Is it still considered a success when you consider that they are working with Marvel vs going at it solo ala Street Fighter?

Serious question as I imagine licensing of the Marvel characters must cost an arm and leg the way Marvel is doing nowadays.

If memory serves, Marvel was very happy with Mahvel. It's great brand promotion and sold perfectly well.

Also, it's easy to see why Capcom might be worried that UMvC3 v2 would be risky considering how UMvC3 struggled at first.
Hopefully Capcom would know by now that the reason why UMVC3 sold poorly is because of how quickly they pushed it out the door.

Announcing and releasing it so soon after vanilla pissed everyone off, hardcore marvel fans included.

Yea, I remember all the blog updates from the Marvel side and shit. Obviously Marvel is a company interested in big piles of cash money, but they seemed to have fun with it. I mean, how can you not love the premise of the series? It's beautiful fanservice when you stop to think about it.

Yeah, it's funny because it even upset a lot of competitive players. Some people obviously saw Vanilla as broken even around the announcement of Ultimate, but I think lots of people still wanted to wait it out and let the game develop. I remember hearing shit tons of "we didn't have patches back in the day!" remarks around that time, lol

Whereas the pacing of SFIV updates have gone over quite smoothly with the scene. FWIW, I do think that a Marvel update would be well-received from this point on from casuals and hardcore alike.

Good stuff, dude. This is going to be really fun with Combofiend coming up with questions. One question, though: I voted on the test page but I had to refresh to see my vote counted. Does it automatically refresh after a set amount of time or something? How 'live' is the vote updating?

It doesn't refresh in-page. You currently have to refresh the page to get new results.

It wasn't a requirement for Capcom Cup, but I'm going to try and get it in by Saturday. If I can, you'll know about it.

You'll still need to refresh for new polls, as there will be a new one per match.

That said, I might remove the Twitch player and keep just the chat on the page for easy polling access, the idea being that you're already watching the stream somewhere else, and that page isn't meant to be a landing page for watching the stream.

And thanks for the compliment, I'm really looking forward to seeing Combo use it. To my knowledge, it's going to simply take the temperature of the match ("who do you think will win") but throughout the entire match, so swings in opinion can be gauged on-the-fly. We'll see how it goes.

Regardless, I want all the stream monsters to have fun with it. We stealth-tested it at NEC in the salty suite, and it gave some insight into how people will troll it or respond, and I've already incorporated that into how the chat is processed so that we get more inclusive, accurate results.

A separate page/tab sounds like a good idea. Something to switch over to during match downtime. You could throw an ad up on that page, too. I just wouldn't want to refresh my stream page and have to reconnect to the live feed, you know?

edit: I'm actually looking forward to some fun, trollish questions. Which is why I think live updating on the main stream page would be sweet as an end-game. Stuff like, "is he going to drop these lightning loops?" during a combo or "is Vergil broken?" after a blowup.

You did? Was this taking place when I was throwing up in the bathroom? lol

I wasn't too happy about essentially paying $60 for a beta version.
.. In retrospect im ok with it now, because I've gotten hundreds of hours of entertainment out of both MVC3 releases.

Whereas the pacing of SFIV updates have gone over quite smoothly with the scene. FWIW, I do think that a Marvel update would be well-received from this point on from casuals and hardcore alike.
Yes. I agree that the pacing of updates for SF4 has been pretty great.

I also agree that a marvel update at this point would be well received by pretty much everyone.

I would like to see the ultimate troll question:

Combofiend-"Press 1 if you would like to see and updated version if Marvel, press 2 if you think the game does not need an update"

Noted, I'll take the Twitch stream out, but leave the chat. This way, it sends a clear message that we intend for you to watch the stream on the device that you want.

To the question of how live is the data, the data is live, just the page that has to be updated.

Combo is also going to be referencing the results directly, so you might not even have to go to the page, Combo is the one that has to go to the page to get the results.

Also, One Frame Link won't ever do ads, it's a pledge I made on the Street Fighter Podcast with gootecks when he asked me the question "what's the business model?". This isn't a business for me, it's a passion project which I just happen to be treating like a business in terms of how I'm trying to run it (with a different metric of success other than money).

Not sure, Lee was on the mic, Combo was in the shot in the corner between the 1st player and the TV. You can see him checking his phone between 3AM and 3:30AM, that's when I texted him and asked to do a test run.

That led to him going on the mic and saying "press 1 for Snakeyes, etc".

It was testing of the data, not the front end, which was extremely successful
and resistant to people who wanted to troll it, H@ha!
.

I've also been testing in the some of the larger channels (League), using random words as vote triggers, and it's held up. We're ready.

