Fighting Games Weekly | Dec 9-15 | Funding Nemo? Not yet...

Oh and one more thing about that SBO qualifier. The birth of I believe in Mike Ross when he reaction ultra'd Haunts tiger shot at nearly point blank range. How the hell did I forget about that? I remember people giving Haunts a hard time about it, especially some on GAF. He checked GAF more often back then so he did notice and wasn't too pleased with that lol.

Saltiest drive home EVER. I got my revenge at Sunroute Cup though. haha

It was a pretty crushing loss considering we had to go through so many tough players just to get there but looking back now I am just happy I was a part of it. The Denjin Arcade SBO quals was easily one of the most exciting tournaments I've ever been to and as other have pointed out, it was sort of the birth of the current SF4 FGC we know today. It was pretty much the first stream like that (shoutouts to Slasher and Gootecks) outside of EVO which I think streamed that year or maybe the year before. It wasnt until after the SBO quals that streaming these tournaments really took off.

LMAO poor Abegen. Otherwise I like the bracket.

Nemo can potentially be beaten by MarlinPie because he lacks Viper experience.

I think Abegen can pull the upset. His team is unorthodox and we know it takes a little while for Chris to warmup.
Its possible. If Tron gets a hit or grab on Morrigan then Abegen's chances of winning go up dramatically because he has set ups for Vergil. If Tron dies Abegen has She Hulk in the back who does a ridiculous amount of work for a character who has no business being an anchor. She Hulk can get a raw air grab hyper on Morrigan and snow ball from there.

If its was any other player I would say Abegen could pull through but its CHRISTOPHER GENIUS!

Probably the worse pick Nemo could have potentially had IMO. He lost to Ponce (Viper/Doom/Skrull) at Evo. He's been using Spider Man as a potential counter. However, I don't think he's going to catch Marlin off guard because he has experience against Jrosa using Spider Man.

Even if some matchups look bad, I'm hoping the 2 or 3 days of prep time will make for some interesting matches. No lopsided matches hopefully.

Nice to see that voting system in place. It probably will not add a huge amount to what is going on...but it should add "something".

So nice work one frame link as usual.

Nemo vs. MarlinPie
Justin Wong vs. KaneBlueRiver
Filipino Champ vs. IFC Yipes
NYChrisG vs. Abegen

Couldn't have created less hype than this if they tried. At least Nemo vs MarlinPie should be interesting.

^damn that is a pretty cool stick.

It's a balancing act; you don't want to burn all of your good matches early on, but you also don't want to create situations where none the hype matches can occur.

I used that setup all the time, if its what I'm thinking of. Throw out a medium or heavy headbutt on Sagat (gives time to get charge). If they block it, 90% of the time they'll throw a fireball. Ultra that! That was early in SFIV though. Sagat players figured out that you could punish those headbutts with kara uppercut. Stopped that gimmick pretty good.

Nice to see that you're still around Mr. FADC'ing a Stranger on the Alps. Still the best official thread title ever for any official game thread on GAF.

Wait, that was basically a bait and not pure reaction? I feel like a very fond memory of mine just got destroyed now.

If it's the time I'm thinking of. You still have to react to the fireball, but you do the motion so that you just have to push the button on reaction.

Don't worry, there's always the time Mike Ross ultra'd a regular sonic boom (on Warhawk, I think).

I'm also not sure if SF4 is truly divorced as required, given generated recovery hitboxes.

It probably isn't.

I only hope from this point forward, that devs understand what makes online fighting game netcode good, and actually dedicate time to the online experience. KI is a good first example of what would be a really awesome future for online fighters.

KI is the first 2.5d fighter on console to use GGPO, but I'd consider Skullgirls the first good example period (ignoring ports/emulations and the arcade-only DBZ game).

In fact, I think Skullgirls still has the best netplay implementation system. It has lobbies, but you can either spectate matches or play other players in the lobby, rather than the digital equivalent of waiting your turn to play on one setup of winner stays on. After each match, the person you play rotates, so you don't have to just keep grinding the same matchup.
