Fuck. These guys are right at the start.

(I'm invisible because I'm flashing from taking damage)

So the big balance update is coming really soon,

But we’ve managed to squeeze some other things in too.

The XP bug is hopefully fixed.

A new baby monster variant is added, we’ll be using this in the future to do some nifty growth/evolution things..

And a bunch of new weapons and items will be making it in too, maybe even a new boss.. we’ll see if we manage that one in time.

Do you think that we will get a warning before the #Wipe2013 goes live? I want to spend one last time with my character.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't turning off Steam's auto updates for Starbound let you play as long as you want with your character right now (as long as you don't try multiplayer) ?

you still have to up date, it just wont do it automatically

offline mode though...

Steam will notify you that update is required but (if updates are blocked) will give you a choice - Play / Update Now
(Im 99% sure about this)

Yup, thats how it works. I have had to confirm on both patches whether I wanted to update or play without updating.

Also WE NEED TO MAKE A GAF BAND!!!!!

I already got about 6 instruments including an
Ocarina

What is the trick to using the spawners?

I "acquired" one from some npc's stash and am wondering how I get it to activate.

Leave a place where you left it (teleport to/from ship for ex.) and come back.
Relog if nothing happens.

This. And careful. You can very easily kill your spawned NPCs.
Really curious how much this has sold. Seeing it right below Dota 2 on the charts is crazy.
Almost 151k preorders, and top of the Steam sales chart. Amazing that it has more players on than TF2, even with an impending wipe.

Hmmm, my Starbound says it requires an update to play, yet it won't download the update. So I can't launch the game as a result.

Edit: Found hte problem. There was a 700+ meg Starbound.exe process still running (I haven't played in a couple days so this was odd, must've not cleaned out properly when I last quit playing). Killed the process and now it launches properly.

As much as I want to make an awesome house, the fact that progression means leaving your house and moving to another sector puts that idea on ice, unless I want to constantly shuttle back and forth from my home planet and the frontier. If only your character's ship was a little roomier. :/

Unrelated to that point, I was going through the files and found the music folder and I gave some of them a listen. Most tracks are ambient (but sets the mood great) but there are a few that stand out, mainly the race themes. The Novakid theme is in there as well for some reason. I think The Deep is the Hylotl one, I really like it a lot. Suffice it to say, the music is a big part of my enjoyment of the game.

One of the biggest complaints I've seen in the main forum.
I'm not sure what they can add to fix this though.

WHAT, did Valve finally change how this works?

For years, even if you choose not to automatically update, you were always forced to either update or not play for any Steam game that used updates, as far as I can remember. So for something like Skyrim, you simply couldn't play if you didn't update, or you could update and manually copy backed-up files if you wanted to try to use an older version.

If Steam now actually gives you an option to play an old version without updating, that is huge.

Well, I'm about ready for the wipe.

Goodnight, sweet prince. :'(
I'm gonna start from scratch. I want to see how this new system works out from the beginning. I'll just not go to my old worlds until I get to where I was before in item progression. I never spent much time building structures anyway, as I preferred to just stock up my ship.

Meanwhile, in ocean.surfacebiome...
"musicTrack" : {
"day" : {
"tracks" : [ "/music/windwakerthegreatsea.ogg"]
I'm ready for oceans now.

I'm not sure what they can add to fix this though.

I've got an idea, and expansion for the ship that's a glass dome which is like segment of a planet's surface. So you can have a garden in front of your home and sit in your future chair on your patio looking through the glass dome into the endless space.

Or just allow us to beam a chunk of blocks and transport it to new planets.

I don't mind building multiple houses but I will probably keep all my crafting stuff and storage on my ship.

That's what my friend did, we all just beam into his ship when we want to make something but it's a pain in the ass and it looks aesthetically crap (yeah presentation bothers me in these types of games).

Now I want to just buy this game now. :(

Reason it the way I did: if you are going to buy it eventually then you might as well buy it now and play around with it. I decided that whether I spend $15 now or spend $15 mid next year, the only real difference is that I get to play the game now. It's very fun even as it is in beta, and it will only get better.

How do I get leather? O.o

I believe it only drops from getting the killing blow with a bow. I would invest in making the Iron Bow, huge power upgrade.

They changed it so meat sometimes drops from killing monsters with other weapons so I think they need to do the same for leather.

