After a break for some retro-inspired gaming on my GCW Zero and Gameboy Advance, I've been back on my Vita for Blackgate and (finally) Dragon's Crown... Blackgate was fun, and I can forgive that it's not the console game because Batman on a handheld and stuff, but Dragon's Crown is the real surprise... I was thinking it would feel pretty much like Golden Axe with a couple RPG elements thrown in for fun, but it's much deeper than that. I was kind of put off by the art style in the pre-release stills, but the game in motion is a thing of beauty and the exaggerated characters really work within the context of this environment. I'm loving it...

If you want to see some real magic, go search youtube for dragon's crown combo videos for your favorite characters -- or check the Elf and Sorceress ones I posted a few pages back.

To say that the 'remote play experiment' hasn't worked as an attempt to save the vita is a little premature...

The ps4's only been out for five minutes and people who've bought one probably can't justify blowing another $200 on a handheld-come-ps4 controller this close to the ps4's launch and xmas knocking on the door.

Give it some time.

Footnote: the author does not necessarily agree with the ideas contained in the post above ;)

By the way: I was watching Dora the Explora with my daughter (again) this morning and saw a vita advert on tele.

I nearly spat out my fucking cornflakes!

Are you in the US? I can save you a few dollars on a copy of VC1 if you are.

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I'm in Peru - South America, lol. How much are you selling it though. Prices on eBay are not as low as I expected.

Quoting famourmort from the NPD sales thread: (emphasis mine)

K is shadow fall.

Knack didn't break 100k (at retail...). Is selling better than internal expectations.

Ps4 was about 200k over xb1. Barely moved 100k the rest of the month after launch. Sacrificing huge NA lead for huge WW lead. Xb1 will win December in NA.

Vita over 2 mil in US and Sony has absolutely no plans on abandoning it. The numbers are fucking awful though. Expect a price drop with the new model before spring. Vita tv will make it here as well, possibly through online vendors only. Working all that out.

232k for wii u. It needs to find a cheap niche... I think hd remakes is the way to go - cheap to make, don't need large install base to turn profit.

Nothing is dead yet. Hyperbole explosion. This is neogaf forum dot gif file extension.

So Vita 2000 and Vita TV confirmed to come here.

Also, it seems Sony is really earning quite a bit with those proprietary memory cards. More than 700k LTD sold in the US across 8GB, 16GB and 32GB.

Does anyone know how would those cost to make? They can't be that expensive to produce right?

well..I admit that I like your positivity.

It wouldn't be fair to call the Vita a dead product yet. For a handheld to sell 60-70K in the West where dedicated handhelds are going the way of the dodo in favor of smartphones/tablets and with no "compelling software" is decent. It's not staggering numbers like the 3DS, but it shows that people are interested in the Vita. It just needs the games and it will sell more.

I will say copying pictures from vita to pc is super fast, just open it up in the photo app and press copy.

Sucks I lost my silver again in terraria, was storing it in a room before I got my chest (just now) and went back to get it and it's all gone...the damn tutorial guy probably took it...or it might have disappeared when I exited the game, even though I saved it.

I would have jumped on board if they'd put it on sale at ~$5 or so, but considering I already have the PC version which I bought for full $15 at launch I think I may wait a while longer before I think about double dipping. Also Starbound is out....

Just read up on rooms with wooden platforms again and looks like you CAN have rooms with platform floors, but you need to meet some specific requirements - http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Home#NPC_Block

Easy way to check whether a room fits the requirement is to open up the Housing menu and try to assign people (your guide) to rooms, and it'll tell you whats wrong if it doesn't fit reqs.

Glad I could help :) The Terraria wiki is a good source of info if you get stuck.

Toto you make me sad :(

Fair enough, I only got it on sale price for PC...really is a nice fit on Vita, hopefully goes on sale not long from now but I reckon a decent amount will still pick it up. Thanks for the guide about the wooden platforms as well, looks pretty complicated so I've bookmarked for later, site seems good too.

AFAIK NPCs don't pick up stuff. Did you just drop it on the floor? Things despawn when you exit game. Got to store stuff in chests or inventory

Yep! Only just got the chests, should have gone mining for iron bars much earlier on, didn't even know that's what I needed lol.

-The beginner's guide from IGN looks pretty good too:

http://uk.ign.com/wikis/terraria/Beginner's_Guide

Thanks for all the detailed tips! Are you getting the game next week?

