Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Does anyone else find themselves never hungry? I feel like there's no point in food.

No, my dude definitely got hungry. I just found that I had way more food than I ever needed since rice was so easy to grow. I stocked up a bunch of banana bread, grilled meat, ect, but didn't need any of it because I just carried around a stack of rice.

so I guess I just ask in this thread and someone will pm me details for server?

Having fun with this game.. but definitely something I need to be playing with others :)

You must still be in Alpha sector if you only see planets up to lv 10. Do some of the quests and find your way to Beta and onwards.

I beat the Penguin UFO already and got the engine upgrade Mk2 thing, but the game never told me how to use it. I've tried putting it in the 3d printer, into the fuel thing, into the tech thing, everything. My quest log is now empty, so I'm effectively stuck.

Also the Penguin UFO was really stupid. I had to cheese it with a fort with a tiny opening and 500 iron bow shots to beat it. Terraria's bosses were hard, but never required stupid gimmicks to beat.

Quote the first post of this thread and it will have the server IP/password in the quoted post for you to see. It's down right now I believe for maintenance, but will probably be back up shortly.

"Use" the item from your hotbar.

No, you read the OP.

Server is currently down for maintenance though. It'll be back up in about 45 minutes.

Hey Emitan, how's the OSX version so far? I've been playing on Bootcamp since the beginning, because I expected the worst of the OSX beta.

I'm not Emi, but I've been playing on a 2011 Macbook Pro and it's been running like butter. I'm on OSX 10.8.5 right because I had to restore an old backup, though; maybe I should see how well it works under Mavericks.

I dunno, Tiy mentions in the thread that the fee has to be higher than dying because you can die more than once. You're basically giving up 40% of your pixels to guarantee the remaining 60% are safe forever, whereas not banking them means eventually you'll run into an enemy, miss a jump or do something else to get killed and lose a lot more than 40% (in fact, two deaths is already 41%).

I've just been keeping ore in storage and turning it into pixels as needed, anyway. That way I never have too much on me at once to lose. As far as I can see that'll still be my primary banking method.

My glitch is hungry all the time.

Son of a @$%^

I feel you though, there's really not much explanation at all so far (I know, I know, it's not even close to being finished yet). Still, I don't think it'd be too difficult to add a few more lines of text here and there to explain things a little better.

My glitch is hungry all the time.

That's funny, my glitch seems to constantly be hungry too. I go out bow hunting all the time to replenish my meat supplies. Maybe it's a glitch? :)

I have a Glitch too, and he's never hungry.

So is a wipe happening with tomorrows patch for sure? I'd like to play some more tonight but not if everything is getting wiped.

Yeah I haven't played since they announced the patch would be a wipe. Figure I'll just start over completely. Not too fussed about it, but I don't want to play however many hours and have it be for naught. Not worth the effort saving stuff since I didn't have that much.

Besides, I want to test how the new balance is.

Btw i'm pretty sure that wipe will wipe everything, not just characters, because they're changing all the weapons/armor and whole progression.

Didn't like Terraria because it just threw you in and said "good luck".

Took a chance and gave this a shot. Starts out great, giving you missions to help you learn the game, easy enough to complete in a minute or so...then maybe 30 minutes in you get to "build a distress beacon" and it turns to grinding to find supplies to build it.

After about an hour, I just stopped. The fun wasn't there anymore, it had turned into another grind fest.

This post touches on two things that really piss me off in gaming these days:.

1. Tutorials - Either they are long and drawn out in games that don't need them (Adventure Time - Explore the dungeon) or they don't exist at all (Minecraft, Terraria).

2. Grinding - Seems like the "future" of gaming is making games where you grind to get better equipment so you can grind better to get better equipment and or holding your time hostage with microtransactions.

Sounds like this game type is just not for you dude. The game is what you make of it.

While I agree in a sense, I think in the retail version they will have better tool tips and "hints" such as use E to cook food on a campfire (took me 30min to find this out)

I did a short hair mod tutorial! It's not very detailed and I didn't want to get into design and pixel art theory, but it gives you a basic idea about how to make your own hair for the game. If you're not too used to pixel art, you can start by modifying existing hair into a style you want!

edit: Click through for large.

I have tons of meat, and farming is pretty easy. So I can't really give you input.

Has it been confirmed that the wipe is only wiping the characters and not the universes?

I'm actually using it myself. That's why I made it so you can click through to the main image.

That would help if my browser background wasn't the exact same dark theme as GAF's, haha. But no matter, I can just open it in some external program - nice work.

Can't seem to travel using coordinates at all, only through hitting the random destination button can I actually go anywhere. I must be doing something wrong.

I beat it fair and square with the Iron Bow / Double Jump + Sword and several bandages. It definitely took a while, but it was fun. Also, did you beat it before the patch to make it crash through blocks? Because it smashes even the hardest materials in my game.

I have a Glitch too, and he's never hungry.

Perhaps it's... glitched? (badum-tish).

Awesome! One thing though, you left the background color as transparent, so those of us with dark-GAF color schemes can barely read the text.

By the way, what happens if you have a character with a modded hairstyle and play multiplayer? What do other players see? A default hairstyle?

Iron bow is ridiculously awesome. I one shot the mobs on my home planet.

Word. I have a stack of over 50 raw meat from mobs, especially flying ones.

When you enter the coordinates, zoom all the way out to the star level. The destination you seek should have the solar system in the center of the map. Click on this, then you need the individual planet name (I/II/III/a/b/c) to figure out which one to travel to.

Addressed that above, but that's why I made it so you can click through (http://i.minus.com/i6JicCBeln2Wk.png for those who absolutely must have a white background!)

And I think it makes it so you have no hair at all (completely bald). If the server has the mods installed it isn't a problem though, and everyone sees it. The devs said they want to make it so that your mods are viewable by everyone in the future, regardless of whether or not they have them installed. But as yet this is not possible. So if they are installed on the GAF server it should be fine for everyone on the GAF server.

Thanks, i was wondering what I was doing wrong.

Damn, so everything's being wiped tomorrow? Kinda sucks but I guess it won't take me as long to get to where I am now the second time around.

Characters probably, universe possibly. Nothing is 100% yet. The developer actually said "This update will probably require a character reset," which is why everyone is building a bunker and stashing their goodies in it, to retrieve later on a new character.

So does anyone have any suggestions for hostings sites?

I'm currently using Amazon EC2, but it's quite overpriced for what I need. The server runs like crap unless it's medium instance.. and that's going to run $100 a month.

I was looking at Digital Ocean... any others?
