Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Ugh, coal is the most valuable resource for sure. I've haven't found many patches, and the stuff I do usually goes to a shit ton of torches. Going to be a long while until I get off this rock. Of course I'm swimming in everything else... even diamonds.

People are saying they're okay with coal but-- has anyone, on a planet (or part of a planet) generated since the release of Frustrated Koala, managed to find a large vein of coal, iron, or copper?

No, yes and yes. Coal seems rather stable across all planets I've visited. Unfortunately that level is rather low. Iron, copper, silver, gold and platinum all seem to fluctuate from planet to planet. Though overall silver is crazy abundant just about everywhere I've been, as is gold compared to pre-wipe versions of the game. I've got like 300+ bars of silver now and over 100 gold bars. I've even found a rather good deal platinum on the surface.

At first Iron seemed really scarce but I've come across a couple planets with a lot of it and so now I'm sitting on a quite a lot of it. But coal is still really low. I never see deposits larger than 4-5 squares and its never large chunks but the smaller ones.

I'm finding tons of copper and iron but coal definitely feels more scarce since the damage fix patch. Thankfully I had a huge stockpile from playing inbetween the balance patch and the most recent one, but coal becomes even more of a problem in later tiers since you have to use it to make alloys in addition to torches and fuel.

edit:
It really is very strange to me for everyone to have these coal fueled space ships. They should just let you throw anything into your ships engines and give it a fuel value based on price/rarity. If they wanted to make it even more interesting, they could have two separate fuel meters. Your basic engines could run on anything you want to throw in there including wood, coal, and whatever else but can only be used to travel to 'adjacent' systems or have some other distance constraint.

To travel anywhere, you would use your ships jump drives that require fuel of much higher quality/purity and for that you have to search for things like plutonium or other fuel sources found in dungeons.

Everyone constantly needs coal, it's not like copper where you can safely abandon it past Tier 2. I've heard that there is a Steel equivalent (as in coal is needed to produce bars) in Tier 4 as well.

I'm currently stranded on a planet on the server. I've dug down to the magma and only find tiny amounts of coal, not enough to get me off but I have to spend it on torches to find more coal. I've already circumnavigated planet and found not much either.

Ohh yeah I know. They need to let you turn unrefined wood into coal at least. I don't care if its 4/1 ratio to do it cause right now coal is very much always running out. I've only been going to planet clusters with at least 3 planets in system with at least 4 or 5 clusters cause it's just too big a risk to go to a single lone planet and hope it has enough coal to get you to somewhere else.

What the hell, the nerfed weapons are stupid. Obviously they were too powerful but now you kill 1 -2 people before your dead because it takes 6 hits to kill them and 6 hits to kill you :(
Also every planet I go to all the chests are empty and prisons are empty....I am on single player.

Some news for the next update:
All very welcome changes. Getting hit multiple times by the same attack that does 130 damage while I'm in the top armor for the area is pretty ridiculous. It must've been a bubble gun that I found then when the game crashed. When I went back to where I found it, the chest no longer existed. I hope they're also fixing healing to scale to your max HP. I'm only in tier 3 still, and it takes quite a few bandages to do any amount of useful healing. Also sucks to respawn with less than max health.

....I don't like the charcoal change.

They take away wood as fuel..so people could actually use the wood to craft because too many people were using it as fuel. Now they add it back with an even worse ratio... so wood will be even rarer.

> Drills now dig 3x3 instead of 2x2

Would really like to see something that digs 4x4. Horizontal tunnels are a pain. I could mod one in I suppose. I guess I'll post it as a suggestion.

Yep, pretty much.

An actual renewable fuel source is desperately needed. Either that or just make coal ridiculously common. The latter probably makes more sense.

For multiplayer servers I kind of agree, people are going to be cutting down every tree they see from now on since coal is so hard to come by (and so useful). For singleplayer though I love this addition, at least now if you land on a planet and can't find any coal you have an option to help you get off said planet. Anything to help players collect more fuel is a good thing, although I would personally prefer that they just up the chance of coal veins in the first place, as it seems a tad too rare currently to me.