Hope you don't mind, if you'd prefer me asking in the future, I'd of course respect that. =)

haha it's totally fine. I'm just trying to figure out when it was b/c i was chilling in that bathroom recovering for a good half a hour lol with the stream going (on my phone) on the floor in case anything died. Show must go on lol

I can't find the archive for Salty Suite on nycfurby or teamsp00ky, if it's up, I'll find exactly when.

sf4 matchups imo:

sako v chris: chris
tokido v gackt: tokido
xian v haitani: xian
fuudo v alioune: fuudo

i guess now that the full brackets are up we should do a fantasy bracket thing. i haven't heard anything from the cannons or srk in general about them doing another actual fantasy bracket, so we might have to do a janky one on our own!

I mean, it's not a failure, but it's not really great - casual players seemed very reluctant to pick up a second copy here on GAF.
Why isn't it great? Would you otherwise expect a title to go on and sell a million after the negative reception it had and you burned that much of initial buyers AND expect it not to have legs?

Borders on a miracle. I would have expected UMvC3 not to have legs at all. For most games the dropoff is dramatic too. From initial Vita sales, it seems like a very small portion of those post-launch sales came from Vita too.

It did well, but not initially. Most games aren't evergreen titles like Nintendo games are, so decisions for the future are usually made after launch. Since it takes time to get the ball rolling, delayed success means delayed decision making (or overturning of said decisions). Also, it's easy to see why Capcom might be worried that UMvC3 v2 would be risky considering how UMvC3 struggled at first.
Yup, this is the second biggest thing working against a potential update, next to the team being dissolved.

Realistically, how many copies would you guys expect a new MvC3 title to move in 3 months? MAYBE 400,000 ?

I think Capcom thinks it wouldn't be enough to justify devoting the time and money towards the project. If they thought it would do like.. 2 million, they would have already started the project.

Just playing devil's advocate here.

You think Chris will beat Sako?

I think it depends on when it's released. Around Captain America time, with good marketing, it'll probably sell a ton.

Is this Alioune's first rematch with Fuudo since the SF25th?

Yeah, it will be. Fuudo has been losing to other Cammys as of late (Xiaohai and Kbrad), so hopefully Alioune can step up to the plate.

Those dudes are crazy, god > autopilot sakura

That god goes on auto-pilot fairly often as well.

Sincerely doubt it'll be 400k in few months, but maybe Capcom is going for a digital only release on PS360update and a new pc sku added in.

imagine thinking chris is an auto-piloting scrub in the face of all evidence to the contrary

does the cognitive dissonance extend to thinking all the great players he routinely wipes are also just scrubs? chris beating Sako would be big, but it's far from unthinkable.

Depends on what format we're talking. It won't do 400k in the first month no matter what format though, but I doubt they'll push a retail-only release. It'll be like Ultra, with equal or more value.

Thing is, I don't expect Ultra to do crazy numbers, but part of the reason why they can do it is because it's a relatively small undertaking and they share so many assets with SFxTK. It's not about putting out a big release that gets them a ton of profit, it's about a small scale project that they can decently profit off of.

He lost to Alucard Boxer at UFGT simply because he stopped his neutral jump baits with Sakura. His gameplan is really simple.

People have no problem speaking ill of Marn or Wolfkrone about how they go about winning but when it's ChrisG people have to be on the defense force.

A completely new update/expansion with new characters, new features and environments? Probably can push to 400K maximum if released with something like an Avengers movie.

Another expansion will for sure do less than UMVC3 did, probably less than half... which I guess if it comes out to 400K that won't be that bad at all.

However, what most people want from the game isn't even an expansion it's a balance patch update.

One thing I don't understand is why people want alioune to win. My friend and I watched a european tournament (maybe dreamhack) idk, and we both agreed the guy just does w/e. He doesn't really have a gameplan nor does he seem to adapt as well as others.

From what I saw it was really sloppy play

they're like the same players and in this game they both play smart and capitalize very well with autopilot mixup characters, except sakura is better than ibuki and sako just recently lost to sakura in topanga league

Uryo only learned how to play against Sako's Ibuki after half a dozen decisive losses prior.

hmm...you guys have a point...but Sako doesn't fall into pressure, Chris G loses a match and starts complaining and ends up losing to himself. But yeah, Chris has a shot, and I'm very curious to see him fighting the gods

Playing an autopilot Sakura doesn't turn Chris G into a scrub. He's an amazing player, but he always goes for the same mix-ups, same combos. He has a plan and he sticks with it. Not his fault since Sakura is an autopilot character, like UltraBeard said.

He lost to a sakura thats better than chris though. I personally feel chris will get hit by things he has never seen before.

Man, I can't wait to watch these matches! Specially I wanna see how Chris G will deal with the Asian gods and Alioune hitting everybody with POS

sako might pull out the evil ryu as well, which I really doubt chris g has any real experience against, unless he played long sets w/ alucard

I actually like chris over sako's evil ryu. A low health character who starts all his damage off of low forward is probably something that would be really familiar.

I like Haitani over Xian this time. Don't think he's gonna make it past Alioune or Fuudo though. Especially Alioune.

Buuuut I think I said the same thing about Fuudo when Haitani qualified.

Sucks for Gackt to go against Tokido first round. I was hoping to see good things from him at Capcom Cup. Well who knows, maybe we still will.
