Final Fantasy VII has aged extremely well

Visually the pre 3D FF games have aged much much better.

Having finished the game for the first time earlier this year, I agree. I really liked it, but found the story kind of confusing to be honest.

That's what keeps it from being the best ever for me. I do love that game and have fond memories of my play throughs. Oddly enough, Final Fantasy 2 (SNES) and 3(SNES) get more play throughs from me. Maybe I'm due for another FF7 run.

Did Squeenix ever fix the atrocious english translation?

What? Look, I'm not going to dispute that it could have used some revision/proofreading (fairly understandable for something done by one person under non-ideal circumstances), but there are some actual atrocious RPG translations out there that don't manage to do fundamental things like express the characters' personalities or identify items in a legible manner. If FF7 is the worst you've ever played, you have it pretty good.

Most people who says have actually never played a pre FFVII game.

I played both VI and VII to death and I still have fonder memories of VII. I love both games almost equally though.

FFVII opened the flood gate for JRPGs that FF VI couldn't.

The game is great, but you're living in denial if you don't think characters look like crap.

They look quite good in combat. Much better than the old 2D sprites.

I first played it in 2010. My first playthrough lasted Feb-May. I decided to replay it at Xmas of that year. Finished it in a week.

A masterpiece that took all of my attention in spite of the PS3 releases of that year.

Even the other FFs of that era hold up today.

Raziels post just owned every hater.

The graphics render the game barely playable. Many times I didn't see where to go because of the absolutely awful graphics. The way to play this is using the latest PC mods.
Whoa, this looks good. Playing this on my TV with an HDMI cable... I'm getting ideas.

edit: are we seriously comparing a SNES game with a PS1 game to prove that FFVII has good graphics? smh

Dunno why it pleases me so to read posts like this, but it does. :)

I just started playing this on the VitaTV. It's my first time playing through it in Japanese, hope it doesn't get too difficult :lol

Remap the dpad to the analog stick on Vita! Problem solved!

Don't have a Vita? Well, there's your problem!

ProTip: Make the corners of the touch screen register as the action button and just rest your finger on the screen when you want to blaze through battle.

Where are these settings?

Science dropped

Thank you for posting those, I think FF7 looks incredible and I don't understand where all the "pre-7 games hold up far better" comes from. To me, sprites have always looked like shit, and they're only looking worse as time goes on. Shit is a strong word I guess, they have their own charm, but some of those screens from 6 are very ugly to me.

I just completed the entire game two months ago, only made it to the temple of the ancients when it first came out. I thought it aged great too, looks good on Vita OLED. Didn't know there was a fast loading option for vita though..

I found it to be a mixed bag. Some elements hold up well, other don't. I think artistically it looks great but but the gameplay lacks a lot of depth.

Playing through it again on Vita and I agree. The game is still absolutely phenomenal, and I think it looks better than ever on the OLED. Haters begone.

To be fair the backgrounds don't look anywhere near that good at the game's normal resolution, unless there's a PC mod or something.

Those backgrounds I believe are true to the retail PC product. They do look extra sharp since they are zoomed out. Zoomed in it does look a little bit worse, but still reallly good imo.

Definitely my favourite FF game. I've replayed it twice, I think it's about time for the next playthrough.

I feel that FF VII has aged better than VIII and most certainly better than IX. The blocky characters I feel are more suited to the rendering resolution than those in VIII and IX. And well, IX has terrible performance issues so I wouldn't even consider it in the running.

Can we talk about FFX? That game did not age very well. I feel sad for the people that are going to play for the first time in HD.

I'm playing through FF7 right now and yes this continues to be the theme of my experience playing the game again. I played the original release on PSX SOOOOOOO long ago. I still remember the first copy of the game I received was scratched and the game would completely fuck up during the flash back of cloud and tifa on the well.

edit:
And that soundtrack... perhaps the best of the series.

Too bad it looks like shit, to the point where it is just distracting this day and age.

At least FF9 has decent character models on top of amazing pre-rendered backgrounds, made up for the PSX's limitations. Enjoying it on my Vita now.

The controls in the field maps are silly since it doesn't have analog support and so they map the directions poorly a lot.

The translation is pretty bad in retrospect. I remember reading an article in a magazine when it was coming out lauding over the quality of it, sporting an interview about it. Yeah turns out its pretty mediocre and sometimes makes no sense at all.

Materia is still cool though!

Last played it maybe 4 or 5 years ago, still amazing. I can't imagine how well this would sell if it was given a very nice HD touch up and sold on PS Store. One of the best games ever made.

Graphics haven't aged well at all, but the game is still a blast to play.

Nowadays I find FFVI fans infinitely more annoying than FFVII fans. The raw bitterness is strong in these ones.

I said gawdayum. Makes me want to replay FF7, FF8 and FF9. I have no time for any of that, though. :P Honestly I'm really impressed that they managed to make such good looking scenery on their first foray into CGI. Backgrounds have definitely aged well.

Worst I ever witnessed would be Wild ARMs 2. Doesn't change the fact that FF7's is terrible and actively detriments player's enjoyment of the game.

The characters are serviceable at best, but they do the job - it actually helps that they're so basic rather than overly texture mapped, they benefit in the same way Mario 64 does when viewed today.

The backgrounds are still gorgeous and drip atmosphere, the game itself holds up as one of the greats, and every time one of these threads pops up it makes me want to go and play it again.

awesome post of awesome

Yep. FF7 > *

Oh, and I've played FF6-current. Still think 7 is better than 6. Don't get why people think Kefka is some amazing villain. He's shittier than Joker int he Adam West Batman show. Anybody that hates on the translation of FF7 and thinks FF6's is any better confuses me.

Vagrant Story aged better. *runs*

I recently bought it (Amazon Warehouse Deals had complete copies of them for around $15), but I've never played it before. I actually plan on playing it once I complete Ys

I still think that FFVIII aged better than FFVII though

To this day I've never understood why people keep bashing this game for its graphic. For the time it was release it was a step up from previous installments and I would rather have a great story/fight system than great graphics. I replayed this game a couple of months ago and it was still fun even after knowing everything. The Don Corneo part was hilarious and his theme is fits so well. I guess that what I can say is its strongest charm. The music fits the occasion extremely well, I can't even play through Red XIII's father scene without tearing up. This is a game that had everything you would want out of a story and one that I would replay over and over.