Actually a coal detector would be a godsend. Some little radar or compass that could detect coal within a 50 block radius or so and point you in the right direction. That would be incredibly useful.

So the roadmap says the "Dungeon protection" section is only 30% complete? That kind of worries me, because I guarantee you they'll probably do another character wipe when they introduce dungeon protection.

No way they'll let us have all the cool dungeon blocks "for free".

I bought the game last night after reading impressions from this thread.

Make Character. Teleport to surface. A bird like creature shits a bomb on me. I fall into a dark crevice and get immediately mauled by what can only be described as a hyena-saurus.

What have I gotten myself into?

Things will be much better after the next patch.

A beta where birds are currently really aggressive. They seem to patch every day or two, so it will be fixed soon (see above, that issue is already in the next update)

I agree with all of this.

After making it to the end game pre-wipe, I'm having a hard time staying interested enough to get there a second time with the content that's in the game. I think I might wait awhile to see how things stabilize.
I'll probably be doing the same. Not that I'm not interested.. But my copy of Fire Emblem just came in and I haven't finished Black Flag yet anyway.

I'll come back in the next beta phase, I think.

On the initial GAF planet before the wipe, I was considering dismantling the USMC prison there for all the cool mats.

I was building a tower into the sky.... oh god it was horrible. I believe god was trying to smite my tower.

The birds should be fixed with the next patch, as others have already said. The hyena-sauruses, meanwhile, are just really really lonely.

How often do wipes happen? If the update in a couple days will erase my character, I'll just wait a bit longer before playing.

We've only had one so far, though they thought there'd be one with the last update. They've said that character wipes are part of the first phase of the beta, so if that sort of thing bothers you, wait until phase 2 starts. They've said they're still possible there, but pretty unlikely.

My current home world has green penis monsters.

any "major" update will cause a wipe most likely. The last one didn't, tonight's probably won't, but the one on monday did because it rebalanced a tonne of generation perameters and how weapons are statted.

Yes, yes, and yes, actually.

I was having the hardest time with iron, then suddenly, BOOM, I found a shit ton in one location on my planet. This planet also seems gigantic compared to the very first planet I had when I got the game.

So far, copper seems to be the biggest resource I'm constantly running into, followed by coal, and then iron.

I had to go a ways to find it and dig down into the earth (I found this crazy underground labyrinth that had some silver and gold ore, but mostly iron and coal)

As I mentioned last night, screenshots of my current base of operations;

Tried a few things out I used in Terraria (the columns at the front, greenhouse, etc.). Not bad for not using any difficult-to-obtain materials. In fact, there's nothing even off planet in there since I haven't found enough coal to leave yet.

Second tower will eventually have rooms off it, but I don't have any need for them yet so I haven't built them.

You've inspired me to start work on a "chomper" mod. It chews away in a 4x4 (or 2x2 with shift held) to help facilitate horizontal tunnel making. Might change the alt to 3x3 to help with vertical tunnels too.

me and my fiancee spent like 2 hours just digging through cave systems and found basically NO ore the entire time. Lots of mushrooms and a few crystals but not a single peice of copper, iron, coal, or anything.

Yep. I made 30-40 torches and now my world seems to be out of coal.

I just got to the Beta section of planets, and still haven't found a better sword than the first (2 handed) the game gives you at the start :/. None I can craft have higher dps.

I'm also getting my ass kicked by monsters even though I have the silver armor. Should I use a shield+1h-weapon at all? I'm wondering if they actually help. As of right now I get 2-shot killed by some monsters which is pretty ridiculous and frustrating.

And I can't find steel ANYWHERE.

Ladies and gentlemen, start your bets. What are they going to completely screw up this time?

I mean this in jest and in seriousness. I love how hard working the developers are but at this point we can all agree their QA process is 5 beers short of a 6-pack.

[EDIT]

My bet is on these two areas of code:
Nerf the hell out of birds, they no longer attack you at long range, lower damage, don't follow you forever.
- Monster projectiles across the board better balanced

Getting mixed up somehow and next patch we have monster projectiles following us for eternity and throwing birds at us.
