JPEG doesn't support layers, that's why the formerly transparent parts are now white.
If Toon Link can survive, I'm highly skeptical of any other unique characters getting axed.

Your disc reader might be borked or need cleaning. I had the same problem and had to send it to Nintendo, they replaced it with the new version. I have a disc lens cleaner that worked for a bit but eventually it had to be sent in.

Couldn't have said it better myself. The only character that I can see getting cut at this point is Snake, but not because of time or roster limits.
The roster should hit 50 characters easily. No SSE taking up additional dev time, Namco being brought in to streamline things further, and the character roster being the same for both consoles should go a long way.
Pretty sure my warranty expired already. If I tell them that Super Smash Bros. Brawl broke my Wii, will they give me a free disc reader repair?
Personally expecting 42ish max.

Pretty much. Snake's the only potential cut due to licensing. And Sakurai's not a fan of cutting characters so he'll do what he can to get everyone back. It's partly why I expect Mewtwo and/or Roy to return, since Sakurai must have been aware of the fanbases they had in Smash.

Counting Zelda and sheik separately as well as Zero suit samus and the three pokes with pokemon trainer as individual characters bring the count to 39, if I'm not mistaken.
It's crazy to think of how much of a difference 8 characters would make. I get all excited just seeing 1 new or returning character so imagine those extra 8 being included to hit 50. I really hope it happens even I'm leaning more towards 42 myself.

probably just snake...and to a much lesser extent ike.
A lot of work has already been done if they are in Brawl, I don't see why there would be many cuts.
I don't understand how some people are surprised by Rosalina's addition, even before the Galaxy stage reveal I thought she had pretty good chances of making it and after the Galaxy stage was revealed I thought her addition would be inevitable and I was right. She definitely had WAY more chances than w/e other obscure characters people were expecting to get in.

It mostly helps that she represents a generation of Mario games that Mario himself hasn't been updated to showcase. If not for that she'd be a pretty outlandish choice.
If Konami will allow it, I believe Sakurai will bring Snake back. He is no doubt rightfully proud of his work on that character. And Snake is so unique, both in terms of his character and his gameplay.
Ike seems more vulnerable. They can only add so many blue-haired lords before it starts to feel redundant, and since Chrom is all but an inevitability... Although, Chrom might be more unique than we think -- perhaps he'll be paired with Lucina to pay homage to the pair-based gameplay in Awakening? A father-and-daughter duo... Seems ambitious from a design standpoint, but anything's possible with Sakurai.
If Ike were cut, and if Roy didn't make it for whatever reason, I think it'd be awesome if an Ike/Roy combo pack were made available as DLC. Preferably free -- Nintendo could finally make good on the Wii Connect 24 idea of waking up one morning and finding you have a new Smash Bros. character downloaded.

Maybe a few but not a lot. Maybe Snake and characters that share similar movesets such as Lucas, Ike, & Wolf. I really wish Jigglypuff would get the axe but chances are almost non-existant at this point.
Ridley isn't an obscure character. He's been in more games than Rosalina has.
