3DS Update Now Available: Adds Miiverse, L+R to activate camera, etc

They are not ignoring it. Nintendo already came publicly saying they acknowledge the problem and they are working to offer a solution.

We're approaching the handheld's three year mark in February. This update seems like they have the back end to sort this issue out (tying hardware ID's to accounts) and instead of a fix for retroactive purchases, we get a cross-platform wallet fund implementation to encourage more people to lose out on their games and money before it can be signed to an account.

I just saw a post from girl who was trying to post her friend code in the Animal Crossing community. An administrator erased it almost instantly and she received a warning from him. All we can do is follow each other (like on Twitter) except we can't ever play games together. Quite frankly, I'm just astonished by how dumb that is. Plus the Miiverse app is loading reaaaaally slowly.

Once again, Nintendo stays well behind their competitors. I know they're doing this for children's safety, but you already got Parental Control in order to protect them, isn't that enough ? Why do every other users have to suffer from this ? And I'm not just talking about Miiverse, but also shutting down the Nintendo Letter Box a few weeks ago. I've loved them since the SNES days, but lately I find it really hard to tolerate their antics :(

How hard is it for them to make an online database of hardware ID's and associate it with a Nintendo Network ID for purchases?

..because that's what they did here, they just chose to associate it with wallet funds instead of purchase history. So we still lose all our games if our hardware fails and we don't send it to NOA for repair (even then, we could still lose out on games if they choose to replace the system or replace a mainboard? Unsure).

Why are they just blatantly ignoring these requests? I thought it was a limitation of their staff being unintelligent when it comes to network infrastructure, but this is just neglect. It makes me so mad.

This is why "durp Nintendo's just stupid" was always, itself, a naive thing to think. Nintendo knows what they're doing, it's on purpose.

If you have your system replaced by Nintendo, you don't lose anything. They associate your NNID (and all purchases) with the new system before they send it back to you. That's the trick. The ability to authorize and deauthorize hardware does exist. It works like other platforms. But the end user can't log into a website (like PSN) and authorize new hardware themselves. Nintendo's got to do it.

As to why they haven't - and in a few interviews with some NOA people they recognize that people want this stuff - one idea I agree with is that they're too paranoid. The moment their account system works like everybody else, the hacks start. The FIFA-style fishing. Stolen accounts. Nintendo kids being stupid and giving out their NNID login info to friends who then go and charge up stuff on Mom's credit card that was entered into a Wii U. Stuff like that.

As with locking down Swapnote, it's shown Nintendo is paranoid about the internet and wants to keep it under tight control. When the day comes they offer the same functions and vulnerabilities as everyone else, their customer service headaches will triple and so will their network security investment. So they've ridden this "hardware DRM" thing as long as possible.

Nintendo is also about good PR, and after the "sexual advances on children" incidents that sparked Letterbox's/Swapnote's closure, I can't really blame them for being conservative. That exact method--sharing friend codes on message boards, and somehow disabling the parental controls--is how the predators hooked up with the children involved. It's a sad state of affairs and I wish Nintendo didn't feel they had to close the service, but I can certainly understand their aggression in minimizing their responsibility.

You can either blame Nintendo or you can blame the ineptitude of parents who will simply give the kid the videogame to stifle them - M rated ESRB rating and all.

They could fix this by requiring credit card validation for voice chat and community related services, but it's just an extra hoop for them to jump through. They can't even bind purchases to accounts and that issue dates back to the Wii - is this really a technical limitation or an act of being lazy? I think it's the latter and it disgusts me that I give them my money for emulators and they don't stand by their product. Literally a DRM monopolization.

This.

Nintendo's fandom is an uncomfortable mix of children and adults. This colors a lot of their community policies.

Again – this is wrong. Wii Shop Channel uses accounts and Nintendo is able to transfer them to other Wiis. You are also able to transfer them yourself from a Wii to a Wii U.

