Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

If I want to use water for something, I have to find some naturally occurring and then carefully drain it. I'm 100% sure that, like trees, liquid management will be added eventually.

uh, that's quite amazing.
Thanks, it was a ton of work, but it's pretty cool.

Damn. That Pixel Compressor takes its toll.
According to one wiki the (current?) death penalty is 20% of your pixels, which means more than two deaths already lost you more than the pixel compressor penalty (dying three times makes you lose about half your pixels). So in that case, it's worth it.

*edit* 30% sounds more accurate, so that wiki may be wrong.

I think death is 30% and compression is 40%.

Flew to a snow planet. Froze to death almost instantly. How do I protect against the cold other than placing a campfire every few seconds?

Higher quality armors tend to protect more against freezing. You can tell by the number next to the sun icon in the stats. Don't know what numbers you need to stop freezing, but higher is better.

I Don't Want to Miss a Thing's MIDI was found nearly instantaneously, but I spent a good chunk of this hour fruitlessly looking for a MIDI of The Touch. I even hit several pages complaining about the lack of a MIDI for this song. Most of the rest of the time was spent downloading and trying WAV to MIDI conversion programs, with results pretty much as unrecognizable as you'd expect. :/

In its stead, I found a decent MIDI of the Transformers Movie (1986, obviously) intro. I also included two slightly different versions of I Don't Want to Miss a Thing (I removed one instrument on the second to improve note accuracy).

Wow thanks. Yeah too bad about The Touch, but gonna rip on my guitar like aerosmith on an asteroid.

Depends on the exact environment, with a lot of random/"weather" variability. IIRC to survive on meteors you'll need 100-400 points for example.

Is there a quicker way to switch between Tech other than just clicking on the Inventory screen?

Is there a quicker way to switch between Tech other than just clicking on the Inventory screen?

Not yet. They're working on making it so that you don't have to switch, if I recall correctly, instead of a quicker way to switch.

To clarify: right now, they're working on a temporary fix where you can switch between techs with the press of a button.

What they really want to do: They want us to be able to use ALL the techs equipped at the same time. They just need to work out a "override" rule for some techs, because of overlap.

I am now of the assumption that these things are stupidly rare. Can't find them on any starbound site yet.

And they flap when you jump around!

I'm not sure when the eyeguards were added. They may have been part of the new structures in Offended Koala.(correct me if anyone encountered them before that) The wings are like a 4-5% drop from them, so assuming it's a recently added encounter, they'd definitely be rare. Nice find!

Though it's surprising how many sites are lacking information when all of this item info is laid out right in front of them in the files.

Okaaaay... so... here's what I'd like to do about the GAF server...

Game still in BETA, too soon for a crowd server when the game is floating around with regular updates?

Note: I haven't logged into the GAF server yet thou,just messing around with SP

Have the character wipes happened yet?

And what's the point of compressing pixels?

No, a new patch hasn't been released yet. And as far as I'm aware, we don't even know if the next patch will have a wipe. We know there's at least one more wipe guaranteed in the future, but not when it'll happen.

As for compressing pixels, when you die, you lose 30% of your carried pixels. You can compress pixels into voxel items at a loss of 40% of the pixels compressed. These voxels can be refined back into pixels. If you compress 10k pixels, the 10k voxel will refine to 6k pixels. This means that, if you die often, compressing pixels can be a good idea.

My pixel count is generally kept low and if I need more for something, I refine diamond ore or something to get the amount I need.

Where do I find titanium?

Iron = Threat 1/2
Titanium = Threat 3/4
Aegisalt = Threat 5/6
Cerulium = Threat 7/8
Rubium = Threat 9/10

The ores you will find are what are needed for that tier's armor. Iron is in 1 and 2 because those tiers are Iron and Steel.

Boom!

I find titanium even in threat 10 planets. Aegisalt doesn't show up outside of its tier, for example, but titanium is everywhere, but harder to find in tier 3 for sure.

Here's a version of your avi with a transparent bkg:

Where do I find titanium?

Gamma and Delta Sector planets.

Edit: Ninja'd by a quote of my own post! Also you seriously shouldn't be finding titanium on threat 10 planets. These ores are straight up replaced by each other in the oregen config. That is to say, for threat 10, there are no entries for iron, titanium and so on at all.

Really? Maybe I'm losing it, I swear I was finding lots.

You sure you're not thinking Platinum? Because there's a ton of that. But I can guarantee I've never encountered Titanium in X Sector. I've made many special trips to Gamma/Delta to acquire the stuff for durasteel or titanium panels haha.

How can you get a picture like that of your character?

Screenshot and edit the character out.

from the stream earlier.

Kyren | 9:47pm | The next update will wipe your universe and quests, but not characters.
A future update which will include the feature which prevents future wipes will wipe everything.

Yes! I will be sure to join in on the adventure and fun. Woo!

Do we have a specific world that we are turning into a NeoGaf city or is this just free range wandering?

That damn 'q', somehow I seem to have thrown away my platin drill while raiding a birdmen town. Now I'm too poor to craft a new one.

I made a makeshift helmet. Is it good? Also, how do I get more matter blocks?

It slots in between gold and durasteel, but can be made with normal steel. So it's very good if you make it in β, a definite upgrade in γ, and decent in Δ.

You get matter blocks by using the blinking machines in the dungeons patrolled by cyborgs.

I got one, but it won't let me craft -shows me as having "0" in the crafting menu when I've got a bunch in my inventory.

There are rare and common matter blocks. Rare makes the tier 4 Helghast set, common make the tier 3 Dead Space and Doom helmets.

I've been having some fun with this game over the past day. The best part was heading to my second planet and heading into a small cave. I was making my way down in the dark by knocking out the back wall and got into a fight. I ended up jumping into the dark and fell. A lot. Almost killed me. Put some torches up and it turns out I found a huge cavern. Tons of ore in it too. Found a little bit of my first platinum and diamond too. It went down all the way to the lava.

I assume the lava is the bottom of the planet?

Yep. Lava is right at the bottom. You can place dirt in it and then dig that out to find hidden ore, but the hard depth cap is right behind and if you dig all the way down through its 30 or 50 blocks you'll just stick in perma-fall animation on the bottom of the screen.

Oculemon was always plantable, though I never quite figured out how to make it grow beyond a sprout. Hope the update adds that.

Oculemons are fruit and already grow as intended, I've grown them in the past. I think they're in the slowest speed tier for crops, though, so maybe that's why it seemed off to you.

So I'm a newb at games like these. I sucked at Minecraft, I sucked at Terreria....but the appeal of this game and the sci-fi theme is just awesome. So I started my Starbound Newb Adventures where I'm actively just recording my hardships in the hopes of encouraging people to help me figure the games intricacies and not have such a hard time. Unfortunately I already got stuck on the most simplest of things, told you I suck. http://youtu.be/3c_4jxN9V2g
