I completely agree with you on MH. No other hunting game has given me anything close to what MH has. It was my main reason for keeping my 3ds as long as I have, and continue to hold on to it for MH4.
SS was indeed fun. Killing the high level bosses was rewarding, but for me nowhere near as great as taking down a King Gold Rathalos or the awesome battle of a full party taking on Jhen Moran...the crafting system in SS was very welcome, but for me there weren't enough mats, so trying to find goblin se++ vs goblin se+ felt like more of a chore than it needed to be. I still sank about 90 hours overall in SS, but that is just the tip of the iceberg in MH time..
All that being said, I am day 1ing Toukiden SO HARD. I haven't seen much gameplay on it, but what I have seen I reeeaaalllly like.
I just wish there was one fight in SS that's as intense as Silver Rathalos + Gold Rathian at the same time fight in G rank. I bought a Wii U for that game and it was the best purchase I made in 2013, moreso than PS4.
Gonna youtube some Toukiden footage and get hype. It should carry me into March when PS4 starts finally getting games.
Great quick breakdown of the two "big dogs". I can't say I have seen enough to make strong statement one way or another on Freedom Wars, but I am interested in that too. My only fears with all the hunting game releases is that the fanbases will be spread thin, and thus might slightly suffer in the long run.
I still wouldn't care. Soul Sacrifice is currently the best "hunting" game as far as I'm concerned. Watching videos of Toukiden, it seems that early gameplay stuff I saw somewhere doesn't really apply to the final product and it looks too slow and boring for me. Hopefully it will appease the MH fans though.
That too bad, you will be missing out a lot =P, SS and Toukiden have some similarity since it a different take on MH genre. SS is an okay game for me, I feel it need a lot of improvement, but after I tried SS delta jp demo, I'm ready to give it a chance again because it is a lot more improve than SS.
isn't this what so many Vita people (especially in this thread) want? more of an MH like experience (instead of unique and actually good games with good combat system and a story like SS or GE)
Though I have the feeling if MH was PSV exclusive instead of 3DS the tone towards the series would be much different ITT. But continue on with your salt showers<3

I'll still say that I don't care about the IP but i'll be happy because it'd mean more sales for the Vita. I found it clunky, and I don't want to spend 20h in a game before it seems minimally rewarding.
Not everyone has played all the games. Give the guy a break. I agree with him. Some of us don't have as much free time and money as the rest of you to play every game out there.
Man, I wasn't being mean, I just pointed that the UI is just like monster hunter. Which is true, but i said after that that he should have post the game name. No need to be defensive.
Btw, I don't have time (neither money) to play every game I want. I may play more if days were longer, but with 24h there are other things that are worth my time too

I saw this demo impression on Kotaku and thought it was interesting:
The demo went fairly smoothly, with the 4 of use taking out 4 Abductors and saving the objective 3 civilians in about 6 minutes. It was a little short, but I got a pretty good feel for the game.P
Maybe it was the nature of the quest that wasn't so much about defeating monsters but about rescuing people and carrying them to extraction points, but the vibe I got from Freedom Wars made the game feel felt less like a game like Monster Hunter or God Eater and closer to something like a capture-the-flag match in Call of Duty. I can see the game's multi-player being a lot of fun depending on how they mix up the game play and customization options.

MAN....It's been too long for me.....Gold Rath *smh* Getting cooked by the felynes would be a fate too nice for such a mistake...
The multi fights in SS are intense, but still lack "that MH feel" for me. I almost did what you did with the WiiU, but I just dealt with a few local friends instead. Worked all right.
I can't remember if what I saw on Freedom Wars was full cinematic or not...but I am definitely hyped for that as well after just watching some gameplay vids.
Luckily SS Delta looks to have much better bosses to fight. There's more than a couple in SS that just leave me scratching my head wondering what the hell they were going for.

Agreed, I want to gouge the fucking bastard who thought Gemini Illecibra is a great idea nad put it into the game.
Who's your favorite archfriend at the moment?
Here is a shot of some remote play from my Vita. Guess what the game is! ( i am playing campaign). Also, does anyone know what the best vita grips are? my hands fall asleep during long vita sessions.

MH is very far from being an appealing game for a very wide audience, only in Japan it has a very big success.
About the tone of some vitabros maybe it's true but we don't have the proof, while i can assure you that the same DS fanboys(of another forum i used to post to before neogaf) that used to despise MH, console like games etc(obviously because they were possible on the PSP and not on the DS) now they are adoring Monster Hunter, Resident Evil Revelations, n64 ports/remakes etc like their new gods forgetting, negating or distorting what they said before.
As for me i tried Monster Hunter Freedom 1 & 2 on PSP when MH was still a PSP exclusive and i didn't see what's good about it(i still don't see it TBH).
It's not bad. It's not the absolute horror LEGO LOTR is on the handheld. It's still a 3DS port, but the controls are snappy and it looks decent enough. If your son is into Chima then it's a safe bet if its cheap.

