I didn't quite catch why Marty wanted to get the fuck out of his in-laws' place, and why he was rude to his father in law. Is it because he was yapping about rich guy problems?I did. It's just tough watching that, especially after the scenes at her parent's place. So dysfunctional.

Seriously read up on The King in Yellow

the closed captions of the two girls in the room was something like 'you know you're adopted right..."
huh...
my brother used to tell me that all the time.the closed captions of the two girls in the room was something like 'you know you're adopted right..."

I still think they lock someone up in the next couple of episodes but Rust does not agree that it is the killer. Its more of a political arrest to close the case and Marty is willing to tow the line but Rust isnt.
Instead, he keeps looking on his own and finally tracks down and kills the person who he really thinks did it (this is over the course of the seven years as partners with Marty after this case). He tells Marty but he doesnt agree with what he did, so their partnership ends.
Rust then leaves the force as he thinks his work is done. However, the new murder makes Rust realise that he got the wrong person so he cooperates with the new detectives in 2012 to find the killer.
The new detectives and Rust find the real killer, it turns out that it was the Sherriff with all the hunting trophies in his office (easy supply of antlers). When going back over the evidence, Rust realises that Marty had found it out earlier but covered it up along the way.
Marty then kills Rust to keep him quiet and his reputation.
This is just my speculation based on the first couple of episodes.

Wouldn't that be a reference to Cohle's daughter?
Edit:
I guess not if it's the parent that died in the car accident.
I thought the kids were just playing with their dolls but in a fucked up way where they are telling the doll its parents died in a car accident.
Are people speculating that one of his daughters is adopted?
Also while I get what they are going with Marty's character, it doesn't seem real to me. That girl he was with was super hot but his wife is gorgeous too and up until now other than her just being there we don't see why he is such an ass to her or her parents.
Kinda came out of nowhere. I hope they fill that in better.
My early theory was that Marty is behind the original killings and this new one. In the opening scenes of the first episode which dates do they show the 2 FBI guys interviewing Rusty and Marty?

What I don't understand about the doll scene supposedly being a representation of a car accident is why the doll on the ground is naked. Doesn't really seem like it matches up with the dialogue there
it's not always about being with a hot girl or not, it's about something new. when you are married to someone and you see them every day (the best and worst) day after day sometimes you just want something new and exciting.
now it doesn't hurt when something new and exciting is that delicious big tittied vixen he is banging
Well yeah I know that. I meant that so far from what we have seen and been told it just seems forced because his life doesn't seem shitty. Like an added "angle" just for the sake of having it.
Of course I don't mind cause dem titties but I hope they spend more time on the family since now they have hinted at problems without really showing us much.
well we see that her mom is just constantly nagging her "whats wrong whats wrong whats he doing what has he done" and the wife is probably sick of hearing about it. then he wants to randomly take off from their little weekend "getaway" probably to go put it in that one chicks pooper and the wife is kind of fed up after having the seeds planted by mom and then her husband is wanting to run off
I'm sorry I know you are trying to answer the question as best you can but I can't take you seriously with that avatar.
Anyway what's the Owl people are referring to in the Church?
I just remember the graffiti on the wall with the antlers and the girl. What owl?
There's an owl on the rafters when they first enter the destroyed church.Anyway what's the Owl people are referring to in the Church?

Doesn't sound like it was the first time this has happened, too. He also tells the story in the bar where he was hooking up early in his career and her roommate gets home. There's no telling if he was married at that point, but it sounds like something he's regularly involved with.I think the "problem" is Martin's fairly intense fling. All he seems interested in doing when not at work is banging Daddario's character. The wife senses something is up and he refuses to open up, hence the conflict.

It wasn't Rust and it wasn't Marty. Marty is too impulsive and severely lacking in the creativity and intelligence dept to pull off such an act. As for Rust it would be too obvious.
My best guess? They track the killer down but something very fucked up and supernatural takes place and the real killer gets off and due to mounting pressure from state government officials they pin it on someone that probably deserves to be in jail for other random stuff and who fits the profile but didn't actually do it.
Kids dolls are always naked.
I think its set uo to be a religious based cover up more than anything supernatural and the coverup from as up high as the governor. That in turn is what ruins their relationship and why rust leaves and the force.
Right, he doesn't seem to have any problem justifying it to himself in either the past or the present. And it's not something he's reflected on by 2012 and decided it was a bad idea, so it definitely sounds like it's always been there.
