Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

Other M's story was developed around Prime not happening, and Sakamoto treats it as a dubiously canon sidestory. It's supposed to explain why things like Ridley's appearance are so devastating to Samus, since he's supposed to be exploded into bits after Super Metroid.

But since Other M rightly bombed, the future is bright for Prime.

I'm still sitting on my unplayed copy of Other M thanks to word of mouth. :(

I thought Other M fucked it up and Sakamoto said "fuck that" and made Prime non-canon. Not saying it should be not canon (in fact Other M should be the one that should be not canon) but I'm just placing the facts that I heard.

no the prime games are cannon, however they're more like sidestories than actual full-on story progressing ones, always have been, sakamoto never said they werent cannon, infact I think the article people got that from turned out to be mistranslated in some places, the prime games were designed to not interfere with the main story.

But since Other M rightly bombed, the future is bright for Prime.

that's an interesting way to interpret other m's performance

thanks to Other M the Metroid franchise is dead as shit, there will not be a Wii U game. at most we'll get a 3DS 2D Metroid.

what i dont get is why Metroid's representation is entirely Other M so far of all games in Smash Bros 4

its considered the black sheep of the franchise, no one asked for that shit

and why did they pick that level? thats the one with the infamous cutscene

like wow i thought this was a fanservice game, not a game that reminds me of you of the bad times of your favorite franchises

come on nintendo, this is so dumb lol

Also other M didnt bomb, its sitting at the 900,000s right now, one of the lower selling metroid games but it didnt bomb, also people who think other M "killed" the metroid franchise are naive.

didnt it get a price drop fairly quickly? i would imagine a lot of the sames came from that

and it likely sold well below expectations, i mean a metroid game not being even a million seller lol

that level had the "infamous" cutscene, but people also say its one of the best boss fights in the game, and they genuinely enjoy the area

Jigglypuff-esque superior in the air mechanics. Problem solved.
So turn Ridley into a joke character?
Just kidding, but honestly, it just sounds annoying. You try to hit Ridley, but he just runs away. You DO hit him, then he can just fly right back, without any repercussions. And since he would obviously be a heavy-type character, it would be incredibly hard to knock him out of the park. I think he's better off as a boss.
He has a ton of moves, maybe they could give him a decent glide.

A more aerial or grapple based heavy character would be cool.
Same as above, but giving him grapples makes his playstyle sound even more bothersome.
"Oh, trying to hit me? Oh no, I'll fly off, which leaves ya open, and then I'll just chuck ya off stage! Fun, right?"

that is correct, but im sure it didnt sell "well below" expectations all the metroid prime games were million sellers(actually I think prime 2 is sitting in the 900,000s aswell but im not sure) but they were literally just million sellers, they stay in just 1 million, every metroid game except the first one I believe are either 1 million+ or 900,000+

...So how about a happy subject?

If you could choose one area from the Prime games to be a stage, which area would you pick?

Pick Sanctuary Fortress if you know what's good for you.

Other M was one of the few nintendo titles i know that got a steep price drop

i dont think the game is even close to being successful if it even managed to do that as a nintendo game

also according to wikipedia:

"In the United Kingdom, the game failed to make the top 10 and placed 12th in its first week.[93] By November 2010, Other M had yet to sell a "half a million" units in the United States, far below Nintendo's expectations"

Maybe the Pirate Homeworld, Phaaze, or
Sanctuary Fortress ;)
.

In terms of Samus alts, I'd really like to see her in the PED suit,
75% corruption.

A pinball table for SSB3DS, obviously.

I've been rooting for Sanctuary Fortress since day one. It's easily one of the best levels in the trilogy, and ironically comes from the game I felt was fairly dull in terms of environments all up.

The Metroid stage in the 3DS really should be SR388, Metroid II doesn't get nearly enough attention.

It'll probably be something from Fusion though, assuming Metroid gets a 3DS exclusive stage at all.

other m was like $4.99 new at best buy within a year of release lol

only first party Nintendo game I've seen worse than that was Sin and Punishment 2... which I bought from EB Games for $2.99 new =|

ridley_size_by_neoriceisgood-d6xy0r8.png

Oh hey wow would you look at that, Ridley can be made to fit into the same size limitation as all the other sprites. gasp.

Omigash. *0* This is so... So.. T-T

BEAUTIFUL. Can I has that?

NO. Just like that Mewtwo avatar!

I has the avatar list.

I don't see why anyone would want a rushed Smash. It may mean less characters, less stages, less items and definitely less polish. I don't want that. The Wii U is in trouble, but making Smash a sacrificial lamb will not appease the Gods.

Ridley's extensive recovery options would be balanced by the fact he's so huge that he'd be a big target and quickly sustain quite a bit of damage anyways.

