Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

I actually prefer the old Pikachu and don't really like the way he looks now, he looks so weird skinny and taller. I don't understand the issue of having an opinion like this.

It's perfectly fine to disagree but come on this attitude here...

Oh, don't get me wrong, I don't have any attitude towards this.
I was just pointing out how characters from games, animes, movies and stuff like that go through as time goes by.
Some people think a design refinement tends to be for the better but sometimes that's not the case e.g Pac-Man.
Honestly I think Pikachu's latest design is better because it looks more stylized and less real world looking like (a fat rat) but that's my opinion.

The holdup for Yoshi is strange, but wasn't Yoshi also the last of the "original 8" to be shown for Brawl?
He was, but he was shown like a few weeks (at most, possibly as short as one week) after the other remaining member of the original eight was shown (Donkey Kong).

I said it earlier, but this Yoshi holdout is just silly. He looms over every potential character update as the least exciting announcement they could currently make.

Holding out characters like Captain Falcon and Ness is strange too, but I guess that's how Sakurai wants to go about it this time. We seem to get a new character about once a month.

If Mewtwo makes it in (and even Lucario stays in), I'm betting that their Final Smash will involve the Mega Evolution. Either a straight form change ala Wario/Sonic/Bowser, or a move with the form change ala Ganondorf.

We didn't get a Captain Falcon or Ness reveal for Brawl until after the game was out in Japan, so it's not unheard of. Just weird.

I guess Yoshi could be interesting again if he were dramatically overhauled in some way visually or mechanically, but that's highly unlikely.

I find it funny that people keep forgetting that so many veterans and newcomers weren't revealed till after launch.

I don't think there will be nearly as many hidden characters this time around. It's nice to have a handful, but the proliferation of the Internet over the last decade has rendered the concept of unlockables more or less obsolete. Most people just don't seem to care anymore. Sakurai's already pulled the Internet card with the lack of a cutscene-heavy story mode, so I don't think it's unreasonable that he would feel the same way about hidden characters.

I'm sure there will be tons of hidden songs, stages, and collectibles -- the usual Sakurai fare -- but the amount of hidden characters will be toned down. I'm thinking 12 or so: a few newcomers, Mewtwo, Wolf, Ganondorf, R.O.B., Mr. Game & Watch, and the guest characters.

Marth was the same and now he's a starter.

Fire Emblem never faced all the problems Xenoblade had tho.
the game is only known due to an extremely niche audience and all the noise it made thanks to Operation Rainfall.

If anything, an assistant trophy is the best we can hope for.

I'm expecting playable. Monolith are part of Nintendo now.

I really do hope Sakurai doesn't show all of his cards before launch day.
Same

I'd like it if he kept most of the newcomers secret. One of my favorite things about Melee was that every unlockable was a new character save for two. Brawl, almost every newcomer was there from the start and the unlocks were just the 64/Melee unlock veterans plus lesser newcomers/3rd parties.

I'd be perfectly OK if Rosalina was the last newcomer reveal before launch, haha

I can tell you right now that the game sold nearly 1 million copies.

I remember when unlocking characters used to be a surprise.

The first time I realized I can get Falco and Mewtwo was so amazing. Brawl had everything announced so when you unlocked them all it was underwhelming. This year I may actually go spoiler-free into the game if the full roster gets leaked. I missed that excitement of a new character not known before like in Melee.

I'm getting worried for the state of hidden characters in general - I mean, first there's Luigi, who's the classic Smash unlockable. Then Toon Link, a clone (the least likely sort of character to be a starter). Now Rosalina - if any newcomer should have been hidden, it should be her, being the fifth Mario character.

At this point I'm suspecting there's no unlockable characters, or Sakurai is going to reveal them before release - which for me, at least, is just as bad.

Original Wii Fit sold 22.67 million worldwide.

Perhaps numbers like that are the benchmark for newcomers that were created post-brawl? They would be nice additions but having AT's seems to be the fanservice card here.

Do you guys prefer the hype of these reveal trailers or would you have preferred to be surprised when you unlock a newcomer?
Why not both? Obviously there are going to be a few hidden newcomers like always.

EDIT: Whoops, sorry for the double post.

Give me that surprise! I'm hoping for at least five hidden characters that I can unlock like this.
I'll probably be going on a blackout before the game comes out to avoid spoilers.

I just read an interview with the Summit fish in the latest issue of Battlefield & Stream and he said that Sakurai won't return his calls.

Rosalina reminds me that Nintendo can fill the rest of the new roster with females, both good and evil, to even it out a bit. I would love if these ladies were in:

They all look like they would play different from each other. Imagine all of them with CG intros.

For those interested, here's a list of notable dates within the next month:

December 26 - The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds release (JP)
January 11 - Kirby: Triple Deluxe release (JP)
January 21 - Super Smash Bros. 15th anniversary (JP)
January 30 - Ice Climber 29th anniversary (JP)

Dec 26 - Zelda reveal
Jan 11 - Dedede reveal
Jan 21 - Final Destination, Master Hand or a stage from 64/Melee/Brawl
Jan 30 - Ice Climbers

Has Final Destination been shown in gameplay before release for any previous Smash games?

Eh, adding a female just because they're female isn't what Sakurai should be doing. Don't get me wrong, some of them are likely characters (especially Paluetena) but it's more because of 'merit' as opposed to gender.

Palutena: yes; the others: no. We might get Dixie Kong and/or Toon Zelda, but I don't think any other females are likely. That's still a lot considering all we got in Brawl was Zero Suit Samus.

No Dixie and Krystal?
