I'd like to make the case for another character I want to see -- and one who I fully anticipate will make the roster:

Probably more than any other possible newcomer, Palutena has EVERYTHING in her favor:
+ Kid Icarus is eligible for another representative, and Palutena is by far and away the most relevant pick after Pit himself. Heck, the Japanese name of the series has "Palutena" right in the title. She's the "Zelda" of the series!
+ Sakurai adores her. This is plainly evident from how extensively she featured into his last game, Kid Icarus Uprising -- which may I remind you, was a HUGE game, practically a trilogy unto itself, with three acts that individually could've passed for entire games in their own right. Palutena was brilliantly portrayed every step of the way. Simply one of the best and most loveable Nintendo characters in ages.
+ Nintendo promoted the shit out of her: From the interior art of the game case, to her starring role in several of the anime shorts (including the two-parter "Palutena's Revolting Dinner"), she received top billing from Nintendo in what must've been one of their largest advertising campaigns in quite some time.
+ Her design is UNIQUE! She's a staff user, she's female, and she has green hair -- a refreshing change of pace from all of the blonde chicks. Plus, she's a goddess!
+ And correct me if I'm mistaken, but it appears Pit's Mirror Shield is gone, replaced with the Guardian Orbitars. I see a couple possibilities. One possibility is Pit has now replaced his Final Smash with the Three Sacred Treasures, of which the mirror is one component. This frees up Palutena to be a playable character. The other possibility is that the move has been given to Palutena herself -- she does have a functional shield on her arm, after all.
No matter which way you look at it, Palutena is likely to be added. There's no functional reason she'd be difficult to implement. She is current and a character very familiar to Sakurai. And don't pretend Sakurai's "humility" would get in the way -- it didn't stop him from adding both Meta Knight -and- King Dedede to Brawl. Palutena isn't technically his creation, anyways, even if he did breathe new life into the character with the incredible Kid Icarus Uprising.
I, for one, eagerly await the green goddess!
Certainly someone should.
so hey how about skull kidSome more conservative predictions:

...plus Villager, and Wii Fit Trainer.
On a serious note, I could justify every one of those guys, but of course I don't expect them all
Fuck! Someone shop Wii Fit Trainer over that motherfucker.so hey how about skull kid
The odds of her getting has got to be above 90%. The name of the Kid Icarus series in Japan is "Hikari Shinwa: Palutena no Kagami". Yeah, her name's in the title of Sakurai last game, I'm pretty sure that counts for something.I'd like to make the case for another character I want to see -- and one who I fully anticipate will make the roster:

Man forget all these characters , Sukapon needs to get some love being from Nintendo's only attempt at true fighter and could be considered retro being NES character.
I'm pushing Palutena so hard, she might become pregnantWe almost forgot that we're pushing for palutena pretty hard.
We almost forgot that we're pushing for palutena pretty hard.
As much as I like Palutena, I'd really like Hades to make it into Smash. Such a great villain.
Can we get both? Please....? :-(
I'm pushing Palutena so hard, she might become pregnant
...and then I'd make Sakurai pay child support. So he better hurry up and reveal her.
Animal Crossing is one of their biggest sellers and is a massive franchise. Tom Nook is one of the few important and constant characters in the series.
Lucario in terms of marketing is probably second to Pikachu in terms of usage through out the different games. I think he'd need to be altered a bit to better differentiate himself from Mewtwo but I see little reason to nix him.
Wolf Link/Midna- would help better differentiate himself from Toon Link and is a highly popular character in one of the best selling entries in the series. I don't see it as likely personally but I think it'd be a good addition to surprise people.
Lucas I hadn't given much thought about personally, kinda forgot about him. I could go either way. Two representations from a cult franchise doesn't seem too bad but I wouldn't be opposed to him being cut either.
Wolf- his inclusion was uneccesary and while he isn't a clone of Fox/Falco they couldve come up with a better and more interesting moveset if they were gonna introduce another SF representative. I don't think he will be cut because he does fulfill a role in the competitive scene. However if push came to shove and they didn't want the roster getting too big I'd prefer to see him go opposed to other characters.
Lucario was indeed insanely marketable and appeared in Brawl while Diamond and Pearl were huge. But with Black and White, Lucario was effectively replaced by Zoroark, who was admittedly used less than Lucario. With X & Y, it really seemed that Mewtwo filled in that role after Zoroark. If you have a good recent example, I'm curious to know it, but Lucario hasn't been marketed in that same vein since. He did come up with Zoroark and Mewtwo as Rumble U figurines, but that's about it. He does fill in an important gameplay niche, I'll give you that.
Just a pic of the yellow devil.
Bet it's nothing.
You'll say that if it's anything non-3DS.

