Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition PC

Also this is how you do ports SQUARE. Watch and learn.
This is also another reason I'm so excited, make the competition understand what's required for super cash on Steam.

Then again, it's not released and it's fucking Capcom. I'm still super optimistic, cause, well, it's RE4.

now do the same for the first two please, they're the best ones.

I hope they put a little more effort into them, I want to collect some tough ones for my profile.

I sure hope so too.

Thoughts on this?

it would make no sense. Ubisoft handled that port. I doubt Capcom have access to the source code for it. If anything it is based on the PS3/360 code. Nothing else would make sense.

This person is probably unaware of the missing bump mapping in the PS3 360 versions.

ah but with Japanese PC releases, every day is opposite day.

and something is off with these screens. I don't think I see any upgraded textures and it actually all kinda looks not right.

Like the other PC version when you have mods installed...kind of an abomination. Only good looking if you have arbitrary taste that thinks more always = better. game didn't need shitty HDR.

OG Gamecube
PS2 (more content than the OG)
X360 (The best of those two. The extra content of the latest release + graphical update)

More content perhaps? Just a graphical update is not enough, specially priced @ $20.00
RE4 hasn't had new game content since the PS2 version, and it's since been ported four times now: shitty PC port -> Wii -> 360/PS3 -> and now Steam. Expecting new content for such an old game is kind of a stretch.

Opinions and all that, but I'm excited for the 1080p and 60 FPS. Considering I only played the Wii version (and only once. I didn't finish Separate Ways or play much Mercenaries), $20 is a good price point for me to try to enjoy the game again and actually finish Separate Ways. And since I'm a big Mercenaries fan but didn't actually play much of 4's back then, I'm excited to see how it compares to 5's and 6's.

After the screenshot comparisons earlier, it seems clear to me that this is based on the PS360 versions (with a few upgrades). Also makes the most technical sense in terms of porting.

Ubisoft did not handle the port. Their role was to distribute the game in EU/US. Capcom chose Sourcenext to do the port, same for DMC3 and Onimusha 3.

But yes, I agree, this person (which I indeed remember from the original RE4 modding community) probably does not know about the missing effects of the PS360 versions.

Better be based on the GC/Wii version. Why would they continue to ignore the best looking/playing version of the game?
Yeah, I'm curious about this, too. The GCN/Wii versions had some effects, etc, which were missing from the PC, PS2 and PS3/360 versions.

well whatever :P

Capcom's PC ports got a lot better after that batch, thank god. They've been reliably great since. Hopefully we can get the missing effects back on a much more open platform. I mean, hopefully we won't need to put up the Durante signal, but... there's a chance at least on PC.

Are the comparisons in this thread Durante?

I missed the first 500 posts or so.

60fps cap or a possible 120?

Also, why do people speak of bump mapping on the GC. IT did not have the capability to even do that from what I understand.. rather just a form of specularity on the models.

Yes. With (almost?) all the versions. All indications point toward it basically being the 360 version with double the FPS and some higher res textures (on characters at least).

First time on Steam in HD.

We have been playing the prior RE4 port and emulating the Wii version for a long time now. Unless they have completely forgotten about the original PC version, which is understandable.

The YT video is correct. An untweaked PC RE4 could only support the maximum resolution of 1024x768, which is obviously sub-hd (I have it installed on my PC right now, tweaked though).

Missing effects? So, Wii version through Dolphin + texture mods is still the definitive one? Are audio glitches fixed on recent Dolphin updates?

There are many types of bump mapping. EMBM is one that the gamecube could do it, for example. It's all over Monkey Ball.

So I'm guessing the Wii version had motion blur? Pardon my ignorance, I don't know the differences between the versions.

In the dolphin picture Leon looks like a man of action, in the PS3/Steam version he looks like a teenage heart-throb staring into the distance.

I don't know what else is missing.. In the screenshots that's a DoF effect that seems to be missing. But as you can see it didn't look good anyway.

if the controls are like RE5's option for having a moveable on screen cursor, if you pick up a Razer Hydra you will be able to play with WiiMote style controls. I replayed 5 on PC that way with my Hydra last year, and it was a blast. My fingers are naturally crossed that the same will be possible here.

