Looks like 24 before the Pokemon block with Random, and 24 after. So 54 slots overall, when you include Random.

Mario - Luigi - Bowser
Peach - Rosalina - Bowser Jr.

Link - Zelda - Ganondorf
T. Link - T. Zelda - T. Ganondorf

Donkey Kong - Diddy Kong
Dixie Kong - King K. Rool

Samus - Ridley
Pit - Palutena

Yoshi - Wario

Takamaru - Little Mac

Pikachu - P. Trainer - Jigglypuff
Lucario - Mewtwo - RANDOM

Kirby - Meta Knight - King Dedede
Fox - Falco - Wolf

C. Falcon - Pikmin & Olimar
Ness - Lucas

Marth - Chrom & Lucina
Ike - Roy

Mr. Game & Watch - Ice Climbers - R.O.B
Villager - Wii Fit Trainer - Mii

Sonic - Snake
Mega Man - Pac-Man

The above pretty visual guide inspired me to step my game up with roster making. I have an even crazier separate roster but here's my more conservative roster for now.

47 character slots, 51/52 characters total, 13/14 new characters. A SHITLOAD OF COLORS!!!!

Notes: I don't feel that confident with Shulk anymore since he's a one-off character and another swordsman, Ridley added because he's long overdue/can magically shrink down/another great villain, I think Lucina will still get in as a female Fire Emblem rep, and I keep going back and forth with Wonder Red and Chibi-Robo being playable or being Assist Trophies. Impa and Toon Zelda because the whole Phantom fiasco, and Impa with Sheik moveset would be great anyway as another Legend of Zelda rep who's not Tingle because she's more constant unlike say Ghirahim.

On the subject of character transformations, I believe Zelda and Sheik should stay together as one character. Unlike the Pokemon Trainer, both Zelda transformations are literally the same person with a different outfit and abilities. As for PT, I think they should allow the player to change the Pokemon's location during its switching animation, since it's actually removed from the battlefield for a few seconds.

Nov. 2014 confirmed :P

Also has anyone linked that article where Sakurai was talking about how the balancing is going in the game? It's interesting and it helps to know he's focusing on 4vs4 4 player FFA as well as 1v1 balancing.

So Nintendo is pretty much set on releasing this in 2014.

I approve.

A lot of people on Smashboards seems to think BANDANA DEE out of all characters has a high chance of getting in. What the fuck is that all about? A Waddle Dee is even more generic than Toad.

This game release is the last straw on my "I should get a wii u" ... so I need a release date so I can prepare my savings in apropriate manners !

Well... he WAS the 4th playable character in return to dreamland =P
But I doubt Kibry series will receive a new addition any time soon

Not just those. Toys, plush, etc.

Pikachu is the only one that can be truly considered to be big due to the anime, and even then he was competing with Clefairy.

Lucario and Mewtwo?

You know the ones that got super popular because of the anime movies, which then got everyone to buy their toys merchandise ect.

And the literal sole reason jiggly is even in smash bros.

Alternatively, you could start saving now, so that by the time Super Smash Bros. 4 has a solid release date, you'll be well on your way on being an owner of a shiny Nintendo Wii U console.

Been too busy waiting in 2+ hour queues and walking around in circles for miles, but I assume everyone else is enjoying 'no updates week' so far.

Mewtwo already is notable being "that final Pokemon" in RBY.

Lucario got a movie sure, but normally the popularity will fade. After all, he's not the only Pokemon with a movie. Lucario however is a very good Pokemon, is given to you in a side quest without any hitches, is represented well in Gen IV, and of course, merchandising. He pretty much caught on.

To say that the anime has no influence on Smash Bros. is very incorrect. The voices are pretty clearly taken from it. Jigglypuff's inclusion certainly seems to be hinged on it, and Mewtwo and Lucario's depictions and personalities are very clearly based on their movie depictions (whether or not they were actually chosen to be playable because of them is another thing). Sakurai has mentioned the movies as one of the things he looks to when choosing Pokemon representation.

It's obviously not the be all end all, but it clearly has influence on Smash Bros.

Till this day I can't believe they put Jigglypuff in smash bros. If it was cause she was popular in the anime why didn't they put in Psyduck? To my knowledge wasn't he popular too cause of his "headache" skits.

Sakurai wanted a character that could control similar to Kirby and given its anime popularity at the time Jigglypuff was chosen. Really the main poke that got kinda gipped in 64/Melee was Meowth who is still kinda popular to this day.

He should of stuck with Dedede considering they both suck and puff.I keep forgetting Meowth, he would've been way better than Jigglypuff.

That got nerfed straight to hell.

brawl nerfed a lot of good characters to hell though

i dont see the point of just cutting a unique character away because of a nerf

in speaking of cutting characters... nothing against impa or her supporters but what's the appeal in replacing Shiek with Impa?
