Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Hey, to any of you modders out there, got a little project for ya.

Make a furnance/device that lets you drop unwanted items into it, and converts it to pixels.

Make it spit out something like... 25% of the pixel cost or something, that way its not overpowered.

I'm starting to be a bloody hoarder with all these useless items, and I don't want to just throw them away...

I'd make it more like, 5%. An Apex Security Door costs about 12,000 pixels.

Ok, 5%. I don't really care about making a lot of pixels, I just want to recycle all my crap. :p

I notice weapons dont have a pixel cost, so I guess, assign an amount based on rarity? like 10 pixels for common, 25 uncommon, 50 rare, etc... something like that.

The network sync stuff seemed to work quite well with only 2 players. Port forwarding only needed a single TCP port, and the client TELLS you what the port is if you try to connect and it fails, which is brilliant. I wish more games did that.

The only glitchy sync thing I ran into was some chests in the base. I had one eye chest, and I don't know if that triggered it, but the normal chests kept appearing empty when I interacted (the other player could see the items). They would dump the items if I picked up the chest though. Ultimately I just replaced the eye chest with something else and hoped the problem would not come back.

Anything procedurally generated probably doesn't have a pixel cost because it's another complexity to be coded.

might be a good idea to bookmark the modsite Haryu, its been out since Monday(the mod)

Quite easily the strongest weapon I'll ever have for awhile. This thing is dangerous because it splits up into smaller pieces and can do way more damage than listed.

Is it worth making an Iron Axe as my first weapon after the hunting bow? Also where can I find more iron ore on the starting planet. :O

I'd say it's good if you're on a forest trees, because trees take SO LONG to cut down otherwise. Plus axes, unlike pickaxes, never wear out as far as I can tell.

Iron is in the ground, if you're not unlucky. Your best bet is probably to explore all the caves you can find on the surface (your planet wraps around if you walk far enough), and potentially dig down from one of those caves if you havevn't found enough iron for an iron bow.

Is the axe good for fighting though? The bow is hard to use when stuff rushes at you.

I don't think the axe can be used for fighting at all. Use your starting sword or craft a hunting knife (so you can dual wield flashlight + knife) for melee. *edit* Oh, maybe I'm mistaken given what Delibes said. Just make a stone axe for cutting down trees then.

Either way, use the starting sword or a hunting knife for melee early on. It seems you are pretty unlikely to find anything with higher dps for a while. Most of the early weapons you can craft or purchase seem quite bad to me.

For bow fighting, it depends on the monster, but with a lot of monsters you can charge the bow, and if you can make the first hit be a powerful shot, you will take out 50% or more of their HP, plus a knockback. Then one or two more shots, if at least partially charged, will knock them back again and kill them. Remember that at least for the first shot, try to release the arrow when the bow flashes bright, since that will leave a pixel trail and I think is a more powerful shot.

i logged on and all my crafting tables were gone (in my space ship single player) nothing ele was missing from my ship and not from my inventory. Now I have to kill the ufo again :(

what method do you use to install mods btw ive been at it for 4 days straight as the game must hate me or something

I have afolder named mods in my starbound install folder. I than put the mod in the folder.

So it looks like this

Starbound > mods > [named mod folder]

Than..I edit my bootstrap in win32 folder in main starbound folder and edit player.config in assets.

Do note that I add from the mods own player cfg into the asset one. If you need more detailed I can post it here or pm..I am just playing the game atm lol

I got the pixel converter working but it was the EZ tier 1 one..the tier 4 version doesn't work.

So, after having gotten myself to end-game again since the wipe in a couple of days, I've spent some time trying to get all the techs, and find some decent weapon upgrades and such. Found a half decent legendary grenade launcher that can occasionally one-hit enemies in threat 10 planets, but other than that everything I've found in the way of weapons are trash. It makes me a bit wary of end-game though I get the feeling that they want threat level 10 planets to always have some difficulty involved.

Some of the techs just make things waaay to easy. Targeted Blink is ridiculous, makes traversal of terrain easy, fast travel around planets easy and you can fight mini-bosses by teleporting through them and taking no damage. The only downside is using it with grenade launcher can be costly for energy, which seems to still be a problem at max level.

I can't wait for ship upgrading and expanding though, as I haven't really found a solid reason to pick one world and build there. I take all of my crafting stations along with me, and have a bunch of chests around my ship for storage. I basically just cruise around X sector stripping the surface of planets for fuels (plutonium/uranium/solarium) and then moving along once I've cleared all the chests/dungeons. I think it might be time for me to put the game away for a few updates and see where we are when there's a few more features added. I haven't really had any glitches with the game so nothing really to report there for the devs, but enjoying the game a fair bit so far.
I've been playing a fair bit of end-game again and I have the same feelings. There's something that is missing.

There needs to be more to find than weapons and random blueprints. Maybe finding cool armor sets (rather than just costumes) would make the game more exciting. Right now though, things are just too much rng. The weapons you find are almost never an upgrade to the ones you craft and the ones that the mini-bosses drop are quite severely underpowered. Food is mostly pointless since buffs aren't implemented yet. I keep tons in my inventory and continuously grow new crops, however I always have way more than I need and could probably stop growing them for a long while.

