Nintendo Has no Plans For 'Mario on Smartphones'

“The spread of smart devices does not spell the end of game consoles. It’s not that simple,” President Satoru Iwata said at a news conference Friday. The key is to figure out a way to use smartphones to make people aware of Nintendo’s games, and encourage them to try out the console version of the games, Mr. Iwata said.

“It doesn’t mean that we should put Mario on smartphones,” he said.

In the meantime, it is worth noting that Nintendo is beefing up its research and development budget, and that Mr. Iwata promises to surprise game players in the future. While there are plenty of unknowns, Nintendo isn’t saying game over to consoles just yet.

I don't know what investors are expecting to change strategically then if he's unwilling to even consider this yet. Price drops? That's not going to change what's going on. More Mario games? A rental service or something?

This seriously continues to show a real stubbornness that is going to continue to make 2014 impossible for them, and 2015 as well.

Anyone expecting legacy games and franchises from Nintendo on smart phones is delusional.

Lol Nintendo can't even get their games out on the VC and people are expecting them to start releasing it on mobile?

Lol

If nothing else, that's encouraging. Hearing Nintendo embrace smartphones is a bit worrying, but if they really intend to just use it to push complimentary products, I'm okay with that.

Just imagine playing Mario with virtual buttons...

Has nobody actually played an emulated Mario game on a cellphone? Controls are horrendous!

Lol

They CAN get their games out on VC (and have countless Mario games on VC, so uh...), they just choose not to because they feel that it encourages more sales if they have a drip, drop. I am sure they have the numbers to support that or something.

i don't think putting these games on smartphones will solve anything....

Maybe in 10 when they merge with Toyota.

Software is where they make the most money. It's where their greatest strength remains. Leveraging their properties on some of the biggest platforms on Earth can be a huge boon to profits if done properly.

It doesn't mean it has to be SUPER MARIO BROS. port to phones, but it can mean completely unique Mario games designed around the strengths of the iOS platform. And I can't imagine that wouldn't net a huge return for their investment.

Reggie even told Keighley recently or not too long ago that money aside, they want to give the gamer the best gameplay experience and that can only be done with real buttons.

exactly what I been saying, they dont even put them all on the WiiU and 3DS in a timely manner and people expect them to flood mobile with those games lol not happening

Nintendo hasn't been a competing company for awhile now, they'll continue to fade out to nothing at this rate, but ah well.

doesn't take a genius to tell that creating a retro Nintendo label on other platforms would in fact help them, but hey they'd rather nobody plays them than inferior western people that iwata hates so much.

They should make unique games for smart phones using their IPs to draw a larger audience who want a fuller experience to their main hardware. Even making companion apps to coincide with their main console game releases would be a start.

Like I said in another thread, they are a competent hardware manufacturer that can succeed in the home console market if they pay attention to what consumers want. The Wii was a smashing success, after all. It proves they are not irrelevant. After one failure everyone is clamoring for mobile, which to me, makes no sense to me. Nintendo just needs to shore up their hardware -- make it desirable to your average gamer. Do this and they will succeed.

People want to play Mario, they just don't want to have to spend $300 just to play Mario games.

Based on the speed to which they enact business changes or adapt to new technology when they do finally cave and decide to bring their games over this is the prototype they will be working with

When people say 'Mario on phones', they always seem to put it in a narrow context. Like, 'oh, Mario platformers? With iOS controls!? No way!', but I think people are saying the property itself should go there, not necessarily does it have to be a port of old games.

Think the Rayman running games (which were quite well received) as how Nintendo could leverage their IP without degrading the unique value of their software on their traditional platforms. A unique iOS Mario game designed around the strengths of the platform. A unique iOS Pokemon game designed around it. Pikmin. Donkey Kong.

The idea would be to bring people who are fans of these properties into the mix on those platforms, but in a unique way that is a testament to Nintendo's gameplay dominant design prowess. Not in a way that tries to emulate the Mario console experience.

Mario doesn't make sense. But Pokemon....

Woudn't make sense at all because it sells nintendo handelds and uses the tech inside them greatly. And would eliminate the need for pokebank entirely . Forcing everyone to start over from numero onu. Pokemon spin off thingy on the IOS, yeah sure i think they got one of those.

Actual pokemon? No. Buy a 3ds if you want it that much.

I thought I read a post around here that said the majority of their revenue has historically been from hardware sales?

Mario platforming games should never show up on smartphones, period. Keeping Mario off them entirely, however, is short sighted.

Not putting Mario on smartphones is like not making, ugh, a Mario anime. Which can be okay for the most part, but can also miss additional popularity from potential old and new fans / customers. Which is to say, seeing smartphones necessarily as a "different platform" is very short-sighted. It might as well be treated as a different medium altogether, and Nintendo never had anything against non-video game media.

I think there should be Mario in smartphones for the same reason I think there should be ads on TV, promotional campaigns and animations/prints based on video game franchises.

Eventually... Nothing against Nintendo or their model, but eventually, maybe once the current generation of their handhelds pass, maybe later. Eventually.

Come back here in 500000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 years >:)

Fixed it for you.

Mario doesn't make sense. But Pokemon....

Belong on a Nintendo handheld, I am not having Pokémon going on a crappy smartphone.

That'd be a shock to me. How great must the margins on their consoles be to offset endless millions of games being sold from third parties and themselves!? @_o

Some of you are going to be shocked at the rapid changes headed Nintendo's way in the next half decade. You guys are in for a true shellshock if you don't prepare yourselves.

Yoshi Touch & Go and Kirby Canvas Curse would be cracking smartphone games. As would Punch Out.

They could introduce hardware DLC! Start playing the game on your smartphone, unlock a Wii U with one small payment
of $299.99
to finish the adventure!

Man I can't fathom how just speeding up the process from the 2-4 below average weekly trickle to at least 6 games a week of value can possible hurt their sales at this point..

Haven't played a Nintendo game or system since skyward sword. Apparently I'm not really missing anything. If a few classics made it to mobile, I'd probably Bite. But until then I have no desire to play anything Nintendo.

Luigi endless runner incoming.

How terribly quaint. Someone should introduce the dude to a mouse & keyboard. Or, better yet, a Wiimote. I don't think it was the buttons that made that device resonate with a wider audience. A wider audience that went on to embrace touchscreens. Hell, their handheld only has one stick, is he suggesting that is 'the best gameplay experience' for games with a 3D camera? 'cause it ain't.

'The best gameplay experience' is going to differ from person to person.