I tired updating the Plaza on mine just a few minutes ago and it wouldn't download.

It wasn't downloading the update last night for me. I guess its gonna be a shot in the dark if you can update or not.

I guess maybe too many people trying to download stuff from Nintendo at the same time?

I guess you're right. I just find it really frustrating having to bear with this kind of overprotected environment. I know Nintendo is far more kid-friendly than Sony and Microsoft but I wondering if the same cases of adults sexually harrassing children also happened on PSN and Xbox Live ?

Maybe they could do split the app in two : "Miiverse" and "Miiverse Junior", the latter being used by children from 7 to 16 ? Then again, maybe if they could, they would. But I think they're playing it too safe, meaning they're not thinking hard enough about other solutions and using extreme measures to maintain a good reputation, like you said.

Did you already download the system update? I was trying to update via the plaza initially and it took me a while to realize the error message was literally telling me to go download a system update first.

If I was asked to predict if Miiverse screenshots would be a thing on 3DS, I would have said no.

Pleasantly surprised.

Eh, that was one of the things I was sure it would happen, after all the 3ds can clearly take shoots of games when using the note thing. It just wont allow you to save them. So when they announced miiverse 3ds I figured they would just take that image and let you upload it, after all the image is already on the ram

From Wii U owners; how often do they add new communities?

Every time a new game is released, including eshop (+indie/vc) only games. Not sure if there are some games without a community in the wiiu.

I'm unable to enter the e-Shop on 3DS anymore. It says that there was an error and that I should try again later.

Miiverse works great though. Hope I can connect the e-shop soon.

Probably stupid question but I want to make sure... My WiiU has 3 NNIDs and I currently have 3 3DSs, can I just sync each NNID to each 3DS? Lol.

WHAT DID YOU BUY I must know

lol
The one game that isn't on every european eShops: Link's awakening DX (english). The French and German eShops only give access to their own localised version. That was my last chance to get it before Miiverse makes me settle down in one country forever. (And I'll be able to forever bitch about it with customer support if I have to download it again ^^)

Though tbf I'd rather play the uncut restoration.

Are they eventually going to add communities for all older games, or are we stuck with the ones that they have so far?

There's no reason to think that they won't be adding older stuff. It seems to me that the selection is limited for the launch only because the massive userbase difference between the 3DS and the Wii U, and they're trying to keep it stable before adding more games.

there's something i want to try but i don't know if it is doable.

can you link a NNID to one 3DS to merge eshop balances, unlink the NNID from that 3DS and then link the same NNID to a second 3DS to merge the combined balance with the second 3DS's balance? of course, both 3DSs and the NNID being the same country.

i want to try combining my balances from both 3DSs so that i can switch one of them to Canada to use my other NNID but i obviously don't want to lose my money.

I am enjoying the 3DS miiverse though I am kinda disapointed that you can't share screenshot for Pokémon X and Y as that game would be perfect.

I am really hoping that Nintendo update Miiverse to go faster as it's far too slow.

It was a complex procedure to make sure the two different Miis on the two systems weren't erased but I've done it. 3DS has kept the system Mii in place while a bit of shuffling meant that that Mii didn't overwrite my Mii on the Wii U. Just made a rubbish temp Mii to act as the Wii U Mii.

NSMBU does have the side effect of replacing all my Mii completed challenges with Mario's face, but at least they are still there and Nintendoland allows one to move data from one Mii to another so it was easy to backup.

Of course since the Miis stored on each system are different the Mii icon at the bottom of Miiverse 3DS is my 3DS Mii even though my NNID profile displays my original Wii U Mii. Hopefully nothing crazy happens.

Miiverse on 3DS is so great and breathes new life into the system. I love Miiverse and now it's on a system that has a ton of games I love, as well! Plus the portability factor makes me more likely to check this Miiverse regularly than the one on WiiU.

But, uh... where's the community for Fire Emblem? And the community for Kid Icarus?