My biggest gripe seems to be that they are going with Other M Samus because that design was from the latest game. However in Brawl they never did gave Samus the superior Prime design and instead went with the Super Metroid design.

I can't even help but think some of the Brawl Metroid Prime content was an afterthought, because hey westerners liked those games.

I never thought of handheld Metroid levels, but damn, SR388 would give me the willies, especially if it were in the original black and white.

I think the Brawl Metroid Prime content was an afterthought. Consider that the only signs of the series outside of trophies and stickers are Frigate Orpheon (The tutorial level of the first Prime), Meta Ridley (Seen in the tutorial), and the Dark Suit (Some intern probably saw it on some promotional artwork for Echoes).
Ridley's extensive recovery options would be balanced by the fact he's so huge that he'd be a big target and quickly sustain quite a bit of damage anyways.
But you don't understand, Ridley would be overpowered because he's too big to fail.

Beautiful.

But what's the problem with Dark Samus? Its name is kinda dumb (its the Metroid Prime after all...) but the battles were awesome! And then there's this animalistic and intimidating aura about it. Simply amazing.

I loved the Metroid Prime stage in Brawl, but I do agree that Metroid Prime is not getting enough love.

Yes, but in one v. ones he'd be ridiculously overpowered. How do you balance that?

He'd be a big target, easier to spike and hit with move's sweet spots. And stuff like Jiggly's rest.

Also they could make him really slow on the ground, so he'd need to be like Jigglypuff and have to be aerial to get the most out of his moves.

Have we returned to the how can we shoe horn Ridley into Smash Bros again topic?

I don't think anyone can vouch for being an interesting character in the Metroid series.

What

Sylux
Gandraya
Rundas
Ghor
Weavel
Noxus
Trace

Are all literally sitting there in the Metroid vault all with viable movesets and all interesting. I'm not buying that they are too obscure to use line either. How many people who aren't seriously into gaming could tell you what exact game Lucas is from or who the Ice Climbers were or who Pit was before their announcement.

Ignoring all of those Dark Samus is still a better option than Ridley, her movepool is wider and you wouldn't have to deform her in order to make her viable. Ridley instead is better as a boss and should remain as one although the lack of Subspace could be the death of Boss Battles as a whole :(

Considering that Sakurai has been using Other M for the Metroid references so far does anyone who is a fan of Metroid want this thing (That's still significantly larger than Samus) as Ridley?

Or this thing as Ridley (One of the only 2 Incarnations that is not larger than Samus)?

Also in regards to Bowser and Mario, their size difference is still shown fairly clearly in Smash Bros and the Mario series is in no way like the Metroid series. Wildly varying size within the series can be easily overlooked or attributed to Magikoopa or Bowser being Bowser. You can't apply that to Metroid and it's clearly more serious and somewhat realistic tone, Ridley has had a fairly consistent size in relation to Samus. Samus is already one of the tallest characters in the game, doing that size difference justice introduces far too many issues as opposed to using characters that are already somewhat viable.

The latest super legit, 100% real rumor points to Dark Samus and her dark chances being blacked out.

- Chrom was shot down due to looking too much like Marth. This also went for Lucina as well. His explanation was that characters in a fighting game like Smash Bros. need to stand out from the others, as getting confused who your character is can wreck the match for you.

I'm not sure why scale's a problem. None of the Pokemon characters are in scale. Pikachu and Squirtle are huge compared to their in-game versions.

(Also, when I said interesting characters, I was meaning characterization. Dark Samus and Ridley and Sylux and whoever have interesting power sets and boss fights, but aren't really characters beyond broad archetypes)

Oh shit. Run Luigi, run!

Phendrana Drifts, Sanctuary Fortress, and Skytown. Best places in the Trilogy.

Them bargain bins mean it bombed. :p

I'm not saying that Dark Samus can't work, but I think a lot of the issue with her/it is that Dark Samus's moves consist of stuff that Samus already does on her own, just souped up because she's a boss/phazon/whatever.

When has that been a limiting factor to a characters viability in Smash Bros?

Boost Ball
Missiles
Shrapnel beam/Giant laser/who knows how many other random beam attacks

That's about it. No bombs, grapple beam, screw attack, etc. She uses something similar to the shine spark in Prime 2, but that seems like a coincidence considering the shine spark doesn't appear in the Prime games. Go check out her fight in Prime 3, it's a goldmine of weird moves (Including the incredibly silly echoes dance).

When has that been a limiting factor to a characters viability in Smash Bros?
It isn't, I was just responding when someone said that Dark Samus isn't an interesting character.

Back to having no characterization at all I guess.