I plan on doing this too. RE4 controlled so great with the Wii mote (although switching to a higher difficulty was necessary for balance) that it really bummed me out more games weren't made with the same control setup. I initially used a glovepie config to get the same controls for 5, but got tired of having to use Bluetooth and the sensor bar. The hydra is just easier to setup and 5/6 control beautifully with it, I'm really excited for 4 to give it another go.

Capcom has done good by the PC these last few years and I'm also happy that this release might mean the haven't given up and that sales are good. I know it's unlikely now we'll get a dragons dogma port but I really hope they update all their gfwl games to steamworks by June. They could release all the extra content for RE5 and repackage it so there will finally be a definitive edition of that game.

God Damnit

How many times are they going to make me buy this game. Twice on gamecube, once on the Wii, once on 360, and now a second time on PC. Game is just too good for me to pass up.

Also obligatory joke:

Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition PC - $0.33 per frame
Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition - $2 per frame

RE 4 wins

there is no definitive version. hopefully this new PC version will become definitive. Wii version on dolphin remains the best way to play it before this comes out, but this version will over take that just by running at 60 fps without any weird internal scaling. a few missing effects do not make up for that...

but there still will not be a definitive version unless the PC version can be updated with those missing effects (either officially or unofficially).

Judging by some of the info that's floating around, might wait for a secondary texture/model update to hit before I check this one out, but at least waiting for reviews first, because I'm scared of ports.

Also, watch this have GFWL.

Ok, some of us may feel that RE4 was the defining moment the series moved away from horror and the masterpiece of the REmake, but at the same time it's still a damn good game with some tense moments. I am so buying this at some point.

All signs point to it being based on the GC version. Just as it was for PS3/360. Why is the misinformation about these ports so persistent?

PS3 / 360 versions was based on the GC version, but not every effect made it across and some were cut. This PC version is based on the 360/PS3 version, so it too is missing those effects currently.

It's an important distinction.

Anymore comparisons between Dolphin, Steam, and PS3/360 versions?

I don't know what else is missing.. In the screenshots that's a DoF effect that seems to be missing. But as you can see it didn't look good anyway.

I noticed that sweater texture, far higher resolution than that in the PS3/360 and Wii version.

I think there are a couple of things that should be clarified (that if they arent can lead to confusion / conflicting information):

1. Is this based on the GC geometry? Answer seems to be that since it's based on the PS360 HD port, and since THAT was based on the GC geometry, then YES.
2. Does this include all of the GC lighting / visual effects? I haven't come across a definitive answer on this one (thought I havent read the whole thread), since I've read conflicting reports on whether the PS360 version included them. Can anyone clarify?
3. Are the cut-scenes pre-rendered videos or running real-time? I heard someone speculate from the size of the download that it's prerendered, but can anyone confirm??

Indeed, (this has been noted already), like they said they have upgraded some textures. I imagine environmental textures will be the same though, so hopefully the fanmade textures for the previous PC version can be ported over to this one.

Texel density on the models and ground sure likes like the sub-HD PS2 version to me. Fail to see the Ultimate part?

Please, if you have concrete information (such as screenshots) that pertains to the quality of the port that overrides what other posters have said already, please share it.

What are these effects? If it's just a little bit of reflective attributes and occasional bump mapping, then should we care? Are these effects widespread or limited to a few smaller use cases throughout the entire campaign?

I'd rather see it replaced with a better DOF effect than replaced with nothing. I'm buying eitherway mind, but a true definitive version of RE4 is long overdue.

they are minor things I wouldn't choose to buy or not buy the game over, however they are supposed to be there and the game loses a tiny part of it's charm without them.

Also, watch this have GFWL.

GFWL is dead and buried.

Store shutdown was last August, servers are going off in July. Many games have already received GFWL removal patches, and many more are getting the same treatment going forward.

Capcom hasn't released a GFWL game in a long time.
