Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

It'd be nice if Yoshi's up-B got changed so it wasn't as useless, if nothing else. Barely counts as a recovery and I always felt making it work more like Yoshi's Island/Story's egg-throwing system does would be faster and make them more a viable character in Smash.

No, Egg Roll is the useless move. Egg Toss was a fantastic move in Brawl, and I hope it remains as such in Smash 4 (same with Egg Lay).

Egg Roll, however, needs to go. I don't care what replaces it, but it's by far one of the worst moves in the series.

Actually, make Yoshi's side-B that egg launcher thing from Yoshi's Story instead. There, now he has a legitimate recovery move and not a sucky move that 1) you'll never hit people with, and 2) puts Yoshi in a freefall state for no reason.

I slept so so horribly, ugh.

What was up with the avatar discussion? I'm supposed to decide things?
You're supposed to think for us, yes.

I honestly don't remember the egg toss ever being a particuarly useful move in Brawl, so you're probably going to have to explain what makes it stand out there and not as much in the first game or Melee. Though to be honest I think Yoshi normally winds up near the bottom for me personally in Smash, so I'm probably speaking from a bit of a biased perspective here.

Wow, I never saw a side shot of Toon Link before. I knew his head was huge but DAYUM.
The size difference between the different characters' heads really bothers me for unknown reasons.

Like Peach and Rosalina for example. It physically upsets me and I have no idea why.

Here's my suggestion:

I've been doing an alternative pose/image for nearly every character revealed. (just not for assists) Maybe the people on the initial list can just get the avatar I make, regardless of activity. But people can call dibs on the alt/second version on the condition that they're active posters around the time the char gets shown?

That's what I'd do.

Captain Falcon will be getting the HD treatment so will end up sporting a five o'clock shadow since that's the trend for muscly men in videogames. Also his outfit will be stupidly shiny.

That would be fantastic. I loved her Skyward Sword design.

Yup! I absolutely adore this design

Haha, thought that was a photoshop. Very nice, subtle pic of the day. I mean, it's probably just further confirmed bad news. Still kinda cool. I guess maybe it's nothing, but it looks like some sort of solid object. Maybe another enemy. Actually that left part doesn't really look like anything on Ridley. Too small to be a tail, too isolated to be one finger/claw. I dunno.

*inb4 it's a red herring*

I really hope it's just sparks or some effect, but it seems too much of a coincidence that, whatever that is, would stand exactly on the door's ledge.

It could possibly be one of several different bright purple enemies from Other M, but it'd seem weird to refer to them as 'an enemy from Samus past' so many months ago.

I think it's best to assume it's Ridley and be pleasantly surprised if it's not. Probably why I'm not as bothered as I was back when Ridley wasn't in Brawl atm due to Sakurai shooting down my hopes and dreams of inflicting PTSD's on Luigi nearly half a year ago (beyond god awful jet lag from a 24 hour flight yesterday impacting my thinking process).

I wonder if Sakurai knows how deeply people dig into the smallest of things.

If he does, I bet he enjoys it immensely.
Sakurai snuck a picture of his cat into Brawl's default pokemon stage you could only ever possibly find if you hacked the game's camera or went through its texture files because it's beyond an angle the default camera can reach.

He absolutely knows people love getting obsessive with this shit.

Didn't know about that, and that's incredibly awesome.

At least he knows how to have fun by making the fanbase work.

With the amount of teases he drops in the daily images and then dropping potential bombs like Phantom on Zelda you can be certain he takes a disgusting amount of pleasure in it.

Personally I like how the alternative sprites are first come first serve.

I found a fake rumor for someone to add it to tumblr,

Now I know what youre thinking. Im a fake like all the others. Well, Im not. Im an actual developer of Namco-Bandai working on SSB4. I know the entire roster Sakurai has planned. Here are the characters planned:

Mario/Yoshi/Wario series: Nothing new except Rosalina.

DK series: Dixie and Kiddy are a newcomer tag-team, who act like a combo of the Ice Climbers and Zelda/Sheik. They are a transformation character, but the character not being used attacks as a CPU.

