Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

Something akin to this is how he should be represented. This image is also taken from Wreck-It Ralph which is a high budget Disney movie, where coincidentally the classic arcade style Pac-Man was chosen over the modern Pac-Man because classic Pac-Man resonates with the audience more. If Namco didn't have a problem here I doubt they would with Smash, especially because arcade Pac-Man would probably be the style Sakurai would choose based on the IGN interview.

That looks horrible and I would hate it to be in smash.

Anywho, as far as that goes a couple of things.

1) Namco may feel differently about that than they do, well smash bros. Or other crossoever games they have done
Apparently management of a brand can change due to situation and over time.

" hey we wanna use old pacman for this bit in a video game movie, "
" yeah sure whatever"

" hey we wanna use pacman for a crossoever fighting game"
" Oh you mean the medium in which we operate? Use the new one"

Not saying you are definitively wrong or i am definitely right, but don't take the Smash It Steve version of a character as that version of the character. Bust it Bill is a different medium from smash bros and different people are behind it. And probably had little to do with each other. Remember Zengief was in the badguy section, zengief hasn't been a bad guy in a long time. Capcom let them use it for a gag, however capcom might want some other use of zengeif in a more video game medium related thing. Just because one character is used in one way in one thing does not mean that carries over.

2) PacMan latest game featuring modern pacman came out after that picture of yours.
So yeah.

3) While not blue eyed, a Limbed version of pacman was already in a nintendo game.

4) him having limbs does not eliminate the possibly of him doing classic pacman things, nor do punches and kicks. Many characters in smash bros have move set tacked on because they lack these things in game.

So yeah those obvious things.

I reeeeeeeeeeallly want to see something Mother/Earthbound-related soon, whether it's a stage, just Ness, or whatever.

(Actually playing EarthBound for the first time this year made me more hyped for its representation in Smash than I ever could have thought.)
Onett must return.

SFxT Pac-Man is the way it is because Ono and crew wanted the mascot characters (Mega Man and Pac-Man) in the game but not in their original forms as sort of jokes. Hence bad box art Mega Man and Pac-Man riding a Mokujin mech, it was never supposed to be traditional/classic representations and it shows. Also I'd argue that Pac-Man's cameo in a movie would be a much greater deal to Namco than how he would be portrayed in Smash Bros. given the former is reaching a far wider audience than the latter. Finally, Sakurai has stated before that he is in no way obligated to put a Namco-Bandai character in the game even though they are helping with development, if he doesn't like what direction Pac-Man is going in then he won't include him in the game. Not saying that he might have a problem with modern Pac-Man, but I doubt Namco would strong arm him in this scenario.

Slightly offtopic.

A few hours ago in the Awesome Games Done Quick they made a Banjo Kazooie speedrun and in the end of it, Grant Kirkhope (the composer of the game) called them in skype

Thanks for the heads-up, that's pretty cool =) Personally though, I don't get the same feeling watching a Twitch stream of a speedrun as I would digging up my old N64 and praying that it'll work as I blow the dust off the cartridge and then taking my time going through the game.

Won't expect anything new, but totally took those screens for granted. Gonna be good to get back into the groove of waiting for the miiverse posts.

IRRC Video games are i believe the highest grossing medium on the entire planet. Also while I liked wreck it raph, there are PLENTY of throw away CG movies.Someone asking to feature pacman in a film, while flattering probably doesn't really mean much. Epically considering pacman in the movie is more a favor to the movie people than to namco. I don't think it meant much of anything, besides the flattery part. You putting movies way to high on a platform bruh.

1) I don't think sonic was doing so hot during brawl.

2) As I said before , why would him looking modern ever eliminate classic pacman stuff being added to his moveset?

Then click on the stream and listen like a podcast. It is like an interview =D

Your not getting my point. Much more people will have watched Wreck-It Ralph than played the newest Smash Bros. should Pac-Man be in it, because movies typically appeal to people of all ages unlike the gaming medium. In other words, more eyes would be directed at a movie appearance rather than one in a video game, and if Pac-Man's modern appearance is such a big deal then you can bet Namco would be far more concerned with the cameo in the movie than a Smash appearance.

I don't have any I'll will towards modern Pac-Man, but I'd rather see the classic one because it'd force the character to be built around classic mechanics rather than punches and kicks. As for what I said about Pac-Man's direction, I was talking about if Sakurai didn't like where the character was headed while planning a moveset for Smash, rather than what he thinks of modern games.

Aaah, the wait...

I actually don't really know what the picture will be. I assume it'll be of Zelda, though.

Sakurai appeared to me in my tea leaves!! He spoke to me and revealed all of the secrets of tonight's picture. In summary, the picture is
f*ing nuthin'
. He then laughed "Wawawawawa!" and disappeared. =/

1) as previously stated, his most modern update happened a year after Crash it Carl. Along with that TV show.

2) and smash bros is a game where the focus would be on these characters rather than, something you have specifically forgotten, Tear it tim, and Sara silverman. Who were the focus of that movie. A game that focuses on the characters like pacman. Might be opportunity to magnify focus on their newest version of pacman because people get to interact with pacman.

At first I was completely against Pac-man showing up in this game, but seeing these newcomers (especially RosaLuma) I've warmed up to the idea. If they make his moveset unique enough then I'm down.

classic pac-man has the potential to be a great WTF character for Smash 4.

Basically my thoughts. Surface level wise, Pac-Man just seems like one of the most boring 3rd party characters you could pick and serves as little other than as a recognizable mascot in a game already full of them. However, if they took classic Pac-Man and had him really evoke eating and chasing things, he could make a great Mr. Game & Watch style "WTF" character which would be very interesting to play as while at the same time being nostalgic.

wait how can anyone actually hate pacman?

hate is a strong word!

I know it is, and I don't use it often, but in this case I must. =( I can't honestly remember any other Pac-Man game other than the original and variations of it (Championship Edition, etc.) that I thought was remotely enjoyable. Yet he kept showing up, always Wakawakaing his way back into semi-obscurity. I couldn't stand it. The best comparison I can make is that he's an overused meme that was never funny to begn with. I don't want that rotten peanut butter getting near my Smash chocolate.

EDIT: Remi Gaillard is the only time I've heartily enjoyed Pac-Man =p

Was watching the awesome The Smash Brothers documentary with a friend and we were wondering if there's any meaning to the Smash Bros logo? You know, the ball with the two lines intersecting.

It's to represent the crossing over of different franchises. That's also why the last game was called Dairantou Smash Brothers X in Japan, the X symbolizes the same thing.

This picture better be worth it. I've been sick all weekend and should be sleep. I don't stay up for just anything.