Faster is good. What I really want is combat that feels more like... the Souls games or even an action game (not a musou though). If you're going to limit me to one of 5 weapons, they should have a metric ton of combos I can use with dodge evade. Hunting games seem to be, in parts at least, a boss rush game. Go target huge creature/boss <whatever> and figure out how to dodge its attacks and destroy it. Possibly with friends who are playing various styles of characters as well.
FLUID ACTION! THAT'S WHAT I WANT! IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?!
Does Toukiden do like MH where you only have one type of weapon with you in the field?
I think that is one main thing that I dislike about SS, GE, FW. Yes, those games allow you to do more solo, no doubts there. But I really like the role positions in MH games.
Could be that I used the GS, bow, and HH a lot....always had tons of fun with those

But yes, I would like that style of combat in a boss hunting game. The depth of it, at least, if you limit my weapons. Soul Sacrifice has been the best hunting game for me, partially because of the fact that there are so many type of offering and that I can mix and match to create what works for me on a particular boss.

All this MH talk made me realise how much I miss playing it since selling my Wii U. Went ahead an downloaded Freedom Unite. Apart from some weird pattern on the screen sometimes it seems to have upscaled really well. Can't wait to sink time into this. Still wish Portable 3rd had made it over here...
Hrrmmmm... I don't know if I buy that. Combat in Toukiden looks a lot more varied and interesting than any MH game I've ever seen -- and since my main problem with MH was the boring/limited combat, I think I would give Toukiden a fair shot if they bring the demo stateside before launch.
Eh? I find it quite as monotonous, unless you're counting those ultimate things and using (attack) spirit skills. Mitama System gives you a fair amount of variety, it can change your play. Though some types have better affinity with certain weapons than others.
Best thing I like about it is that I don't have to look fugly to get my desired skills. >___>
Now, if only they allow me to use a miko costume (flowing long skirt pls) in Toukiden 2, I'd kill for it.
isn't this what so many Vita people (especially in this thread) want? more of an MH like experience (instead of unique and actually good games with good combat system and a story like SS or GE)
MH fans, yes. Probably quite a lot of people here are, since I see MH getting mentioned quite often.
I like MH but never a fan of it. It's a very polished series in its subgenre, but it has quite a number of things that irritate me that I only play it with friends now. But almost noone plays it anymore, so there's little reason for me to go back to it.
Not to mention many MH communities out there have been largely elitist, so that's a huge turn off, too.
If you ask me, I'll go with no MH as long as they keep giving me GE.
Killing a boss will take more time than SS, as you must first cut the boss's limb (this is where you gather material) before you can really damage the boss.
Needs better animation. While people are looking at it only as a hunting game, I'd like to believe that certain information pieced together says it ain't one. The "regions" seems like it's more-general coop game.
Though so far, rescue & "withraw" are the only one shown in gameplay.

Yes, only one weapon. But your role is dictatedguided more by your Mitama type.
I haven't played SS more than the demo, but isn't the attacks there basically just 6 types (+ charged ones) of your choosing? Does the Mole Claw + melee weapon or Falcon Wings + melee combo magics from Delta also exist in vanilla?
It's the one reason why GE stands above the rest for me. It's just so awesome being able to take a break from your melee weapon.
It also feels so good on those moments when you charged/saved up 1100 Oracle Points and Aragami Bullets from one enemy, and unleash them all on the second aragami (assuming they haven't ganged up on you yet lol).
l;kasjdf;lkajsdlf I have 99.8% map completion on Ys: MoC. It's driving me mad. I've gone through what feels like every area, sticking to the sides and going all around, and I can't get the last .2%. I'm just about to enter
the Temple of the Sun
. I think that must be the last dungeon, and I'm out of options. Damnit. Love the game, though. It's nice that I'm grinding skill levels as I'm going around, so it doesn't feel like a tremendous waste of time. I need to max the skills, anyway. But it's just frustrating. I don't know where else to go.

So it was a toss up between the 3ds or the Vita. It seems that I can get a better deal on a Vita then I can a 3ds so thats where I'm leaning too.
I'm still on the fence, but what all can the Vita do exactly? I know it sounds like a stupid question and even as I read various forums I'm still a bit unsure. Guess I just need that extra push.
I really a big JRPG guy, and I know the 3ds seems to be getting them, but with psn+ and ps1 classics it just seems to be a better choice.

