Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

I think food/farming is a very incomplete feature. Dozens of different kinds of foods, but all they do is restore stamina. So no point in making anything besides the fried alien meat or whatever. (Unless I'm wrong here - correct me if so.) Different buffs for different foods would be great.

A lot of meals restore hp and give other buffs. In fact, after a certain point, bandages become awful. With tier 10 armor one bandage is one "bar" of health or less. I generally stick to pancakes.

I am really enjoying this game despite it's beta status. I see huge growth potential for the finished project.

I look forward seeing the end result when this game gets out of beta and is in more release candidate level. Despite minor issues, I'm having a lot of fun.

I would love to enjoy this game, but I can't even get it to work on my Steam OSX client.

Anyone got any suggestions or know some sort of secret I don't know about?

So I came back from a break and I'm a little confused as to how progression is supposed to work now. I'm pre-penguin battle with the scrapper armor and a 14 DPS weapon, so not sure if I should be challenging him yet.

All the planets I see are level 1. Did they get rid of the 1-10 mechanic? If so, are there still harder planets and I just have to be lucky to stumble upon them?

Are there any games like this with that pixel look but more focused on your space ship and sci-fi stuff rather then going to the planets and crafting stuff?

I finally played several hours today. It's lots of fun with a friend, and only one port needed forwarded which was really nice. With just one player, I think nights would be super frustrating, since stuff like the black grasshoppers will kill you in maybe 3 hits, and you can easily run into a pit in the dark.

Under construction:

Scumbag birds, ruining attempts at a scenic screenshot every time:

Your typical creepy lab. Even more creepy after stealing most of the lights.

Skyship, quite cool. The first time I jumped into one of these stupid propeller blades. Instant death. Took like 30 minutes to get back since I kept dying to monsters during the night. Ended up making the trip back with both of us to survive the monsters.

After admiring the view from the skyship, birds attacked. We tried to defend ourselves, but all the bird PIRATES took offense at us firing guns on their ship, and swiftly murdered us. Even worse, I think I left my torture table in that ship. I think it was the fastest-healing bed of any we found, so there will quite likely be a return trip to get it. At least we ended up with some guns at last.

Base at the end of the night:

I thought after you beat the first boss, you could go to a new system? I beat the UFO but I can only go to other planets in the alpha system.

You have to craft the starmap upgrade from the metalworking station and use it.

im curious about buying the game but what i still dont get is this game terraria/minecraft like? that you have to mine stuff and build your own home and so forth or is it more like a traditional game but with the same artstyle. Because i want to try it but i didnt really like the gameplay of terraria..

It has Terraria elements (Building things,crafting things etc) but you could also explore planets,kill everyone on every planet in the game, do shit etc.

I have some beginner questions: how do I move things in the hotbar? Like, I want the bow on slot 2 versus slot 6. Also on the topic of moving things, I put the crafting table above the teleporter thing; how do I move that?

Also how does health work in this game? Is it the red bar at the top left? Sometimes I'm down to 0 health and I'm still alive.

The core interaction is very close to Terraria, but the variety of monsters is significantly larger and the variety of bosses is scheduled to be larger. There's also more of a focus on traversal and finding easy resources, rather than digging for them. Building is mostly optional, but crafting is even more mandatory. There are several mini-dungeons that randomly generate, but so far only one really takes advantage of the platforming while the rest are more prebuilt structures for you to depopulate and loot or occupy.

You can drag and drop from the hotbar with inventory open. Furniture can be removed by hitting it with your manipulator or a pickaxe. The health bar is percentage-based and rounds down.

Drag them while your character screen is open. Yes it's that top bar and you have a tiny bit of health at 0 bars.

Thanks. Got another question: I did the quest that tells you to cook some meat at a campfire. I cooked 6 pieces of meat and I have no idea where the cooked meat went?

Ah nevermind, I'm an idiot. Apparently the campifre menu is a persistent thing.

You'll be really, *really*, glad about that when you are trying to smelt thousands of ores of differing kinds.

Thanks for doing this. I downloaded it and played Song of Storms on the acoustic guitar.

thank you very much for doing this!!

You're welcome!

I really wanna do a lot of songs on that one site... like bohemian rhapsody.. but you need like 8 different people for all the instruments and stuff.

Every single one I put in that pack is meant to be played solo; it's the entire song in one instrument (as I figured bands are a more involved affair that require distributing tracks among members and such), which is why...

Someone please please please make a music video of this!

For that you'd probably want a multi-track (multi instrument) version, performed by several people, rather than the one-instrument one I provided.

I'm at the part where I have to make a distress beacon. Is there anything else I should make that's useful before tackling that quest? I could use a new weapon that's not the bow. :o

Can I only craft what shows up in the crafting table?

The strongest bow and your racial armour, and a lot of bandages (20+ I'd say, but you could be good enough to not need any).

Make flat terrain as your arena.

What and how do you make racial armour?

Each tier has a racial armour set associated for it (it's name is different for each race). Racial armour uses the base metal armour set as components (copper armour, silver armour, gold armour, etc.), for example my tier 1 Hylotl armour is the Puddle Armour set, and it requires copper armour pieces and some iron bars. Equipping your racial armour set grants you your racial ability (Hyoltl is infinite breath underwater, Glitch is mine faster, etc.).

STIMPAKS MOD

HSaqd7h.png

In the end-game bandages and redstims are ridiculously usless, so I have made that simple mod.

