Man I knew the final wipe was on its way but I couldn't hold myself back from going on a total binge on this game and getting to the last sector. It's going to hurt not to have my diamond drill for a while.

If I buy the game from Starbounds website is the key sent right away or is it manually done? Decided I wanted to play it now despite being in the earliest beta phase.
I am not sure how it is done right now but I preordered and got my steam key through humble bundle.

Got this game as a gift last week some time and I've been loving it! It's a lot easier to get into than Terraria and I like not losing everything when I die.I'm so excited to have the game while its in beta and be able to water it grow and get better!
(A shame GAF's servers are down at the moment, I'd have liked to look around a bit.)

I tried Terraria and just couldn't get into it. What are the chances I would enjoy this?

Yes you both have your own ships and can be on different planets
You can do all the normal stuff but with friends just no PvP (yet)
You can just place objets in you ship, can't do nothing with the exterior.
1. Yes.
2. Explore, build, fight together. There will eventually be PvP modes but I think it's still a bit wonky.
3. Right now, you can just place objects and the background wall. Eventually, you'll be able to upgrade your ship's size substantially. There are mods that let you build your ship however you want out now though.
Slim, as it's essentially Terraria with cleaned up mechanics and a lot more content.
Like Retro said, they're similar, so the chances are, you may not like this one if you didn't like Terraria.
That being said, if you are willing to give it a chance, you might want to wait for the beta to actually be over. The fact that there are bugs, and wipes, and other things that turn most people off, would probably work against any possible chance of you liking it.

I hated terraria, but I fucking love Starbound. So much of what made Terraria hard to get into is solved in Starbound.

Well, to be fair I am loosing about 7 musical instruments, tier ten armor and weapons, a shitload of fuel and resources, and my wonderful ship decor.
I am not all that worried about it though. I will most likely be able to find most of my stuff again. And I will trade for the damn pilot goggles if I cant find them myself. I just love them so much.

You can count me in that camp too. I just was never able to get into Terraria. Starbound, on the other hand, clicked almost immediately.
Same here. Starbound conveys its early game progression in a far better way than Terraria ever did. Building is also a lot easier with the manipulator tool. I tried getting into Terraria on about 4-5 different occasions and it never grabbed me on any of them.
Also, Starbound has an amazing soundtrack.

Terraria is fine. I wish every planet was as robust as a single Terraria map when it comes to the underground layers.
Also, Starbound really needs the exploration to find boss fights. Just being able to craft bosses from basic materials isn't very epic. I think they said it's coming.

They have been doing a fair share of character wipes since launch. but theres a patch coming soon this month that will (apparently) be the last wipe. If you can hold out another week or two it would probably be best. That's just my opinion.

My brother bought it for me the day it came out, and I played for like 15 hours or so. Then I stopped. I've been waiting since then to go back to it. I had to buy Terraria on Vita to keep me away from this game lol. I just want to wait until it's a bit more fleshed out and patched up before I get too into it.

All right, tonight's project, I'm going to try and setup the auto-backup thing on this computer.
EDIT: There we go. I have no idea what backup program I was using before for Terraria, but found a different one I can use. No telling if this will actually work, but its set to backup the GAFWorld files every 30 minutes. Note that I AM NOT BACKING UP THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE. The amount of space I'd rack up would be pretty huge, so I'm just backing up whatever planets are in the solar system that GAFWorld is in.

Question about the backup system you're using.
How many backups does it go up to? Cause if gafworld gets borked and the borked one gets backed up we'll just end up at square one.

Nah, I'm doing a differential backup.
The backup program is set to make a backup of the target files, if it detects even the slightest change in any of them, within every 30 minutes. It then takes that backup file and timestamps it and places it in the target folder.
So in other words, if everyone messes with GAFWorld within a period of 3 hours, the program would have made 6 separate, different backups. All timestamped. So as long as someone manages to tell me what time they actually noticed GAFWorld being borked, I can find the appropriate file and reload it (would require a server reboot though).
HOWEVER, I HAVE NO IDEA IF PLOPPING DOWN AN INDIVIDUAL OLD PLANET FILE INTO THE UNIVERSE FOLDER WILL ACTUALLY WORK. We'll find out when GAFWorld gets corrupted again, so keep your fingers crossed.

THIS. The in game music is phenomenal and works very well with the gameplay. My girlfriend loves to read next to me while I'm playing and hear the music in the background while she reads. She says it's soothing yet interesting music.
On the subject of music, check your Humble Bundle download page (a quick way to find it is to just dig up your original pre-order e-mail), the Soundtrack download was updated. The experimental tracks are now cleaned up a bit and a lot of new tracks are added, including the best damn song for living supernova cowboys ever.
This is quite a cool song. I didn't realize they were intended literally to be space cowboys.
It gives me Firefly vibes, which is always a good thing for a game like this where you're skimming around the universe on fumes.
They're apparently such an energetic race that none of them stop to document their history or technological progression, so they never seem to get past steam technology. Obviously the playable Nova kids are the outliers of their species like the rest of the races (Apex resist the Miniknog, Glitch have moved past the middle ages, etc.)
Yes. Music is fantastic. Music in terraria was annoying imo at immidietly i loved that part about starbound.

The Hylotl are supposed to be the most aesthetics-conscious of the bunch.
No, though they've said that they want each race to have techs that are unique to each at launch (though you'll be able to trade them with others eventually).
I was wondering about this since a wiki said humans were supposed to:
Be able to carry extra stuff with the full set of racial armor. But, I wore it all and nothing seemed to happen.
