Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Don't worry a lot of the stuff from phase 1 is going to be gone when phase 2 happens. You're not missing much outside of the learning curve everyone else is going to be past.

Well, I think I'll stop progression and wait for the char wipe. Burned out all the fuel on my ship and managed to store even more stuff in my homebase.

If the char wipe doesn't wipe the universe, I'll actually end up with a stronger character minus the pulse jump tech.

I did a short hair mod tutorial! It's not very detailed and I didn't want to get into design and pixel art theory, but it gives you a basic idea about how to make your own hair for the game. If you're not too used to pixel art, you can start by modifying existing hair into a style you want!

edit: Click through for large.

Thanks, I used your tips with the Char Creator Beta Tool to add some of the Glitch options that aren't in yet. I also added the clothing options from the other races to the Glitch.

I'm not sure if this has been suggested already but I think it would be cool idea to pack up a collection of the best mods (hair, hats, weapons etc) in a neat zip file for everyone on the GAF server so we can all see what each other is using.

So I booted up a 2gig Digital Ocean Server. Installed Starbound on it, and it runs fine. For $20 a month that's a steal compared to what I was paying on the Amazon EC2.

Also the .ABC song file thing is awesome. Running around blaring bad renditions of Never Going to Give you Up is going to rock.

I was looking at that for a dedicated server for the GAF server, 2 GB seems pretty low if you want a lot of players on at the same time though.

I'm waiting to see the pricing from Multiplay (the ones that Starbound is actually advertising from their launcher window).

Huh, this looks great. Going to grab the early access version on Steam.

Well my server will have 5 people max.

Even so their prices for a box is pretty damn cheap compared to everywhere else.

Ah ok, 2 GB for 5 people sounds about right. Most of the servers that are going over 30 are doing 8 GB or more, based on info from the forums.

Multiplay's servers "might" be cheaper, I'm only basing that assumption on the fact that Terraria servers are $1.30/slot. So a 6 person server is about $9.00 a month. Like I said though, waiting for pricing info, and the servers arent live yet anyway.

Wait... Character wipes?!? Hmmm. Not sure if I want to even bother playing now :(

The possibility of character wipes for phase 1 of the beta test has been known for a long time. It's even in the OP.

Might as well wait for phase 2 or 3 to get back into it.

Yea I'm waiting on that as well. Minecraft is 68c per person, Terraria is like $1.60? so I assume it wouldn't be more than $2 per person. Just a wild guess. I think regardless I'll give them a try.

Dunno if there's a proper thread for this, but if anyone is buying a 4 pack and needs someone to help chip in, I'm down. PM me if you're interested -- I can paypal you my share.

Decided to fool around with a new char. Then I find an all seeing cape. Had to scrounge up material and drop it off at my homebase.

I think I'll be going around with a bazillion new chars as possible just for world exploration / looting.

Do they allow you access to the command line or anything? When I was looking into hosts, I wasn't sure if they treated it like a blackbox and you were unable to do anything.

I'm really loving this game so far. I wasn't sure I was going to like it since I've never played Terraria but some of the livestreams and Youtube videos sold me on it. Progression feels a little slow right now and I'm still not sure what I'm doing, but I'm really enjoying myself.

TBH, I've never used them, so I have absolutely no idea. I know for Terraria, they allowed TShock support, and Starbound is supposedly very mod friendly, so I'm assuming they'd provide some way to install mods.

But they havent made Starbound servers available yet, so hard to speculate what features are available.

It runs solid on a Macbook pro 2010 13" with 10.9

15" Late 2013 rMBP here. 10.9. Framerate is decidedly all over the place at certain times.
optimisation/beta etc

Love this game so far. I hear people talking about the character wipe and storing items on planets and on their ship and such, to keep items after the wipe. Is that a multiplayer thing, or can I apply this to single player as well. Don't mind loosing my character but I'ld like to keep the 100-ish copper bars I've smelted so far.

This goes for everything. Your character + items carries over from multiplayer to single player and saves whatever you get on both

Been making a farm on the GAF server!

Wow, how did you run water up to the crops above ground level? @.@;

I've been wanting to start a garden, but am too OC about finding the perfect place to build my Floran retreat.

So that was you! Good job :)

I shipped off to some other planet pretty soon after joining the server, wasn't much to signal player presence that I noted on my limited time at the start planet or any other that I've visited since (aside from the obvious farm), so I dug out a massive cave system near the prison... then after changing planets I really wanted to keep digging and see how far deep I could go.

Apparently I got to the end :D if you look to the right of my guy you can see some stuff my friend dropped into the lava.

And bonus ship pic

What does the different armor slots do? I can have copper helmet and a snow helmet but only one is used? Or is both used? Or is it just quick slots?

...a glass floor for your shower, Soule? Kinky.

While we're already on topic:

Saints Row 4 invading Starbound, I guess?
I hopped on the server, fell asleep, flew to a random system and dropped my stash in an ugly glass monstrosity I dare not call building. Then fell asleep again. Dammit, why must real life get in the way of Starbound bliss.

We decided to go to a moon, after designing a gigantic improvement of a house over our last, we realized that that it was practically impossible to live in the said house at night without making it look like Castlevania:

#moonproblems

I also ended up going from looking like Elton John to looking like a pirate:
(was wearing leather armor both times, I just liked the Elton John thing I had going on).

I love this game.

The slots with the eyeballs on them are the ones determining your outfit. These "vanity" slots will not affect your defensive stats, but will override the look (and ONLY the look) of the equipment you wear in the respective "real" slot. Thus, you can don a top hat and classy suit and mingle with your fellow gaffers while still wearing butt-ugly (but awesome) armor underneath.

Ok, currently making a crown.

Suggestions on what the recipe should be? and which crafting station you need to make it. I think this shouldn't be an easy one to obtain.

Edit: OH! and stats, I can edit those also, shall this have any defensive properties or just be decorative?

Edit2: I've also updated the recipe for the mario bros hats so they're much harder to make.

I've decided i'm going to make a little hat pack and put it up for download if anyone wants it, i'll wait till I have enough made to justify it though.

Speaking of which, is there a way to hide a hat yet? My fishman is kind of bothered by all those helmets/masks/goggles with just two eye holes/lenses.
The hat manufacturers are racist! ...wait, I made all of my hats. What does it mean?!

These are awesome :D

I would say keep them as decorative unless they are armour pieces say like a Big Daddy helmet will have some protection.

After jamming with some friends I went ahead and uploaded my songs folder. Iv renamed the files and all that so they are easy to find(although im not sure what to do with mulit part songs =/) Anyway heres the link.

Looks better than the one I found.

This seems to be one of those games I love reading about, but don't really like playing. I wasn't a particular fan of Terraria. I'll probably budge though and buy it anyway.

I would say arguably that this is better than Terraria. There's much more of a direction and focus in this game, whereas with Terraria you just got dumped in an area with no instructions and virtually nothing.

Don't tempt me. I still have Christmas shopping to do...