I highly approve of this. I've wanted another Pokemon Trainer since forever (it being Serena/Yvonne would be awesome). The Pokémon question is an interesting one. As of Generation VI, nothing really jumps out at me as "this gen's Lucario." You could, of course, literally have Lucario transform into his Mega form upon entering the stage, and represent a recent concept in that fashion. But that might not be enough.
Personally, I'd love another Pokémon Trainer -- one representing the latest generation, while Red continues to represent the first. It's doubly appropriate since X and Y let you choose from the Kalos starters and the Kanto starters.
So you'd have Pokémon Trainer Red, returning with Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard...
...and then with equal symmetry, and the type advantage, would be Pokémon Trainer Y (the female Yvonne -- gotta have those knee socks), and she'd have:
+ Chespin -- The cutest starter, he could incorporate his spines into his attacks
+ Braxien -- The coolest middle form, she could wield her pyromancer wand
+ Greninja -- The most popular final form, he would be a badass frog ninja

They obviously don't command the sort of popularity that the original starters do, but again, just by virtue of the fact they're the latest and XY allowed you to choose from two sets of starters, means they should take priority over any random combination of previous generations.
Ha, looking back on that "wet dream" roster I whipped up before E3, I see I included Banjo-Kazooie characters. I guess my self-indulgent fantasy involved Nintendo reacquiring Rare, all of its IPs and key talent, and reviving the B-K brand (yep, that's right, nothing was ever made after Banjo-Tooie, mm-hmm, yep).
Actually once Black 2 and White 2 where coming out, they advertised him in a way. He was in one of those animated Black 2 and White 2 promos. Lucario was revealed to have a Mega Evolution as well. I think they kinda gave up on Zoroark since he didn't really catch anyone's attention or become big like Lucario did and still is.
So is it a stage hazard? Meh... I was looking forward to the Mega Man stage.

And Sonic was dead to me when he was announced for Brawl, since it was less than a year after Sonic '06 came out. It's not unheard of for deader then dead franchises that the parent company doesn't care about to be in Smash, look at Mega Man
Imagine how happy you'll be when Sakurai reveals you can turn off stage hazards!lol
Well damn. It looks like one hell of a stage hazard at this point..

If they were to bring back Mewtwo, I think a cool way to handle his Mega Evolutions might be thusly:
Once PER STOCK, Mewtwo can choose to Mega Evolve either into Mega Mewtwo Y or Mega Mewtwo X. Each would sport a new set of moves. He could, of course, choose to stay regular-ass Mewtwo.
How would this work in a time battle? Every time Mewtwo is KO'd or falls to his demise, and returns to the stage, he would return as regular-ass Mewtwo -- and could then proceed to Mega Evolve into a different form than before.
How would Mega Evolution be handled? Eh... Tie it to left or right on the D-Pad. Those are just used for taunting these days, right? So tap Left for Y and Right for X.
He's like Toad where if he got into SSB64 or Melee than I think he would've been more than justified and a popular choice, but at this point he feels too outdated and/or has too much competition, not to mention they're probably not really as popular additions as they would've been a decade ago.I still think the next most deserving Pokemon rep is Meowth.

He's still around in the anime to this day, and still fairly popular. Not to mention he's the closet thing to a villain rep for Pokemon sans Mewtwo.
