Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

I'm still only in beta sector, so probably no need for me to wipe.

I've been having some crappy luck with finding interesting stuff however! The most interesting stuff I've found are like... flesh blocks. No legendary weapons, heck no weapons better than what I can craft in the beta sector, no underground bases even - but a few above ground ones.

I'm not expecting this to be diablo or anything, but is it just me? Do other people often find cool shit, or does it happen more often in later sectors?

The first planet I got to in Beta sector had a cool little area where I managed to find tons of new weapons better than my newly crafted steel dagger.

Also I'm under the impression all you have to do is remake some of the starmaps to get everything you would be missing from making a new character?

Anyone know what exactly that new chars have that old ones don't? They didn't really say anything on that.

Right now it's possible for an old char to get the new stuff by just remaking starmaps but are there any character file details that new ones get that old ones don't have?

I dont wanna lose my girl...again. The only thing that I remember in the patch was something about being invincible on ships.

So a bunch of people explained this kind of stuff to me last night but this is one thing I'm not sure of. When they say make a new character/world, can't you literally visit the same planet with a new character? or would that basically be only keeping what you put in a chest and everything else would update and have the proper balance and changes.
I'm not sure how existing planets work with balance changes and updates. I do know that at the very least, changes you make to planets are saved and remain constant among all your characters. I'd expect that only planets you have never flown to will have all the latest balance changes, but with the way saves seem to work - how it supposedly only saves the changes you make, that makes things a bit weird and hard to understand.

As far as I can tell, the only reason to make a new character, besides the obvious reasons, is if they add recipes to tier 1. If they add to tier 2 or up, it's fine, you can just remake the unlock item. A mod might be able to work around this with a tier 1 unlock item.

Oh, right, there is that too. I'm not sure if that has to do with your actual character, or the ship file though.

Ok next question would be can anyone confirm if any of the new stuff is crafted at tier1 that we would be missing out on?

In looking at the player.config, all of the tier 1 craftables look the same to me. Have a look in it yourself if you want. It's in the assets folder.

Curious, are dungeons on the surface(Tombs / Prisions / ETC) always hostile to you or will they not attack if you're the 'right' race?

I guess you would want to kill them all for the pixels anyway though.

So I got to the sector X. Everything I need to craft requires Aegisalt but I can't find that anywhere. Only cerullium and uranium. Also the threat level is stupid. Jumped from like 4 on delta to 7... Enemies one shot me.

Aegisalt bar is made from Cerullium bar + coal in metallurgy :) Thats Volium

Aegisalt will be available in planets threat 5 and 6.

I found a new schematic for a tech, it says "human mech" not sure how to use it, any ideas?

After using a tech schematic, it becomes available to equip in the Tech Station on your ship. You can have up to four equipped at a time and change between them by clicking the icon in your inventory. Most toggle-able techs(including the Human Mech) are toggled with the F key while movement based ones involve the movement keys, spacebar or a combination of the two.

This one will come in handy for the next boss, thanks a bunch :D

Took my first forays into modding, after the initial hump of learning where all the files are and how they interact, I made a couple of craftable guns since I felt guns were too rare and there's a real deficit of technology.

But I soon found out that with the recent patch (I think) that the energy cost for firing a gun is tied to its damage and level. For example, level 1 guns deplete 5 energy per 1 damage, level 2 guns deplete 3.5 energy per 1 damage, etc. I'm not sure if there's a way to override this with a function in the .gun files, but if there isn't it removes the customization from making different guns. Hope we can manually define energy cost per shot in a later patch, I figure this change broke a lot of mod gun balance. Since the levels only go up to 10, maybe I could allocate levels 11-100 to individual custom-made guns and tweak energy cost that way.

I've also made a super bandage as a proof of concept, and maybe tomorrow I will try and create a rocket fist that you have to charge up that explodes on impact.

Also I suck at pixel art :P

Oh. Weird I didnt know the threat level of a planet dictated which ores you could get.

I cant even find any X sector planets with that thread level. The lowest is 7 or something.

Holy shit, YESSSSSSS. Now you can have one planet for terraforming and chilling off, AND explore the galaxy at leisure. Game changer, etc.

The server has been wiped/reset, and is now back up.

Looks like they added a MAX PLAYER LIMIT to the config file, but I increased that just in case.

I rescued all the seeds I could before the wipe; I remade the christmas tree/garden, although slightly bigger, also decorating it with round/shiny objects; the floran spherical lights and plasma globe-like things are best for this. If anyone wants to decorate it as well, feel free! Also feel free to pick any ripe fruits, but please replant the seeds!

Weird, now the florian sees the racial armor, and I don't see human racial armor. What unlocks it on the
spinning wheel
?

Acutally I don't even see copper armor recipes anymore. What unlocks that?

"Armor" (of which the iron, steel, etc. sets are racial) as such is made on the anvil. "Clothes" (of which three sets, the starting choices for your race, are racial) are made on the spinning wheel.

You dont see them?

Thats basic armor through the iron anvil, they should be there.

Hmm only downside of starting a new character is the lack of pulse jump. :(

Oh and when do Nova Kids come out as a playable race?

After beta.

Hey, I'm just noticing something... was there two updates since yesterday? The one that kicked in around midnight EST last night, and looking at Steam, another one was downloaded around 8AM today? Size says its 1 GB.

I really hope I will be able to finish it someday... right now putting all necessary lights on it (much more than in this image) kills my laptop :) It's like 10 - or so - condensed prisons.

Anyway - I love ship-modding posibilities in Starbound

jeeeesus, that looks awesome

I am no architect but I like to think that I didn't do too bad of a work on this.

Quite cozy.

I like it. I haven't attempted to make anything too big yet because of all the restarts I'm having to do, but this was my first real attempt at an actual house:

Now that the home planet warp option is coming I might start building more seriously on a home planet.

It's weird, neither wiki I'm looking at seems to have information about how much damage the bow types do. I assume a steel bow does more, but I don't know how much!

I get so frustrated with my friends who have no eye for design. Their houses are just mish-mash, and they throw out random blocks when exploring that almost always clash with the environment.

But I'm closer to them than anyone on the GAF server, and that's what counts.

Please, help me understand how you become stronger/better equipped in this game.

I've just reached the Beta sector, but it doesn't appear any different than the Alpha sector, aside from every enemy doing 80% or so damage per hit on me, and I need to hit them multiple times with my level 1 sword to take them down. And the only reason I ever managed to take down the UFO was because I built a fortress of obsidian with gaps in it that I could snipe through.

I've built everything that seems relevant, which isn't a whole lot. I've upgraded my pickaxe to platinum. I got the armor created by combining some other armor plus steel (and it's entirely inadequate.) I'm at a loss for what to do, other than spending the next 25 hours hunting for chests. How are you supposed to progress?
