Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Well..I forgot so I kept looking at stuff. Not like its in any order that I can tell.

I think the crafting UI is a bit crummy. It's too small and the component requirements should be clearly displayed, not needing a cursor hovering over the item in question.

An excellent idea for a password/entry system to a house/storage on a multiplayer server?

Based on SRC from reddit

It'll be a long wait. Devs said they don't even want to concentrate on anything else until the PC version is out of beta.

It's not like Starbound is from engine standpoint very intensive game and they probably did build engine with multiplatform in mind

First of all, that's a bit relative about it not being intensive. The game chugs often on my computer (which can run pretty much any modern game at medium-high with no issues), and slows to a crawl when there's an avalanche; all those physics interactions are not cheap, the worlds are huge and (being entirely modifyable) hold a lot of information, etc.

Second of all, developing an entirely new control system for the game isn't trivial either. Sure, they might just copy Terraria, but even then they have to implement it.

Third, the game itself is far from complete even on PC. They won't start tinkering with the Vita until the PC version is done, and that may well be a year off or more.

I'm as excited as anyone (and probably more than most) for the Vita version of this game, but realistically we should not be setting us up for disappointment or an excruciatingly long wait.

and why do you assume they don't work on it already ? I mean it is confirmed they will bring it to Vita and they made deal with Shahid from Sony. Sure they may be focused on PC version for now but i don't see how they can't hire someone to do porting especially considering it is selling like hotcakes now even in early access.

Vita means more sales for them and i don't see why they should wait if they will have 1.0 version on their hands. Modern games are created very differently now, rendering engine is most of the time separate from game content and this allows for switching platforms without dealing with "porting" whole game just rederer and few bits and pieces.

Just because Minecraft lazy devs can't code for shit and it takes years for them to release content and port their small game it doesn't mean other devs will be doing nothing with hands in their pockets. Retro City Rampage guy alone ported game for 4 different platforms and that game wasn't small.

The game is very CPU instensive. I don't have issues (except for long play throughs) and I only had crashes related to modding but my friend can barely play it on his PC.

They do need to optimize it before it goes to handhelds/consoles.

Oh I expect the server to be all festive now.

tiy: coming in the next update

Well... more festive than before, I think someone made a Christmas Tree before. Looks like we're getting proper Christmas decorations this time.

Wow. Did they have to make multiplayer in this game so difficult? Trying to start a server but it gives me an ass-ton of warnings, then I'm not sure it starts the server at all. I really wouldn't know one way or another.

Forward the port.
Start the server.
Profit?

I had no problems at all with hosting a server.

yeah this was the easiest server hosting next to minecraft

Pretty much the same for me. It was one of the easiest port-forwarding games I've played. It even tells you which port to use on the screen if a client fails to connect.

Just ignore the text in the server window, minimize it, and try to connect.

Finally got a server working (was a dumb mistake on my part.) It's crazy how much fun this game is with multiplayer.

I mean, solo was already fun enough, but multi is like a different game.

I never played multi in Terraria or Minecraft, so this is my first time experiencing this sort of thing, and I love it.

Seems a bit silly for them to be wasting time on a handheld or console version when the definitive version has so much work ahead of it... So I doubt they're actually doing that.

Yeah, pushing updates on multiple systems is gonna chew up too much time, even if it's dead easy due to communication and legal stuff.

It was always planned as a post release thing from the start as stated in the (outdated) FAQ on their website, the fact that they struck the deal to be able to port it to PS4/Vita hasn't changed that.

I'm a little bit late on this one, but I like what I see about this game. How is this Beta?

Starbound is a loot based adventure game right? Would it be fun to play on a macbook air with the air keyboard?

Cheers

So I doubt they're actually doing that.

Shahid announced it at gamescom. They made "deal" or whatever it means.

I didn't really know about it but i typed on twitter shahid and he confirmed it.

Also game looks to be succesful so i have no doubt they could increase team.

As of if Vita "matters" Retro City rampage guy said Vita port was the most succesful

That actually sounds like wishful thinking more than anything else, IMO

*sigh*

Look, a Vita version is coming.

A PS4 version is coming.

Ouya version? HAHA. Not coming. Despite the fact that they got a dev kit as a present (check back earlier in the thread, I posted info that they weren't even considering an Ouya port)

XBOne version? I think they were in talks, but nothing concrete.

Android/iOS versions? They never mentioned anything.

Anything for Nintendo? Not that I'm aware of.

They JUST put out a call on Twitter to hire, ONE more guy for the programming team.

BEST CASE SCENARIO: If we were to assume, that they're working on a port RIGHT NOW, and if we assume that all of a sudden, they release a port as soon as the PC version is OUT OF BETA, we're not going to get ANY ports until the Beta is DONE.

WHEN WILL THE BETA BE DONE? WE HAVE NO IDEA. IT WILL PROBABLY BE A LONG WHILE.

I love this game a lot, and you guys know I can be very passionate about this game, but c'mon, lest we forget, they DID promise us a release of some sort, LAST WINTER. I spent the last friggin year trying to defend this game for it taking so damn long to come out. You can hope and hope that a port of some sort is coming out, no one is going to deny that. But to assume we're going to get it SOON? Do you know how many people we've had come into this thread, hyped up for the game, and as the months wore on, we lost them because they got frustrated because it didn't come out as soon as they wanted?

Keep your expectations low, people. That way, when they're exceeded, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
.
.
.
And with that coffee fueled rant over, I'm going back to Starbound and hunt for some furniture.

Its a great game for sure. But its more of a builder/adventure game than a loot/adventure game. Based on your post I'd wait 6 months till everything is perfectly polished to buy .

Yeah, wait until we have the quest system in place...

I'm quite interested in how modders will develop the questing.

Okay, yeah. I was just confused about the server hosting. Definitely much easier than I thought.

How do you use the
Starmap you get from the UFO after using your Distress Beacon
.

Ok, looks like the Multiplay servers for Starbound are finally available. I'll detail GAF server plans later when I get home, but the basic gist of it is that I'd like to get some sort of donation drive going so that we can buy a year's worth.

I'm also again fielding opinions as to how many people do we want max on the server? Please be aware the more we want, the more expensive it gets.

So, start discussing/debating, I'll deal with it later after work.

Such a fun game and I've much left to see. I'm still gonna put it on the back burner and wait for a (hopefully) final wipe and some more progress.

The scope of what they're discussing is amazing and I actually believe in this team to get it all done properly.

Is there any way to know the max players we have gotten so far simultaneously ?

why does the lowest player count start at 12? that can't be right can it?

It's probably where the lowest cost they were willing to provide due to resources and whatnot overlapped with the $1.80 per slot.

Also, using this referral link: http://starboundservers.com/?r=chucklefriends will get 25% off the order.

Edit: On the referral code, it doesn't stack with subscription period discounts, so you just get the 25% off instead of the default 20% if going for a year's subscription.

I just started to play. I tried to kill the first boss but I had no idea that if you lose you have to build another beacon, damn.

anyway, how do I create guns? Also, what mods should I use?

You can't make guns. At that point in the game you're probably going to have to find an Avian airship to buy one. As you progress you'll start finding guns in chests as well. The boss doesn't really require a gun, though, an iron bow should perform fine.
