Whatever the hell a second party studio exactly is (I believe Rare is a first-party studio, and I definitely know Retro Studios is a first-party studio), I believe HAL is one, just really close.

Well what about characters worth representing? It seems you're completely fixated on series as a whole when you should try and consider both series and characters.
But in the end, all of this discussion is pointless considering it is Sakura's calls and our opinions mean shit to him lol.
Contrary to popular belief, Nintendo doesn't own Intelligent Systems.
Probably that there aren't any unwritten laws on how Sakurai chooses characters and it celebrates Nintendo's history as a whole.
I think sometimes people get more hung up on what series are repped than the characters themselves.

And that's still a lot of characters from 2nd or 3rd parties who were let in anyway.
Why isn't Chibi-Robo! worth representing? It's a fun game that became a modest franchise.

Second party is a term for development studios who are very-closely allied with or owned by Nintendo. It's an informal term and doesn't actually mean anything in legalese. Retro and Rare are considered second party studios.
Sakurai has been pretty predictable and I doubt Roster is gonna be 40+ characters. We already have 19 right now and if there is gonna be retro Nintendo character , its only gonna be one of them.And good portion is gonna be returning characters with maybe one Fire Emblem and Pokemon changed out.
This isn't a celebration , this is marketing man.(Series like Custom Robo , Advance Wars , Golden Sun and etc never had a chance to a rep in the beginning.)
Expect one Retro character being like Little mac or someone else and rest being Newer Nintendo characters.(I am not counting third party characters.)

Nintendo outright bought Retro a few years ago.
Retro and Rare are both first-party studios. Nintendo owns Retro and Microsoft owns Rare. A second-party would be something like Camelot or HAL Laboratory.

Smh, you didn't read the quote from Sakurai did you.
Because they work very closely with Nintendo. They're still independently owned and operated, though. Nintendo's quarterly reports (I think that's what I'm talking about) include a list of all internal studios, and Intelligent Systems is not included.

Being owned by Nintendo outright makes them first party. To be second party they have to be independent, like GameFreak.
We know four newcomers so unless there's a bunch of cuts there will be 40+ easily. Brawl had 35 selectable characters and more if you count stuff like PT as three characters.
I am talking retro characters that don't already have rep in game.Basically newcomers in series that Nintendo don't make games for anymore.Man we haven't seen one old Newcomer yet.
They are apart of what Nintendo is marketing the most and Sakurai is putting it out there with Nintendo's releases.

The only one shown for Brawl during the prerelease period was Pit, who was announced alongside 5 other characters. They'll show up in due time.
I'm not sure Sakurai looked at Nintendo's pipeline when he made his selections.

Your list is pretty safe and then you go an extra mile by adding "probably" in most cases.
But we can be sure that any anime character has no chance and no Kingdom Hearts, maybe Final Fantasy but it will be similar to Snake's case. Geno is not as popular as Sonic, so getting the rights to use him in Smash is not something Sakurai will want to go through. But Sakurai knows how to surprise people and we don't know what is the process to add characters.

Hahaha, you must be new to the Study of Sakurai scene.
You know 2 retros appeared in Melee and 2 more appeared in Brawl? Patterns are stupid but there is a precedent showing that your absolute statements are laughable.
Takamaru, Mach Rider, Sakupon, and Sherif are just as reasonable as the other Retros and more than one is absolutely possible.
Man I am more prepared to be disappointed.Smash is only Nintendo game that I care about right now , I wanted to see characters from their dead franchises. Megaman isn't only dead character out there.