There are a lot of cool dungeons or temples to take away from the randomness, however there are usually no chests in these so there's not a lot to find aside from the rare decorations. It would be great to use these for building up a planet, however as has been stated many times, the fuel requirement for traveling back and forth to a home base is too much of a drag. Even though fuel is plentiful in high levels (plutonium, uranium, solarium), you get tired of digging these up as you traverse a planet.

Some techs are definitely too overpowered. They have nerfed the butterfly bubble tech to decrease energy so that you can't keep it on infinitely, though it's still way more useful than all the rest.

The idea of traveling to new planets and warping to them is still satisfying despite not having much to do. However, at end game, I only search out the level 10 planets for a chance to find better weapons. This leaves almost all of the planets ignored as there are very few level 10 planets in comparison. Maybe in the last sector the planets should be given the same priority scaling for loot to make things more interesting. Seeking only level 10 planets to explore isn't very fun.

Right now I think the most exciting thing to do is finding different types of chests and musical instruments.

So I went exploring down a drainage I found, first thing I spot is a mighty looking poo humanoid creature (I say to myself, should be a piece of cake with the new titanium armor I just crafted) Wrong hunch, little time to escape got mashed into dust by a 150 fierceful strike, holy shit indeed. Went again and played it safe with my gun from above :)

I also noticed the sipder bots barely do anything, maybe their AI is broken?

Also is there any stuff to avoid getting frozen to death in snow based planets? Taking my time while shoping in a snowy village was not the best idea haha.

Oh and how do I harvest crops? I definitely planted them and they are growing but I cant harvest it seems.

Press E standing next to the crop you want to harvest.

Just came to post this. 255MB and nothing on their Twitter account as of yet it and nothing in the launcher.

One of the devs on twitter said its a new build stripped of all the symbols (whatever that means). But other than that, no actual patch notes.

Server is updated, and should be back up.

EDIT: Looks like character and universe data is still there. All clear.

patch notes. *edit* nm closer013 got em first. Thanks!

I know it sounds stupid but I get really confused when they say "We aren't wiping characters or worlds, but if you want to experience the proper balance
you should make a new character/worlds to play it on!" Making a new character doesn't make a new world does it? I was under the impression it didn't. What exactly out of those patch notes wouldn't you be getting if you just stuck with your current character? So lost when it comes to these things. Especially if its 3 of these patches in a row. Would somebody that has yet to restart a character be 3 patches behind in terms of changes and balancing? or would they only be missing out on a few key things.

I'm not 100% positive but I'm pretty sure when they rebalance items, if you still use your character and planets used in the prior build, those old items are still there with their old values. For example, when the weapons were crazy strong, if you didn't create a new character, they were still there after the update.

Items and maps are set in stone once they're created: for worlds and the treasure on them this is the first time you land and for your ship it's on character creation. So when combat balance is tweaked or new items are added, items under the new model will only appear in chests of worlds you hadn't landed on before the patch. (They should still drop from NPCs on existing worlds.) Likewise, only ships generated after the patch a couple days ago are marked as "safe", so you have to create a new ship, which means a new character, to not take damage aboard.

We went through the same thing with Terraria. After certain updates, they recommended we create new characters/create new worlds in order to take advantage of any new changes that a update introduced.

Concerning Starbound though... since they're recommending it, I'm not against a universe reset, since the purpose of the beta is to test stuff thoroughly, and we'd probably miss stuff if we don't do a wipe. Soooo... Universe wipe will probably kick in around 7 or 8am, EST (in about 6 or 7 hours) You have until then to get anything important you have on the server, off the server.

The OP weapons all got nerfed and there was no super weapons left after that patch for me with the same character. Same for everyone playing on my server.

Thanks for the replies. I think to make the most of it I will pass some of my items and ore to a friend on multiplayer, make a new character and get them passed back. I know it kind of defeats some of the purpose but I'd like to keep my diamond pickaxe, ores, 1-2 weapons, and all my instruments. Especially while I can without a forced restart.

Actually the more I think about it, not sure I see much point in starting over. I have yet to build anything I care about on any planets and going forward I'll be mostly going to completely new ones.

Also is there any stuff to avoid getting frozen to death in snow based planets? Taking my time while shoping in a snowy village was not the best idea haha.
I nearly froze to death in a slime cave, but a single piece of snow chest armor seems to take care of any cold environment I have seen so far. If that doesn't help you can use the whole suit, but I think the chest armor is fine.

Two questions:

1. After a patch hits, if I go to a planet I haven't been to before, will that generate that planet using the new stuff, or do I have to make a completely new character?

2. I think I heard someone say each starmap is a one-time use thing. Do I only get one use to go to the beta sector, and if I go back to alpha I need another map for beta again?

(Someone please tell me if I should spoiler any of the above -- as far as I know it's pretty basic and well-known)

just got the game, going in mostly blind.

i crafted a cobble furnace before finishing the hunting quest, do i have to make a second one now?

Can I transfer items to a new character in single player? Mainly just want to give all my tools and work surfaces to the new char.