Btw I hate how that works about the rooms not having wooden floors...but I have so many other (empty) ones built already I figured I'd just keep it like this, will be nice as an eventual tunnel base.

Nice tips (especially the bolded), thanks. For now, I'm loving the simple mindset of "digging for ore/cool stuff by day; working on my house by night". Would be good to get a Vita Terraria thread going to share advice, stories and multiplayer games. I want to build.

Vita is done and Sony will be crazy if they waited more.

Those NPD numbers are pretty bleak. Particularly compared to last year (which weren't even especially strong then). I personally find the Vita a compelling game platform and interesting gadget. I'll happily seek out games that fit my preferences whenever they're made available for it, but uhh...I'll give Sony serious kudos if they continue to prioritize it in light of its US performance coming into the holidays. I can still hope for the best.

God speed, you princes of unnecessary back touch-screens.

The best game Vita may ever get just sold 14,000 units in the US last month.

Don't worry guys, Spain will save the Vita.

bring lord Cozy Okada and Okamoto and let them make another MonKon game. now this is what can save it for real.

still Tearaway is the handheld game of the year. :(

Vita owners need to buy games, forgot about waiting for PS+ sales (this is really damaging the system) and buy new games like Ys and Sorcery Saga. do not just look on what other system have and ask for that but instead Vita owners need to appreciate the good games they have and actually buy them.

The God Eater 2 demo in the Japanese store is a lot of fun and looks pretty good for a PSP/Vita game. I like it more than the Soul Sacrifice Delta demo so far. Both of those need to be localized at some point.

Dat attach rate :( hopefully we still get a sequel

I really wonder how many used copies have moved already.
I sold mine for about what I paid for it and was happy to see it go -- I couldn't see the point in keeping it.

And of course the numbers in NA are going to suck -- I watch a metric fuckton of television and do you know how many Vita ads I recall seeing lately? People who have a Vita probably don't know about it. People who don't definitely don't know about it. And if it's having trouble moving 14k units to an install base of 2 million at prices well below retail ($30 and now $20 next week), it must just be the most charming game to ever bomb/be sent to die.

Granted, A Link Between Worlds seems to be generating a ton of used market sales.

Amazing?

More like annoying :\

At least in the 3DS you can just copy paste using standard Windows Explorer and whatnot.

Hmph.

True but if the 3DS ever gets a proper account system then it'll need a DRM go-between app too (I assume).

Vita owners need to buy games, forgot about waiting for PS+ sales (this is really damaging the system) and buy new games like Ys and Sorcery Saga.

There's a real trade-off though since I imagine a good chunk of people buying Vitas are PS3-owners with PS+ that want to play the "free" games on IGC.

Sony pays the publishers anyway for the games so I don't think it hurts them that much.

Holy shit at those Tearaway numbers. :(

One of those might be mine. I asked for Tearaway and Zelda LBTW for Xmas and am holding off to buy the one I don't get.

Really sad Vita sales numbers, though I have to say I'm part of the problem (with software sales at least). Outside of my initial splurge on Vita games when I got the system last year, I've since mainly purchased PSX ports and indie titles. MLB The Show 13 is the only real "Vita" game I play at this point, otherwise I'm happy playing PSX JRPG's and the Hotline Miami's of the world. The indie games will keep coming along with (hopefully) some more PS2 ports after FFX, so pair that with MLB The Show 14 and I'll be using the shit out of my Vita in 2014 even as new game releases continue to decline. It's a real shame, such an awesome system that outside of some massive mainstream game release turning things around, doesn't really see much hope of being more than a niche system and probably Sony's last handheld.

GTA V spinoff would be f'n perfect for helping move systems or even a competent Madden/COD port or something but the meager install base means no big company is gonna take the risk.

Vita sales are down nearly a staggering 70% year over year in November. Clearly becoming the indie port and remote play machine hasn't worked as well as their last "failed" attempt.

Declining sales typically go hand in hand with a declining active user base, and with such a small user base I begin to question if anyone will even be able make money on Vita. Companies like NIS, XSEED, Aksys, and Atlus didn't exactly have huge success stories on PSP, and that's a platform that sold 20 million units in the US. Vita has hit 2 million.

You also have to look at the fact that PSP sold because it was hacked and people didn't buy that many games for it. For Vita, most owners have bought at least 4-5games.

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I'm in Peru - South America, lol. How much are you selling it though. Prices on eBay are not as low as I expected.

I probably can't help much there - I'd be fine with $13 + shipping, but shipping internationally would run about $11 (and take forever).