Code:
Efficiency (for comparison)
Bandage :      0.8
Stimpak:       3
Super Stimpak: 5.5

Installation:

Download link https://www.dropbox.com/s/qkd6ejrjpywcvro/stimpaksmod.rar

1. If it's your first mod than just drop "assets" folder to your Starbound directory - it will overwrite only one file - player.config

2. If you already have mod that modifies player.config than:
- Download notepad++ http://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/v6.5.2.html (highly recommended for file editing)
- open player.config and under "tier1" add:

Code:
          // Stimpaks mod
	  { "item" : "Stimpak" },
	  { "item" : "SuperStimpak" },
	  // Stimpaks mod end

It should look like that:

Code:
"defaultBlueprints" : {
    "tier1" : [
	  // Stimpaks mod
	  { "item" : "Stimpak" },
	  { "item" : "SuperStimpak" },
	  // Stimpaks mod end
      { "item" : "mininglantern" },
      { "item" : "copperarmorhead" },
      { "item" : "copperarmorchest" },
      { "item" : "copperarmorpants" },
      { "item" : "darkwoodmaterial" },
      { "item" : "yarnspinner" },
(...)

- save and than drop "assets" folder but DO NOT overwrite player.config file. (or just inside assets folder drop "items" and "recipes" folders)

I agree with the sentiment that grinding for coal just to fuel your ship isn't the most pleasant way to approach things. It deters from the game's actual purpose, which is [inter]stellar exploration.

I feel that coal should be a starter issue, and at a certain point the player should be able to unlock/create a nuclear reactor or something that takes away the need to endlessly mine for coal.

STIMPAKS MOD

I definitely will try this..but I am going to put it in my mod folder and edit the bootstrap.

Totally. There should be planets with hazardous uranium veins that you'd need to exploit to build a reactor that would then last for absolute ages. But it would have a small chance of melting down after a jump, and that would also spawn a cool quest on the planet surface in order to repair it...

I still can't believe you are only allowed one tech at a time. Really hope they patch in the ability to use multiple techs at some point. Otherwise energy is just pointless as that should really be the limiting factor.

Fuel is not a problem later on, because You can use Uranium, Plutionium and Solarium as a fuel, and they yield more fuel per ore than coal.
Its a problem though till tier 5, because everything needs coal - fuel, torches and almost all upgrades ;\

Wooden cooking table. I didn't know it existed for a long time either, it's kind of buried in the crafting menu. Needs to be made at a wooden work bench, if I recall correctly.

As a human, there is literally no need to eat anything except burgers. The food of gods.

One thing I think there really ought to be is some TerrarIa-esque system of building houses. Build a lavish house on a planet, and then set it as your home base. Then your ship can either beam you down to the current planet you are on, or back to your home base. Ideally you could have more multiple home bases across multiple planets. This would give an extra incentive to build, and also solve the problem of "why bother making a home with all this cool shit I found when I'll never visit this planet again."

That's good to hear! I'm not too far in the game despite having played 20 hours, way too much fun to be had building a big ass house with souvenirs and trophies.

With two players in a party, you can currently leave one ship on orbit and explore with the other, and beam to either one. Perhaps it would also work if you set up a server, open two instances of the client, and have a mule character join your party?

You'll need an anvil of course, new tiers of racial armour gets unlocked at the same time as base metal armour (every time you consume a new Starmap), and is made in the same place.

Please excuse the lateness of my reply.

That's not even really the same thing I said at all. :(

Very tempted to spend $15 on this but some of the comments are scaring me off into waiting until the full release. Just want to build cool shit mostly.

I am happy with the game at this point and it can only get better. Only thing that sucked was the wipe earlier this week but no big deal. It is a beta.

Lol damn

What comments specifically ?

Was based on this thread a few pages back by now I'd imagine, but I remember there being a post about bosses killing themselves. That wasn't the one specifically, but the tone I took away was that it's pretty damn incomplete right now (I understand it is actually incomplete right now) and maybe holding off is the better idea.

Honestly though, I'm probably going to get it either way. I'm feeling way too tempted right now.

I'd wait. The developers have said there could be character resets as late as Phase 2 (though the chance is described as 'minimal'), which means all the stuff you build, all the cool decor items you collect, all the building tools you craft could be wiped out. That's why I haven't been too keen on building anything too elaborate myself (though I can't stop myself from compulsively looting every structure I come across for decor items).

Phase 2 is supposed to be "Feature Complete" with just a few bugs. At least wait until then. Right now, it feels like we have half a game (and a large chunk of that half isn't organized).

My opinion on waiting or not is this:

The game is AWESOME as is. The bugs that I have encountered are all very minor personally.. the biggest issue I have is inconsistent framerates.

But I guarantee you 6 months from now it will be exponentially better. Are you the kind of person willing to wait for a perfect game, or are you content playing it as it gets better? I CAN wait, but its fun as is. I will look forward to the patches and dont mind char wipes personally because I am fooling around anyways.

That said.. playing on a public server is very hard because of the framerate and lag both.

So I found Energy Dash and Pulse Jump, but after locking both of them on, I can only use the one in the 1st slot. Is this a known bug or just me?

You can only use one at a time. By clicking another tech in your inventory, you switch. I believe a hotkey for switching is planned, but I'm not sure. I have a feeling the way techs work will be tweaked over time.

Hey, to any of you modders out there, got a little project for ya.

Make a furnance/device that lets you drop unwanted items into it, and converts it to pixels.

Make it spit out something like... 25% of the pixel cost or something, that way its not overpowered.

I'm starting to be a bloody hoarder with all these useless items, and I don't want to just throw them away...