Prepared for the Apocalypse, as best as I can be. I put a lot of stuff into the 3D scanner and then deleted the stack, just to clear up my ship (it was floor to ceiling crates), but I printed a few things I wanted immediately when the reset occurs. What I hadn't scanned and thrown out, I put in the warehouse behind my barn.

Kill animals on low level planets.

That is definitely a big issue for me as well. Hunting for fuel/wood is pretty tedious at high levels that it is not fun to need such a large supply to travel. Would be nice if
plutonium and uranium
ores actually did something useful.

They could add a teleport button to your home planet as well, where you can blink there but your ship remains where you left it.

Has anyone found anything cool underground? The only thing I've found is a
sewage plant
. Is there more out there?

I found a
lab
under an Apex planet. It had a bunch of pixel containers but nothing else. Also under planet GAF there was a sewer with a bunch of frog merchants around

Well, I'm not sure if any other game allows you to do it now, but I can confirm that I denied downloading the first patch and played for about 3 hours and when the second patch hit, I was given the option (again) to update or play the old version.

I actually posted about this a long time ago in their suggestion forums because I foresaw this being a problem. My solution was a "Transponder Beacon" item that is a unique item coded to each sector (if you try to place another one, it will delete the previous beacon in that sector of space). You could then teleport to any existing transponder as long as you're in that sector.

Because the "Home Planet" is supposed to eventually allow you to do some high level shit like terraform and control the weather. You really should only have one of those. But having a base in each region seems like it should be a solid option too.

There were a couple
frog merchants
deep underground on the GAF server. I've found some
sewers
as well, along with what appeared to be a rough Glitch mining operation. I haven't spent much time underground though, I've just been checking out various planets, stripping any settlements I find for stuff I can build with.

Yeah, I know. Thing is, there's a huge amount of them. Right now I'm using the player from the very LOTRO site to quickly check which songs are worth trying in the game and which aren't. This is especially useful when using Fat Lute, as you can actually paste the song's text in the player, listen to it, then save it with the name you want as a .abc.

Are you using Maestro or the LOTRO player? I tried converting some .midis to .abc with Maestro and, while they sound fine in the program, they play like crap in Starbound. :/

I haven't kept up with this thread or the devs updates, but can we somehow save our items for after the wipe?

Put your stuff in your planet of choice, note the coordinates in a text file or something, go there after the wipe with a new character and get all your stuff. Unless universe is wiped as well.

Since others are showing their pre-apocalypse stuff:
Maybe I'll do more building after the next update. Much more of an explorer and digger person than a builder.

Hey Emitan, how's the OSX version so far? I've been playing on Bootcamp since the beginning, because I expected the worst of the OSX beta.

My Macbook Pro is old and busted so I can't really judge OSX performance on it. For the brief minute or so I played (I really should be studying for finals) it seemed to run at a decent framerate. I'd imagine it runs decently on a newer model (mine is from 2008)

I am now ready for the end of my character...which is fine, I kinda want her to be a bit greener. And keeping all the junk I don't need on the ship for removal

I'm having trouble enjoying Starbound and I'm hoping you guys can provide some advice.

I enjoyed Terraria immensely (171 hours) and Minecraft before that. I enjoy games with similar fighting mechanics (Rogue Legacy, Spelunky, etc) and I enjoy games where you dig for resources and greater challenges (Dwarf Fortress, A Game of Dwarves, Gnomoria).

I'm struggling to enjoy Starbound, though, because I feel like there isn't anything to do that's worthwhile doing. I feel like Starbound is Spore's space mode.

I dug down to the magma core of my starting world with almost no challenge. I then went to another planet and did the same. Again, no challenge.

I spent an hour searching for more difficult planets with no luck. Every system I clicked on had a max difficulty level of 10.

I went exploring on a few planets for surface bases and while I found several, they didn't really do anything but provide me with mountains of pointless stuff to hold onto in case I decide to use it for my own dwelling.

I checked merchants at whatever bases I found, but there was no point. I know I'd have to search for countless dozens of hours to find a decent weapons vendor (with no guarantee of success), or I could spend 30 seconds looking up the coordinates for a top level pirates base and get the best gun that way with zero challenge.

And then what? Now I've got an awesome gun - what am I supposed to do with it? I've got a big gun, a homeworld with chests full of junk, and absolutely nothing to do.

My very old CPU could barely run this game. It boots up but the game is really slow. Hopefully it gets released on consoles in the next 4-5 years. It was the only way I could play Terraria too.

Even Terraria?

Might as well considering making a new PC dude.
