Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

I still think the next most deserving Pokemon rep is Meowth.

Meowth.jpg

He's still around in the anime to this day, and still fairly popular. Not to mention he's the closet thing to a villain rep for Pokemon sans Mewtwo.

Anime logic though. At least one could argue Mewtwo was sorta a "final Wild Pokemon" in the games. Meowth was unimportant in the games.

er....Mega Evolution on command?
that seems broken, unless the megas are not actually more powerful but just alternate versions, in which case I have difficulty seeing any two of them not severly overlapping
If you treat each stock like its own "Pokémon battle," it's no different than the way Mega Evolution functions in X and Y, where once they transform they don't transform back until they're defeated... or in this case, until they're KO'd or fall off the stage.

As for whether they would be more powerful... Smash is full of disparities in that respect, so I'm fine just ignoring that element altogether and making them no stronger than any other fighter. It'd be treated purely as a "stance change" -- again, like Gen in SSFIV.

Sakurai used to heavily follow the anime for representation. It's why Jigglypuff, Mewtwo, and Pichu all got in. It's also why we had Oak and Misty trophies in Melee, and Goldeen as the dud Pokeball.

Didn't the Melee dojo mention Meowth was in the running for being a Pokemon rep but got passed for them wanting some sort of Gen 2 representation, or something to that effect? Along with the whole clones thing I guess, but also considering Yellow at the time Meowth wouldn't have been an obscure choice for Smash.

I don't remember ever running into him in Y though, guessing he doesn't really have any particular presence in the earlier post-1 gens either.

Actually, come to think of it, Greninja would make a great and appropriate Smash Brother in his own right. I know it doesn't mean much but he's EVERYWHERE in the meta-game, so there's at least support from the people who actually play Pokémon.

Talonflame for SSB4
you heard it here first :P

He's not in X or Y, surprisingly. I'd say Meowth has barely a chance anymore since Sakurai seems to follow the games instead of the anime now. Which is a shame, I'd love to play as Meowth.

What if a pokemon rep, like let's say Froakie, got to level up and evolve throughout the fight? Either through damage dealt/received/or time passed, EXP was gained and through a taunt the rep would evolve? Seems like an interesting twist on Pokemon Trainer, but I don't know if it would be fun in terms of gameplay.

Yes you're right that Tom Nook would fill in a representation role for AC since that series sells like digital hot cakes. Though we're not Sakurai, can we ourselves see Nook with a moveset and playstyle that fits into Smash - preferably not a clone of Villager? Sakurai has gone out of his way to differentiate similar characters, it seems to be, looking at Mario and Luigi with his flutter jump.

Lucario was indeed insanely marketable and appeared in Brawl while Diamond and Pearl were huge. But with Black and White, Lucario was effectively replaced by Zoroark, who was admittedly used less than Lucario. With X & Y, it really seemed that Mewtwo filled in that role after Zoroark. If you have a good recent example, I'm curious to know it, but Lucario hasn't been marketed in that same vein since. He did come up with Zoroark and Mewtwo as Rumble U figurines, but that's about it. He does fill in an important gameplay niche, I'll give you that.

Wolf Link would be very surprising and would bring a really interesting playstyle to the roster, but I personally think that with more Zelda characters in, the series runs the risk of over-representation, especially since it's a third Link. The same over-representation issue can be argued with Female Pokemon Trainer.

If lots of people, like you have, have also forgotten about Lucas, I can only wonder if Sakurai feels the same way or has noticed it and what that would mean for the poor little guy. =p

Wolf, I would argue, is necessary. He fills an important villain role in the roster. He, along with Fox and Falco, have big issues with similar movesets. But to touch Fox or Falco would be sacrilege to many people, so it makes sense why Wolf would then have the finger pointed at him, being the newcomer.

I'm enjoying this convo, by the way ^^
Tom Nook would be a bit more difficult but they could base attacks on him being a shopkeeper. He could summon or blow leaves that turn into different items/furniture since the icon for furniture in AC are leaves and he could also base moves on bells/money since the player is usually in debt to him at the start of every game.

Lucario has been heavily marketed for anime specials/movies, Pokemon B/W2, spinoffs and in X/Y. In X/Y you form a special bond with one and receive it midgame. Its also the first pokemon you megaevolve and is the key to understanding mega evolution.

I wouldnt neccesarily view Wolf Link as a third Link since he wouldn't take up another slot on the roster and I believe he is more likely than most other LoZ character options.

You do raise good points on Wolf and Lucas. I wouldn't mind to see either of them dropped. Just Wolf sticks out more since he SF had 3 reps in Brawl which is a little dispropotional to other series. However, he does have a place in the competitive scene.

Awesome, so this is the first we've seen of Yellow Devil since Mega Man's trailer, right?

...and then with equal symmetry, and the type advantage, would be Pokémon Trainer Y (the female Yvonne -- gotta have those knee socks), and she'd+ Chespin -- The cutest starter, he could incorporate his spines into his attacks
+ Braxien -- The coolest middle form, she could wield her pyromancer wand
+ Greninja -- The most popular final form, he would be a badass frog ninja

Ok, while a new Pokémon Trainer character would rock...
It would be really awesome to play with
Cynthia
, if not just for
her
music
...

One of my pet peeves is referring to Pokémon that can be either gender as one or the other (example: all Gardevoir are apparently female
50/50 gender ratio
for some reason
)

This is
Poké GAF
right, guys?

He was a Pokéball in Smash 64 and Brawl but I'd be down with him potentially replacing the 'Puff.
