Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

I'm still not convinced of the arena's origin as a Punch-Out stage. Every other stage that has been shown so far (save this one that is likely a part of a single player mode and not a normal stage) has had its origin been immediately obvious, by either designed to be instantly recognizable or just flat out using uprezzed assets from the source. The arena's supposed connections to Punch-Out are a lot more tenuous (and many of the cited examples aren't exactly Punch-Out specific).

It just seems strange to me that they would design such an unspecific stage for Punch-Out, especially when it just had a major console release a few years ago to pull designs more closely from as has been the case for all other stages so far.

I don't know, there's just this feeling in the back of my mind that keeps telling me it's a generic Smash Bros. stage. Which, if that were the case, would be pretty bad news for Little Mac.

"Smash Circuit" is a dead giveaway.

I'm of the belief that it was originally the team's intention to reveal Little Mac at E3 alongside Villager, but they decided against it for whatever reason. As a result, part of the cinematic they used for Villager used Little Mac's stage and they decided to just keep using the stage and just not say it was from Punch-Out!!

I mean, notice how in the trailer we don't even see who hits Mario back to the ropes in CGI. That could have easily been Little Mac originally, but they used the power of editing to make it Bowser instead.

Why waste time on a Punch Out stage without Little Mac? At least with the other characterless stages there was more to do in the stage.

If the boxing ring stage really is a Punch-Out!! stage, Sakurai is really trying to hide or downplay that fact. Assuming it is supposed to be a Punch-Out!! stage, it's odd that it doesn't use assets ripped straight out of Punch-Out!! Wii like every other stage does for the respective games except Battlefield and Dr. Wily's Castle (for obvious reasons). And why is it decked out with Smash Bros. logos instead of Punch-Out!! stuff? Whatever the case, I'm anticipating Little Mac as a playable character. It'll be interesting to see how that plays out.

[ where is the diddy kong racing rep nintendo ]

I love how more than half of the characters had games planed when it was released

....and they all got canceled or drasticaly changed

edit: aparently they were more urban legends than I imagined.
I was sure that I saw a Timber game in random Unseen 64

Because you can add a bunch of the opponents from the series to appear as hazards in the stage by using abilities similar to their attack patterns in the games.

Which I'm certain will happen and we just haven't seen it yet, otherwise the stage truly is pointless. There's enough going on in the stage that pays tribute to Punch-Out on Wii that I'm certain it's not just a coincidental boxing ring stage (because what would be the point of that?) and now that we know there's enough gimmicks going on in it that it can't be a Final Destination it surely has to be something else.

Little Mac's a toss-up though and I could go either way on him appearing or just showing up in his own stage. I'd actually be more interested in seeing one of the recurring characters be playable over Mac.

I was actually going to query you on that because Nintendo era Rareware is something I have an encyclopedic knowledge of.

While it being a Punch-Out stage means nothing for Little Mac being in or not, I feel pretty strongly that if it isn't a Punch-Out stage, then he's flat out not in. Like, I really doubt they would include Little Mac and then make a generic boxing ring stage that was not intended to be a Punch-Out boxing ring.

Like someone said earlier, if it is a Punch-Out stage, then they're doing a pretty good job of hiding it. But at the same time, Sakurai has been pretty quiet on the stage--this is one of the first updates where's he's spoken about the stage itself and he didn't mention what it is at all. But maybe it is a generic stage and Sakurai considers it obvious? But then wouldn't he want to showcase it by saying something about there being a new generic Smash Bros. stage when we haven't had a new one since Melee made Battlefield and Final Destination useable?

I really can't decide on this one.

The boxing ring could just be an amalgamation of many ideas from the Punch Out series in similar fashion to Castle Siege and Fire Emblem. We're just going to have to wait and see. Sakurai has been coy about this stage -- so far as to not having any music play on that stage in the E3 Developer Direct in contrast to every other stage demonstrated-- so until we know more, it's all just a shot in the dark.

He's definitely having a lot of fun with these showing us all these mini-mysteries this time around and then not revealing anything about it until he's good and ready. We had Kirby teasing the Galaxy stage, He Fit Trainer, Ridley and the Pyrosphere, the Phantom and probably more I can't remember all in addition to the boxing ring.

I wouldn't dismiss or assume anything until he's confirmed it, because all these things could really go either way.

If there's going to be a Pilotwings character it'd be one of the pilots from the N64 game.

Just put Hawk in there and make him a Zangief-like grappler. He even has a mecha version too, just like the Russian!

sakurai has bar none, giving the least bit of information about the punch-out stage, atleast the one shown in the trailer, he hasent given a singular screenshot of it, talked about it the least, and hasent showed it off much at all, finding out we can jump on the ropes is probably the most info we got of it since E3

Smash 4 will be the first Smash game with more than two Smash Universe stages and all the similarities the ring stage shares with another franchise is just a big ol' coincidence. Hmmm.

If the boxing ring level was a generic Smash Bros stage like Battlefield and Final Destination... then I wonder why it hasn't been shown in the 3DS version yet?

I think it's likely it's actually franchise-specific.
