Anyone else detect a hint of classic Lovecraft in the character of Rust? He doesn't sleep; he dreams (Cthulhu); he sustains his fragile sanity by consuming alcohol and narcotics similar to many of Lovecraft's protagonists (e.g., Dagon); he possesses a morbid, cynical perspective of life - almost like a post traumatic stress syndrome - like many of Lovecraft's characters after witnessing a horrific event. He is questioned, mocked by peers who don't see the same things he sees, again like some of Lovecraft's characters.
One of the reviews mentioned the same thing. Good pick up.
dat opening credits

anyway, great start to the series, looking forward to 9 more hours!
Only seven more hours, unfortunately. But at least that'll keep the story tight.

forgive me if this has been answered already but whats the song that plays at the end of the episode? you can hear the beginnings of it in the clip that cornballer just posted.

HBO knocks it out of the park once again.

Why can't HBO just put every episode on HBO GO :( The worst part about started a fantastic series like this is the dreaded fucking week-week. I hope i live long enough to experience a world where everything releases like netflix.

I'm gonna watch the premiere later today. Was just skimming this thread for impressions, and this post actually got me really excited.

Of course this show won't turn into Lovecraft, but it's still a neat way to see it.

Wonderful opening.

Also, manliest slap ever:

Shea Whigam is supposed to be in this - for some reason I don't remember him in the first episode
Yeah he's in this, but wasn't in the first episode.

I really liked the episode, but my first language isnt english so I had a little trouble with the accent.

Can anyone tell me why they investigate the little girl that "ran with her dad" and how it relates to the victim ?

Is it the same girl, or are they related ? Was she the mom ?

Gorgeous cinematography and some great acting.

On the downside, Rust can be pretty annoying with his cynicism. Thankfully Hart doesn't hesitate in telling him to stfu.

Can't wait for next ep.

It's not the same girl.
Different names, beside, the victim is 28, the lost girl would've been 15 (in 95).

I guess they just want to see if there's some correlation of some kind, i think they address the question at one point.

The implication, I believe, is that whoever committed the crime had likely done something like this before. Its specifics made Rust reach that conclusion.

As such, another girl who went missing years before in the same area might be just such a case.

Meh. Where's the fun in that? No anticipation, no discussion, no predictions, no buzz.
If you want to marathoon it you can just wait two months till it stops airing.

Anyway, loved the premiere. The show is slow burn, but damn it's such beautifully acted and directed, plus characters are really sympathetic.

It will live or die based on finale though.

They investigate that lead because an old man dropped her name out of nowhere ? Seems weird.

I see.... seems a little far stretched

Rust makes it a point to say how he thinks whoever committed this crime has done so previously. Then he sees the billboard as they're driving and he thinks to look into it since it was in the same area. Nothing far fetched about it!

Fantastic debut (can you really call it a pilot?) episode.

I was surprised at how funny a lot of the banter was, in a grim way. Hart reacting to the crazy shit from Cohle was great. Cohle's line about a fading memory of a town, and Hart's angry

As almost everyone has said, brilliantly acted all the way through. The best example to me is at the beginning, when Cohle and Hart are walking towards the crime scene. The flicker of changing expressions on their faces as the oddness/shock of the scene sets in as they realize the random murder is anything but.

EDIT: damn you superflous 'h'

The season is designed to complete the entire story. A second season would feature a whole new story with new characters, likely in a completely different part of the country. It's like American Horror Story.

Loved the first ep. Finally, a successor to The Wire, The Shield, and Breaking Bad.

This is how crime and suspense fiction should be. Dark, edgy, vague, uncomfortable.

So many crime/suspense shows and novels are just pathetic. The procedural formula has been an excuse to produce crap.

loved the first episode. can't wait to see how this plays out the rest of the way

also nice seeing brother mouzone and lester too lol

Fantastic first episode. McConaughey & Harrelson with some superb acting.

I didn't catch the question the detective asked Rust at the very, very end though because of the accent. Anyone know what he asked?

yep. think i'll prefer this over it too. we'll see how it unfolds though.

Some things in Hannibal were somewhat cheesy and pulpy, but overall, it was incredible mostly from a visual standpoint: Special effects, cinematography, sets, costumes.

I think going forward, this will separate from it even more; as i said before the premiere, i feel like this is going to be closer to Top of the Lake.

Just caught up on the premiere on HBO GO. Thought it was excellent. I figured it would have great performances (especially from Woody and McConaughey) but I was also really impressed by it visually. Hell, even the music was great.

It's almost weird now to think back on McConaughey's days as a mediocre romcom actor. Dude seems unstoppable lately. I just watched him the other week in Dallas Buyers Club and he was great in that also.

This was an excellent premiere. McConaughey played a completely different role than I was expecting and he was incredible (as he has been recently, what a complete turnaround from his early romcom days) and Harrelson was no slouch either. The plot was intriguing and I can't wait to learn more about these characters.

HBO did it again! They will always be the kings of incredible television.

Loved it. It's slow but I don't mind that, the atmosphere and mood is awesome. I also liked seeing Lester and Mouzone. I'm really excited to see what's going to happen.

Damn, loved this pilot. It looks fucking fantastic. Acting is great and they hooked me story wise. And then when you think it's over they throw The Black Angels in the mix, such a great band.