This so much. If a game is based on battles against huge bosses, I want the battle mechanics to be fun, to have a choice (the faster the better) that fits my playstyle and with a decent learning curve. And I want boss battles to be well designed.
I don't want to spend 20h in a game before it gets minimally rewarding. Soul Sac does this well (it has a good learning curve). Spelunky does this well (you die a lot, but you feel you're learning something each time you die). In Monster Hunter I feel I need to overcome a clunky and unpolished battle design before trying to learn how to fight each boss properly.
It really surprise me how a game with a shitty learning curve like Monster Hunter is one of the 3 most popular IPs in Japan. Not saying the game is bad, but it's not a game casuals would like.

On the multimedia front, it has local media playback (along with custom soundtracks on ~90% of games), Netflix, YouTube, and Sony's Music Unlimited subscription service.
With regards to functionality, every vita game has trophies, and the system supports Party chat with up to eight people, where you can all be doing your own thing but be in a voice chat together, messaging as well as group messaging, a 2000 friends list limit, an activity list for each game - where you can see when your friends did certain activities and got trophies and what not, and you can comment and "like" the activity posts, you can start a download queue and be doing whatever you want while your games and stuff download - this is a huge advantage over 3DS where if you download something you have to stay on the download screen and ONLY that screen until it finishes downloading if you want it now, and probably other things I can't think of.
It's store has many great PS1 Classics, PSP games, and of course, native Vita games. The store is organized really well, and PS+ is indeed a great value. If you want to game on a budget, the Vita is the far better choice, as Sony's games actually go down in price, and PS+ gives you great games to play every month.
I dunno if this is a glitch or what, but this totally baffled me when I got my Vita for Christmas.
The solution, unbelievably, is to UNtick the option to use wifi when in sleep mode! I don't know if it's worded weirdly, or it's just a lazy oversight, but since I unchecked that option, my downloads work fine!
Yeah it's worded weirdly. "Power-saving mode" doesn't mean the Vita's sleep mode, but rather the operational mode for the wi-fi function itself: "power-save mode" (checked) vs. "full-power mode" (unchecked)
In SS Delta demo, you can cast support skills without having to withdraw melee magics. If you have certain support magics active and use melee weapons (while running), then your attack will change.
Mole Claw + Spear = Attack that jumps from under ground and leaves you in mid-air (to continue your spear combo).
It was a good way to poke Snow White's huge face with melee.
There's a lot of stuff in SS (and Delta) that makes me wish that this game isn't gross. LOL.
I'm not the best at RPGs yet I was in the same boat as you when I fell in love with Persona 4 Golden. It has an easy mode, grinding is not as tedious due to a fast forward system, and the story isn't as cliched as most modern jrpgs, though it is still rooted in anime.
It has led me to try out the final fantasy series along with other jrpgs
If action RPG is what you're into, look into Ys7 and Ys Oath.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. P4G's only $27 for physical locally (compared with $55 on PSN), which is cheap enough for me to justify a leap of faith.
I platinum'd the game and thought it was really fun. The voice acting in some regards (mostly Laval, the main character) can get annoying... but for a kid it should be fine. And honestly, but the end I was used to it.
Visually, the pre-rendered cutscenes look great. The game itself looks serviceable, though the character mouths are pixely and ugly. Otherwise I didn't have a problem with the graphics.
Easy platinum.
Out of the two LEGO games I've played (this and Harry Potter 5-7 Years), it's the best. And based on what I've seen of others (Marvel looks like a mobile game, while Batman seems to have the same cutscenes looking like ass problem like HP)
If you want, I'll transfer it back to my Vita and take a few screens.

Monster Hunter has all of those things. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it doesn't. And it certainly does not take 20 hours to get into or become rewarding, that's just silly.
It has some of the best designed monsters I've fought in a game. Fighting them means I get better every time and learn their movements and weakenesses so it's easier to overcome them next time. It is never a grind for levels or stats to beat them because it's all about you the player getting better.
And while you may disagree I, and obviously a very large amount of other people, love the battle mechanics and would change very little about them. Clunky is the point. The game is about animation priority and sticking to the choices you make instead of just mashing buttons quickly. It's far more interesting and rewarding.
There is loads of choice to fit peoples' play styles as well. With a variety of weapons that play nothing like each other. I mained switch axe and even changing to a long sword was a totally different experience, let alone the hunting horn of bowguns.
I'm a "casual". In fact, Monster Hunter got me back into gaming after I had not touched a game for years. I love it, let's not generalise here.
You don't get Monster Hunter or enjoy it, but that doesn't mean other people only like it because of social pressure, and it doesn't mean you can just ignore all the merits of the game and the things that make it popular in the first place.