Nope.

NPD software numbers have been worthless for a while now but everyone still clings on to them.

There it is. Every high street retailer that I've seen is giving the vita less (or no) space on their shelves.

Surely the bulk of vita sales are made digitally? The wider vita population has been trained to do that from day one: we've bought the expensive proprietary memory cards and we've downloaded the bulk of our games on the playstation store.

Good little soldiers, we are.

I'm not too concerned with these numbers... All they're telling us so far is that we're not buying our games in shops.

You also have to look at the fact that PSP sold because it was hacked and people didn't buy that many games for it. For Vita, most owners have bought at least 4-5games.

From 2006 to March 2011 PSP shipped 281 million units of software, with total platform software sales likely well above 300 million. That was largely achieved in an era before cheap PSN games, and PS+ freebies.

Hardware wise, sure....not so much in the games department.

Bullshit.

I own all of... 5 3DS games now that Zelda has come and gone. If you include games I've sold off after finishing, I've owned 9 total. Add in the 3 I bought digitally and you're at 12. If you include the "free" games gotten through Club Nintendo, that's another 4. So 16 total games. 16 games and 0 on the horizon that I'm actively planning on purchasing.

I own over 70 Vita games. Discount the 6 or so in my list that PS+ gave me. 64 games.
I have bought over 20 PSP games because I own a Vita. That figure includes 0 of the PS+ given games.

So 84+ games purchased for my Vita. When compared to the 3DS, even with the freebies added in, I've bought approximately 5x as much software for my Vita as I have for my 3DS.

Not so much in the games department my ass.

Eh... I might be crucified for this but in terms of games and games only, people on the 3DS side can say the same thing as you two and what they say can be considered as equally valid too.

My personal thoughts? On game front, 3DS wins. On everything else, Vita, yes (hardware*, online, etc etc etc.)

Games come to personal taste, after all. And sucks as it may be, the general consumer already voice their opinion on the matter.

*Except of course, the stupid memory cards.

(1) Exactly, games are a matter of opinion. And the Internet and the "average consumer" seem to think their opinions are always fact. This is what pisses me off. I'm not claiming that the 3DS doesn't have a library that appeals to people. It doesn't appeal to me, but then again, I don't care about Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Pokemon or whatever the "hot" Nintendo game of the moment is.
(2) If the higher price of proprietary memory cards is the cost of having a REAL ACCOUNT SYSTEM THAT MY PURCHASES CAN BE TIED TO, then I'm more than happy to pay it.

Hardware wise, sure....not so much in the games department.

Hardware / Infrastructure / Everything wise, yes. The Vita is no slouch on the games front, either. Especially considering the huge library available to it, again, unlike the 3DS.

It's ridiculous to me that this is never brought up. There is a massive amount of PS1 games available for me to download and play for a fair price. Why can't the 3DS play N64 games? or SNES games? It's inexcusable when the competition is 100-fold better.

Do we have any numbers on how many Vita games have been sold total so far? (Digitally and physically)

The Vita deserves so much better especially compared to how lackluster it's competition (3DS) is.

Bullshit.

No. The reason that chart I gave you ends at 2011 is because since then Sony has been purposely obscuring Vita's sales by bundling them with PSP's in a generic "portable business" segment. That goes for hardware and software.

Jack Tretton said Vita owners purchase more than 10 games, but that's a useless stat if they're all $5-$15 PSN games, or PS+ freebies.

For the sake of argument, if the 3DS (and Nintendo) didn't exist then it would be smartphones and tablets eating the Vita's lunch.

I'd be swimming in Japanese games thanks to MH, and DQ though.

Why do we care about NA sales exactly?

SCEA does a whole zero to advertise in NA. So why would we expect Vita, or it's games, to ever do anything in NA?

Can't just shove something out there and expect to see it start a fire. Even if it was getting tons of high profile games, no one would know about it in NA, because SCEA don't give a shit about Vita.

That's very clear from their support of Vita (none, sans ports), advertising (none) and lack of first/second party localizations.

Still waiting for Invizimals assholes.

edit; SCEA is pretty crap for SCEE content in general. In particular the 'unique' things like EyePet (skipped the 2nd PSP game) Invizimals (3rd PSP game skipped, no signs of Vita or PS3 game), and it took forever for them to bring out the other Wonderbook games. Also no PS Vita Pets in sight. (should be called PlayStation Pups, wtf SCEE was thinking with that crappy name is beyond me. Pets title for a game with only Dogs... no.)
