I honestly think if we do get a new character it will be a playable Mii with Reggie's Mii being in the spot light.
With Smash being released after the direct.

You think it's possible, not necessarily tomorrow, that they'll actually give Wii U owners a playable Smash Demo?
Probably limit the demo to Fox only, no items, Final Destination.
It was nothing like the new site, so there's no point in comparing the two. Sakurai's doing things differently this time around. There was only one character revealed between May 2006 and June 2007 (Fox), but we've been getting at least one veteran per month since E3.

And I have this feeling that Nintendo (NCL) initiated the reveal of Luigi for "Year of Luigi" as opposed to Sakurai choosing to reveal him.
It was probably their call so Sakurai didn't care to hint to it as he probably just handed over footage and let them reveal it when they wanted to.
My conspiracy theory of the day
Nintendo seems to hate the idea of downloadable demos. They make a ton for kiosks, but it's rare that we get any on the eShop. I'm sure they'll make one, but just for in-store purposes.

Snake's the only returning veteran I think would generate any hype if revealed through a Direct. It's either him or a newcomer, and if it's the latter I'm betting Mii with a dumb tie-in to that Reggie petition thing.
