture game? Pretty please? I will have your babies.

This looks incredible. Although Hello being such a small team has me a little worried that we won't see it released for quite some time.

Feels like it might become a State of Decay type project with milestone videos released every so often, but it not getting a full release for at least 2-3 more years.

I used to be very against precedural generation... I believed in a designed game. Random dungeons are boring bullshit.

But Minecraft showed me the value of it.. And when I saw this trailer I saw even more potential. Truly random worlds can be amazing.

This looks like a dream come true, pretty incredible. I'll keep my hype low but damn me if it doesn't feel good to be a space sim fan with all of these promising new games.

well, yeah, in some degree. Bad animations instantly kill some part of believability in the virtual world.

I disagree. The player is in a first person perspective in an alien universe, there being 'bad animations' is irrelevant as that could be something to do with the planet's gravity or the design traits of the ships/aliens we catch glimpses.

it's not like State of Decay where the sometimes bad animations tend to stick out as it's in a more grounded setting. Basically, calling out bad animations in this type of game is somewhat redundant...but that's just my opinion.

The problem is: Bungie is always telling about how the player can explore the solar system, how open the world is. But at the end they haven't shown nothing about this. No Man's Sky came out of nowhere and showed the stuff, Bungie is always talking about since the unveiling of Destiny. That's why I'm comparing those two.
Yeah, but you're comparing a game that actually lets you explore a star system to a hyperbolic PR statement describing a map selection menu.

Meh didn't do much for me. The more he talked about how big it was the more I kept thinking how boring it would be.

Crazy, I felt the opposite.

I don't even care much for Minecraft, but if he can pull off even 80% of the stuff he mentioned. I'll be happy.

Well, this looks nifty. Wonder if it can live up to the promise of what the trailer showed. I hope it doesn't end up being a Minecraft with a gun and spaceship and there are actually things to accomplish.

The ship/structure in the sky after you first take off, I feel that's going to be a big part of any story they have planned.

Got some serious Oblivion (movie) vibes when it first came into view...

I really want this game to be amazing, but a 4-man team, procedurally generated content and just the scope of the thing make me incredibly cautious for this. A game like Precursors was ambitious like no game I've played and while it was a lot of fun, it was also one of the most unfinished and buggy games I've ever played.

No Man's Sky and Star Citizen.

Both have great names, great art styles, and they will hopefully both be fantastic space-flight video games in their own ways.

Very much looking forward to the future of this title. Two space-flight games to watch. Sci-fi erection achieved? Indeed. Hot damn. I hope it'll be good for user-content. I can see beautiful things.

Well, at least something good came out of the VGX then.

I hope their ambition doesn't get the better of them and sends this into development hell because they continually want to add to their list of plans.

Adding to the Starbound comparisons, if this is on PC as one of the platforms, maybe it's an idea for them to utilise the Early Access system when it's in a playable state. If they did it will get the devs a massive kick of money and show what is likely to be huge interest, and means they can continue development with a budget that will allow them to keep their ambitions too.

Either way and whatever they decide, I think their "Hello" to the world was a great one.

You guys should check out space engine. It features a procedural generated universe and you can "land" on every star and planet.

So this game is possible to pull off for a small team and i guess space engine was a inspiration for them.

Blown away. Finger's crossed they pull it off. I was so excited when Frontier was supposed to deliver this and while interesting in some ways it just failed miserably for me.

Amazing leap from Joe Danger to this.

The game description and video was just titillating. But what pleased me the most was the guy palpable own enthusiasm talking about the game. Some moments I felt he was almost trying to restrain himself hehehe This game... Man, this game!

This looks awesome. Plus, he name dropped Moebius (and other greats).

The industry needs more non-military themed science fiction.

I hope Sony picks this up like they have with other indies and throws a bunch of money its way. Incredible for a 4-man team but with something as ambitious they could certainly use some magic help.

Speaking of which, any word on what platforms?

These guys were bitterly dissappointed with Frontier a long time ago and said 'We can remake Elite properly.'

Will be interesting to see how this goes up against Braben's new baby.

I'm skeptical. I think they are massively overselling this game. The scope seems too ambitious for just 4 devs.

maybe the game will allow for player created content and sharing?

Most anticipated game so far for me, I want it in Q2 2014!

Could well be Elite on Steroids. I'm interested to see how combat works, if there's trading, upgrades and rewards for exploration. Not to mention how players interact in the universe.
