I guess yellow lab or whatever model in Brawl is going to be playable character so that's why they went with new model.
It could just be in the background of the Nintendogs stage.
This is the logical train of thought.
Smash gaf needs to go out for a grilled food lunch. Where we can eat burgers and hotdogs and argue about who's waifu should be in the game, or why ridley is too big.
Also i guess assist trophy development has gotten well underway now.

I have a weird dream where Iwata decided to have a last minute Nintendo Direct to announce the information about Smash 4. What I saw is that trailer announced:
- Snake got confirmed to be in game, and few moves were revamped
- New Assist Trophy from Fire Emblem. I don't really play the game but I saw a guy with weird hat with two women were casting for the spell. It was long beam attack
- Unusual new stage that I can't really remember but I think it was some kind of Castle
- Takamaru got confirmed as well.
- Short trailer on story mode; where we will see Phoenix Wright floating in air and doing weird thing.
- many things happened in so much short time
- Release date: Feb 23

Nintendog happened like 3 times in the 300 hours I put in Brawl, it was the rarest assistant of the game to me. This also reminds me how Brawl surprised me and how this game feels uninspired, but I guess it's just too soon, Sakurai always delivers.

Eh, I don't think we should make new threads on every items, pokemon and assist trophies unless they are Betty worthwhile to have their own thread.i don't really want to cluttered up neogaf with a lot of smash. Pretty much. Besides I didn't buy Awakening just for that kind of thing. I'm sure it certainly helped sales though.
I understand your concerns, sometimes conversations get creepy. But find a bit interesting when you compare it to the rest of the nintendo franchises is all. I guess it shows some type of versatility.
But to be fair to you, one could argue they should have just shown their regular outfits
