Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Suddenly silent thread. I'm guessing everyone is holding their breath for the next patch/wipe? :D (also Christmas).

I'm just monitoring the thread in case someone mentions the server is borked again. :p

Otherwise, I'm just killing time gathering resources and building my homeworld up.

AND STILL LOOKING FOR A STUPID REFRIGERATOR.

If you are on gaftropolis I can sign in and give you one. I have an extra.

*edit: nevermind. For some reason I cannot connect to the server.

Took the server down for a bit, should be back up. There wasnt anything wrong, btw, I just thought that since traffic was slow, I might as well reboot the computer, since chances of the server taking a dump are usually directly proportionate to how long the computer has been on.

And I'll pass on that offer, I'm trying to pretty much find everything I need on my own.... randomly. I just can't believe I have yet to run into a place that has a refridgerator yet, and this has been since two updates ago.

I'm waiting for the next update / wipe, after that I'm gonna be hitting the building projects hard. Skimming through Reddit, I see maybe one or two builds that aren't absolute garbage, which is pretty much what happened with Terraria too.

Stupid question but, before I buy, how is the controller support for this game if there is any at all? Reason I ask is because all I have is a surface Pro and I have it hooked up to my monitor for most of my gaming but would like to use a controller if at all possible instead of putting the surface on my lap tray because I sit in a recliner when play.

Not supported in Beta, but I believe there are plans for the final game to support controllers.

Does anybody know if this game is going to go on sale on steam? Looking to buy but don't know if I should wait for a sale or not. Unless I missed it... O_O

Really dumb questions...

How do I pick up campfires, or crafting tables? Also, should I be building objects in my ship? I have the material for a bed for instance. Should I have made my crafting table + my bed in my ship?

Is my goal to make a house on this first planet? I just started so I'm just going through the very basic missions. I'm just curious about making certain things. Right now I've just been putting them at the beginning of the planet (where I beam down). But it seems strange to have my crafting table and campfire to just be on this hill side.

Just break those things with a pickaxe.

You can make your home whenever you want, but make sure to set the planet you build your home on as "Home" in your ship's nav system, so you can beam down to it regardless of where you're ship is in the galaxy.

Follow up question to Azula's question: Is there a way to change where you spawn on a planet? I always just build my house at the spawn point, but I've found a couple of huge glitch castles on my planet, and I've thought about moving in there.

As of now, sadly no. The devs have posted that they're considering adding the feature though.

I don't think there is. But that would be really cool if they put that in. I'm sick of building a house on my spawnpoint and then finding like a facility or something just a few feet away I'd rather live in.

Thanks for replying. Just needed a little guidance. So..should I just wait and explore different planets before I decide which one to build my home on?

That could be dangerous. It's safer to build a small house and farm on your home planet and use the planet for resources, fuel etc.

Okay cool. I just need to find a good area to do it. Where I beam down, it's this really jagged hill. I guess I could shave out the land and make it more flat. I truly appreciate you guys taking the time to help me. I'm a noob, and all this stuff is kind of overwhelming. But I'm sure I'll get the hang of it all rather quick. Game is quite amazing.

Up to you, my starter planets had ugly brain trees in the background which are too ugly for my sensibilities, so I hopped around until I found a planet that looked kind of natural (it had purple dirt. Purple dirt! So I dug up a small patch of land and replaced it with regular brown dirt). Not only that, but there was an Avian airship near my landing spot which is awesome and I'm gonna incorporate it into my home.

Also explore different planets to your heart's content. If you don't like mining, you can just skim the surface of a planet for minerals then move to another planet and skim its surface.

ALWAYS make sure you are aware of the weather patterns before you build. You don't want to build a nice new house then have a fucking meteor crash into it. The good news is that it just breaks the blocks instead of destroying them.

Been playing this off and on with 3 others, running it locally from my machine. Loved Terraria and this just feels like a logical and ambitious expansion on that. So much fun, with the only real issue being that with 4 people on my machine really starts chugging, and we'll run into problems where the world doesn't update until 5-15 seconds later.

Hope they optimize the heck out of it once they are in the later stages of development!

The hard thing about this is that you don't always see it right away. I was on the starting planet for my server for a couple of days before we got hit by meteors. I didn't even know they were a thing.

The new planet that we moved to, fortunately, seems safe enough.

Been saying for a while, there need to be planetary probes you can send out to gather information about enemies, resources, weather and gravity in precise detail.

That sounds awesome actually. But it would take out a lot of the thrill of adventuring, don't you think?

If it was a mechanic rather than an item, and you could only have a set number of probes out at a time, then I don't think so. All it would do is let you do is skip the 30 second travel time and minimal fuel cost.

Basically as you unlock additional tiers, you'd unlock more probes so you can scout multiple planets at once. The only cost would be the time it takes for them to get there and report, which could take a while to keep it from being overly abused.

Famous last words. :D

If I remember correctly, that's on the roadmap; they even wanted to let you see what kind of structures//dungeons a world might have. While it indeed lessens the surprise a bit, I believe in the end it will improve gameplay, especially when you're looking for something in particular.

Speaking of adverse condition, the current GAFPlanet has poisonous water. Something we might want to avoid when we finally settle down on a server on release. :D

Just got gifted this by a friend (and my daughter got a copy too so we're playing it together on a local server). A bit overwhelmed, and can't seem to find enough coal.

Still, lots of fun :)

10 wood = 1 coal, so just cut some trees, replant them, and gather enough to get out of the system.

Also, travel to planets with a lot of moons and stuff. Travelling within a planet system is 1 fuel, and within the solar system is like 25 fuel or something.

I put things in the 3D scanner but I can never press scan, why?

Just found a robot base, got some good weapons.

I may continue taking a break until the next patch, but meteors are the main thing that scares me about trying any more big building projects. Unless the big project is a base that is quite a bit underground. :p

I'm not sure if this is it, but you may only be able to scan things that have pixel costs. Those are the things you should be able to scan and make yourself.

This is very true, but you also will rarely end up staying on the first planet you land on. There are always more interesting places to go. Me, I prefer arid planets. Especially if they get the rainbow meteor showers. Pretty and harmless.

Can anyone post the co-ordinates & name of the current GAF planet? I'm gonna jump on the server and want make sure I set up on a separate planet.