Zelda series: There will be a newcomer, Midna. She rides on Wolf Link, and is very unique because of the mount. Actully, she was the only reason Sakurai chose the Twilight Princess designs over the SS ones!

Metroid, Kid Icarus, Kirby, F-Zero and Pikmin series: Nothing new here.

Star Fox series: Fox and Falco. Wolf was cut.

Pokémon series: Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Lucario, Mewtwo, Blaziken. Pokémon Trainer was cut. Blaziken borrows moves from Infernape and Emboar, like Heat Crash.

Fire Emblem series: Marth, Roy and Tharja. Ike was cut. Roy was chosen as a fan-favorite, but sadly, he has a moveset ported from Melee, meaning he will be a clone. Tharja will be very unique, and was chosen to be different from Marth and Roy.

Earthbound series: Just Ness.

Retro series: 2 newcomers: Muddy Mole and Duck Hunt Dog. Muddy Moles digging ability is implemented into his move set and, I must say, is very fun to play around with. Duck Hunt Dog is also very interesting in that you can target people with the joystick and shoot them from the 4th wall.

Other series: The Little Mac/Pac-Man/Mii rumor is true. Miis have a customizable moveset, although is is balanced out very well in my opinion. Little Mac has a very unique gimmick of Star Collection as well, where he can get stars by dealing damage. Those stars improve his Neutral and Up Special's power. Snake's been cut as well.

Assist Trophies: All the assist trophies from Brawl return, except Gray Fox. In addition, there is a new Kid Icarus assist trophie, the Eggplant Wizard. Many other trophies are added as well.

There are also bosses only on the Wii U version that a 5th player can control with the Gamepad. The bosses include Hydreigon, Yin-Yarn, King Boo, Dr. Kawashima, and of course Yellow Devil. In the adventure mode on both versions, before fighting Master Hand, you fight the new Fighting Android Crew, which are 4 robots that can transform into random fighters at will. On the 3DS, instead of the boss battles, Target Smash will return and will be like Melee's, but with only 1 level per franchise.

So, that's about all I know, but I might know any answers to questions you ask in the comments! Feel free to ask anything you want, but I still might not know it. Peace out!

Doesn't mean Sakurai doesn't & the tag team idea is something a bit different from IC or Z/S
He's the absolute definition of a forgettable, one-off character literally nearly nobody likes though, and Tanabe still worked pretty closely with Rare on all of their DK games. Seems telling he can't even remember who Kiddy is but could still remember Lanky/Swanky/Candy/Stanley/etc. He's not even a 'people love to hate him' style character like Tingle or arguably Waluigi, he's just... There. In the least popular DKC game and nowhere else.

The tag-team idea is far more likely to come back with Diddy being reworked to have Dixie in his moveset like was planned for Brawl, and even then I personally don't think that's too likely.

I really don't see Pokemon Trainer being cut. Cutting him is removing 3 whole unique characters from the game.

There's also no good reason to remove Lucas, Ike or Wolf. The latter two are unique characters, which seem entirely pointless to cut in a game where Toon Link is returning.

So, extremely inconsequential prediction here, but I've been doing a lot of research on the Famicom Disk System lately and came across this game called Shin Onigashima, AKA "The Game the Donbe & Hikari Trophy from Melee Was From".

This game apparently has a lot of love from Japanese developers, appearing in Kirby's Dreamland 3, Daigasso Band Brothers, and Captain Rainbow, but more notably in Melee with the trophy and in Brawl with an awesome remix of some of the music on the Ice Climbers stage.

So, in short, I'm thinking, especially if we're getting a higher ratio of Assist Trophy : Characters than the kind of pitiful one in Brawl, a Donbe & Hikari AT would be a really good way to represent the Disk System, which was a very major part of Nintendo's history in Japan despite never making it to America (however, its biggest exclusives did get NES downports, the titles of which might surprise you: Metroid, Kid Icarus, and yes, even The Legend of Zelda were exclusive to the Disk System in Japan).
Hell, I wouldn't necessarily count the pair out as our WTF throwback character
.
