Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

I like stage gimmicks and hazards provided they aren't super intrusive, but I can't look at that Yellow Devil in the screen and come to any other conclusion. It looks really annoying.

There's a gray area I think of people who don't like playing on the same Battlefields and Final Destinations over and over but at the same time don't like the over the top bullshit of Mario Bros. and Mushroomy Kingdom Underground--I would fall among them. I love Onett, for instance (a very non-tournament friendly stage) but despise Spear Pillar. I would hope Sakurai remembers that not everything has to be one extreme or the other.

Don't worry Dialga and Palkia, I still love your unique brand of gimmicky BS.

But not you Cresselia ya freakish mutant.

This. Cresselia doesn't even belong there. You have Dialga who messes with the game speed, Palkia who flips the game camera. And they both fire gigantic lasers at you. Then you have Cresselia who just sits there and shoots moon beams at you. Why are you even there, Cresselia?

I like Spear Pillar :(

I don't mind stage hazards either. I don't even mind Spear Pillar. It's that Mario Bros stage I can do without for it being so tiny and exploitable hazards.

Hey, I like that stage!

hey guys, let's make fun of the Spear Pillar losers! :P

I tend to like gimmicky stages as long as there's nothing that pops out and damages you/knocks you back. Big Blue is one of my favorite casual stages. Yoshi Story with the cloud that saves you is my favorite normal. I like Pirate Ship but could do without the bombs, and flipper needs to be toned down.

but everyone loves Randall!

I'm really just curious if the yellow devil would do actual damage or just knock you around a bit like the tamers in Flat Zone 2.

Either situation would suck, but if the knockback isn't crazy then I guess I wouldn't be terribly bothered.

Spear Pillar had a sweet remix of Dialga/Palkia's theme. Could do without Cresselia though.

Also it makes me eager to hear the remixes of BW and XY themes.

Everyone is wrong! Yellow Devil is actually Sonic's final smash.

Just have an option to turn stage hazards on/off. Simple.

I hope the selection of Brawl stages in Smash 4 is better than some of the Melee choices. Top 5 for me would probably be in no order: Battleship Halberd, Mario Circuit, Lylat Cruise, Castle Siege, and Delfino Plaza. (Smashville would have made the list had we not gotten a replacement in Smash 4)

Also agreed on the notion of stage hazards. They can be fun as long as they aren't overly intrusive like in Mario Bros., Spear Pillar, Rumble Falls, etc.

Sakurai's already said this is unlikely to happen.

Thats a close minded approach. Everything else in the games has been more or less customizable to some extent but the one thing that actually impacts your playing experience gets a "highly unlikely" is pretty damn dumb. The stage hazards can STAY. All im asking him is to give us the choice to turn them off or on, and maybe for specific stages. Theres absolutely NO reason why this is such a huge negative that it can't be done. None.

For him to compare that to PSABR is silly because Smash has much more of a following and more clout that the latter. Just because he doesn't want any spiritual connections to the other guy doesn't mean its okay to toss away ideas like that. Because at the end of the day PSABR is in FACT a spiritual knock off of Smash. And he needs to deal with it. Those things happen.

I'm not disagreeing, but he apparently thinks that's part of what gives Smash its identity. It's pretty weird to me considering how much else you have control over.

Honestly, I would love to have hazard gimmicks in Spear Pillar, but the ones that got implemented were so awful. I don't feel this is a solution for me. It'd still be serviceable I suppose.

(in either case, the hazard switch is a good idea for sure)

Oh no I wasn't directing it at you. But yeah I agree with what you're saying cause it goes with what im saying too. Just silly. Smash has an identity on its own so strong that anything that comes after will most likely be compared. I don't know why he feels the need to guard it so fiercely when nothing is going to stop someone else from taking the idea and using it but with their own spin. Withholding game aspects cause the other guy did it wouldn't even really be a factor cause in most people's eyes they'll just probably equate it to it originating on Smash anyway due to its influence and solidified appeal.

Then it would be PSABR, according to Sakurai.

this doesn't make sense, unless he also plans on shitting up the roster too

bold=tournament legal, italics=not legal but at one point considered
so yeah, aside from Hyrule Temple shenanigans, I doubt the completely off-the-wall stages are actually fan favorites

That motherfucker. More terrifying than the fish on the IC stage.

Really. He ALWAYS seems to know WHEN the right time to jump out of the water when you're dangling on the edge. I know you can see him coming from the edge of the screen but STILL...that bastard is sneaky.

DUDE !

now ... like ... hear me out ...

WHAT IF when Sonic jumped on MEGAMAN ..... megadude like EXPLODED And them BAMNF and he like TURNED INTO A CUTE RABBIT ?

Coool, ahn ?

I think the Wii U would benefit from having some sort of stage like Pictochat that you can just crap on all your friends. It'd only be playable in local multiplayer, and one person playing on the gamepad could use it to draw stuff and have it appear on the screen. Maybe one themed around Miiverse or Art Academy.

Personally the one thing I really want is the ability to do a VS mode in local multiplayer. 3 people playing with Wiimotes/Pro controllers, and one playing on the Gamepad as Master Hand (or another Boss).

Interesting that it's only Sonic and Megaman on that pic, maybe foreshadowing Dr Eggman and Dr Wily as playable characters?
or at least both working together in the Story mode?

Obviously, they are working together with Bowser and King Dedede.
K. Rool am cry.
I mean, that's clearly a stage hazard.

It was also clearly a stage hazard when they showed it in the first trailer but people insisted to high heaven that it can't be.

Explain.

Big Blue and Pirate Ship forever, guys. The best two stages in Smash.

This man gets it.

Those ideas, plus a 5 player mode where the GamePad user has control over stage hazards, items etc. would be so good.

I prefer Spear Pillar over Rainbow Cruise.

I know it's early but we were talking about possibly titles for OT4.

Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U |OT4| Ridley me this, Batman!
Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U |OT4| Troubled Bets

this doesn't make sense, unless he also plans on shitting up the roster too

I know it doesn't make sense, Sakurai has some dumb philosophies like his one regarding ranked competitive online play. He said he doesn't want rubbish people looking at their online ranking and getting upset at how low they are so this is why he doesn't put ranked online battles in his games. =/

Sakurai is essentially afraid that people being good at the game will make noobs not play, which makes absolutely no freaking sense. Smash is one of the biggest things, period, it can appeal to both bases, wish he would get that through his head.

And yet Mario Kart, one of Ninty's most popular franchises for both player bases, is pretty vicious with online rankings. lol.

Troubled Bets or an idea I had on the IRC: "Shh, no tiers. Only pictures". Feel free to replace pictures with bets or something else that is more fitting.

Favourite gimmick stages?

Big Blue
Pokefloats
Brinstar Depth

Not sure if any others get close to my love for those three.

I'm with you there for PokeFloats and Big Blue. I don't really remember what Brinstar Depth is like. If it's with Kraid who would spin the stage, then I really like it.
