Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

I think you guys are really underestimating how long this game has been in development, and how much time he's freed up from the single player now that a story mode is no longer included.

I'm pretty optimistic about the game's release date.

At E3, Sakurai said that roster balancing comes towards the end of development; a few days ago, he said the team is "currently working on the character adjustment" and that they're "at a stage where we’d like to release the new title as soon as possible."

I really think the rate of announcements will ramp up in the coming months. December was the busiest month in terms of new reveals (characters, items, and stages) since the game's announcement, and I don't foresee a slowdown.

I agree, I think based on what we've seen, the game could be ready by summer. However even if it is ready by then I bet Nintendo will sit on it until at least September.

This. Also with presumedly no last minute 3rd parties giving their character the ok, I bet things are going according to schedule. Sonic is in, Mega was in from the start no doubt and as long as a Brawl style Sonic inclusion hasn't or won't happen I think things will be completed sooner rather than later.

Pretty good.

December was also Christmas time though. Gotta try and convince people to buy them some WiiUs.
I don't doubt we'll be getting a quicker flow of details, but I don't think it's going to be much faster than December's reveals.

Nintendo needs a big game for November, though. They've had a major release on the Sunday before Thanksgiving every year since the beginning of time:

2013: Super Mario 3D World/Link Between Worlds
2012: Wii U launch
2011: Skyward Sword
2010: Donkey Kong Country Returns
2009: New Super Mario Bros Wii

and so on

While I'd LOVE to see them pull a 2008 again (Kart and Smash like a month apart because who gives a fuuuuuuuuuuuuck we just sold like 5000 billion Wiis), I don't see it happening considering the position they're in. They're going to space those releases out, and Smash is going to fall into that November slot for them. It'll be their big holiday game.

Pre-May isn't happening because Nintendo wouldn't overlap Smash with Kart given how important both are. July never sees releases (at least in US) and I don't see a key strategic title falling in June or August either. I don't think Smash is the key holiday 2014 game either given how far it is along, so that pushes out November and December. Basically my shitty estimates are that, if we're lucky, Smash will release in May. Otherwise it is early Fall in September or October.

Ah good point! I completely forgot Sakurai even said that.

I really love and loath parts of this interview. The part I love is when Sakurai say's

"There have been cases in the past, admittedly, where we didn’t gather sufficient data for certain characters, and that resulted in certain game imbalances. Patches are something we’d definitely like to be able to do, if possible.”

I just want him to say out right Meta Knight controlled him during development.

The part I hate though is that the guy giving the interview asked for a mob of Koopa Kids as a playable character… At least the Nintendo Power guy in 08 brought up playable Ridley directly to his face.

Pretty good.

It is snazzy.

Thanks. You better get ready for their reveal!

What was his reply?

*sigh* The exact quote is…

I think that would probably be pretty impossible. If we had put our best efforts into it, we may have been able to do it. But he might be a little slow. Would that be all right?

Now I know what you may be thinking, and I know for sure what all the super hater naysayers are thinking. But there is more hope in these words than one could possibly imagine! If completely non-combative characters like Villager can be reevaluated then I think Ridley has real chances this time around.

Sakurai needs to take as long as necessary for them to get the online working. I just hope for something decently playable, where deaths aren't frustrating. And if we ever get to a point where we can get pixel-perfect online Smash, I may never need to buy another game again.

As for this one, I'm guessing it's the holiday title for '14.

Sakurai is someone who wants to spend as much time on a game as he is allowed to. I wouldn't be surprised if it came out in December, or November at the earliest.

Namco has a stellar reputation in this department, it's in good hands.

why would someone do this. i want this and it will just disappoint me when it doesn't happen

also i didn't notice Zelda got confirmed and has new moves. nice. SS Impa forever unconfirmed though =(

We could always hope Sakurai gets chummy with some animation studios for Smash shorts like he did for Kid Icarus in the lead to its release.

What do you guys think of my new avatar.

Nice avatar, but if Toon Sheik (who does not exist) makes it in instead of Tetra I will not be a happy bunny.

Ridley and Tetra have been my two most wanted for a decade. With Ridley I can understand the issues. With Tetra, there are none. She even fits the 'new females' thing they're doing at the moment, and is one of the most charismatic characters Nintendo have.

Also, count me in the 'split up transform characters' group. When I want to play as Zelda, I'll pick Zelda. Sheik, I'll pick Sheik. Tetra, I'll pick Tetra. Changing mid-round is so slow and useless that it's rarely worth it. You pick who you think will be a better match-up and stick with them. It's a poor mechanic.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Tetra, but I expect Toon Sheik. The fact that the Phantom got a Twilight Princess redesign to fit vanilla Zelda's moveset indicates to me that Sakurai will do the same with Sheik.

so does people really not expect ridley anymore, he was a shoe in before the pyrosphere comment ever since he is regulated to not going to happen.

There is plenty of support for Ridley here and just as much opposition. We just don't know and he causes controversy like no other character before him. No matter how much the majority view his chances it won't mean a darn thing in the end.

I think he's in personally and like Griss i've been waiting since Melee. It is time…

What's up with all these Toon Zelda posts like she's a guarantee btw? I feel like I've been missing something ever since this started getting talked up so frequently.

What was the exact wording of the pyrosphere comment again?

Just educated guesses based on the Brawl data and the Phantom.

He could be trolling, but if he's not then that doesn't sound good for Ridley.

Eh, you could just as easily interpret that as being a tease for a playable Ridley, though I wouldn't bet on it.

Also, on the whole Toon Zelda matter: While I might be wrong about this, I kinda feel like the characters that were cut from Brawl were cut because they probably felt that they weren't worthwhile additions to the roster (since time was apparently less of an issue with Brawl, considering it was delayed twice), and while they might have went back and re-evaluated their decisions, I still kind of feel that anyone on that list is probably not going to make the cut for SSB4.

how is rildey not playable material? he belongs on the roster as much as bowser and other nintendo characters. He is the second most important character in metroid being samus arch enemy and also highly demanded as playable in the states. The 2 big thing is obv not a prob due to his size in melee.

sakurai quote could refer to 1 of 4 things:

1. a tease that he is playable

2. the way to unlock ridley is by playing on the stage so many times

3. stage hazard

or most likely

4. just a reference that your fight ridley there in other m.

If ridley is a stage hazard it be kind of cruel to tease the ridley player base unless he is just oblivious to his demand in the west.

I just realized how lacking Villager's poster is, since it doesn't match the game he came from (Megaman is a special case - it gives the Capcom feel).

I dunno, the soft rendering style in it seems pretty close in terms of rendering-style to New Leaf's box art, besides having the City Folk version of Villager in it.

I'd love it if Palutena (or somebody else from Uprising) gets in their reveal poster is drawn in the same lovely 2D art that the game's concept art and in-game dialogue scenes were in.

This is just based on what we know of Wii U games in development, but say Smash is the holiday 2014 game. What fills out the release schedule between it and Kart to prevent a drought?

I think of the nebulous "2014" games, Smash looks further along than any of the others and I don't think Nintendo would be stupid enough to let another drought happen if they had no other games to fill in the release schedule.

I'm talking about how the other characters don't seem to meld well with the whole thing, it kinda looks like a Smash 4 poster than "Smash characters being in that game". But that's just me.
