Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

I don't know if all of that is even necessary. Wonder Red on his own is a pretty solid fighter. Wonder Punch, Wonderful Stinger, Wonderful Cyclone, Wonderful Rising, and more.
Heck, during his solo segments, Wonder Red can even use versions of stuff like Unite Guts (a big burst of energy that knocks stuff back).

I think Wonder Red could be a solid character worthy on inclusion even without his team.

Alternatively, they could use the Wonderful 101 as a replacement for the Fighting Polygons/Wireframes/Alloys. They already come in large numbers and with recycled movesets and character models. Perfect for the 100-man Melee/Brawl/Whatever.

Yknow I really like W101. If it was up to me Wonder Red, Wonder Blue, and Wonder Green would be their own indivual character as a "Star Fox Style" Trio. :) Pseudo-clones that share things like WonderGuts and WonderJump but have different specials corresponding with their arsenal.

But my TOP 5 for this game was this:

1. Villager (Confirmed!)
2. Palutena
3. Chibi-Robo
4. Balloon Fighter
5. Ridley

Its ironic that my first choice hurt the chance of my 4th. So bittersweet haha

They want Krystal. Luckily the volume of their voice has been lowered nowadays, because Krystal has drifted more and more into irrelevance, especially now that the whole "staff fighter" trope is very likely to be filled by Palutena, to top it off.

The Star Fox franchise in general is irrelevant, and deservedly so. The only thing keeping it alive at this point is the furry fandom. It's pretty ridiculous how Wolf has been given priority over other popular Nintendo villains like K. Rool and Ridley, but hopefully Sakurai wakes up and realizes that the DK series is important enough to warrant one or possibly two newcomers.

I actually agree with this, Star Fox really does get undeserve rep over certain franchise even though I do like the inclusions of all three Star Fox characters we have now.

However King K. Rool has a lower chance than someone like Krystal so don't kid yourself.

Ridley on the other hand is actually still relevant to his franchise, has a cool design, and is still till this day one of the most requested characters. No one really cares about King K. Rool after the Brawl train ended (same with characters like Geno), and Nintendo has made it clear they don't care about him either.

A while ago I thought of a way to include the Wonderful 101 series.

Their slot would be called Wonderful 101s.

Each color is a different main Wonderful One. So Red, Blue, Green, White, Black, Pink and Yellow would all be decided on whatever color you choose.

Now, here's the fun part. They all have the same basic moves, but when unite morphs are used they just form in whatever color you are.

So for example, I choose the green color.

I use Down B and I get a ground smash with a green hammer as opposed to the Yellow in the game. Final Smash could be Wonder Bomb, and that would come in Green too since I'm playing as Wonder Green.

I'm aware that I worded that ugly, but Yay or Nay on that?

I disagree. Star Fox is as much of a core franchise to Nintendo as other B-series are. It's Nintendo's main shmup series (even though 2 of the last 3 games weren't shmups, but at least one had shmup sections I guess).
Furthermore, the first 2 entries of the series are considered classics (especially the 64 game).

The only thing keeping it alive at this point is the furry fandom.

lol. You know I was making a joke, right? I sincerely hope this is a joke, too.

It's pretty ridiculous how Wolf has been given priority over other popular Nintendo villains like K. Rool and Ridley

Wolf has been intended to be included since Smash 64. He and 3 other villains were supposed to be on the roster since the very first iteration of Smash, but they didn't make it. Due to time/budget constraints Wolf (and the other 3) were dropped from development, and we ended up with the 12 character roster.
In Melee, Wolf was the first character to be considered to become the Fox clone, but Sakurai decided to use Falco because Falco was more visually different and also more popular than Wolf.
He finally was included in Brawl, after being in the making for the better part of a decade.

Here's my sources: 1 2

but hopefully Sakurai wakes up and realizes that the DK series is important enough to warrant one or possibly two newcomers.

Dixie was in development for Brawl but ultimately scrapped - we don't know exactly why (but probably deadlines). It's not unlikely that she will actually make the roster with this game, especially since she's getting revived with Tropical Freeze.

King K. Rool has drifted into irrelevancy as much as the Star Fox series has, if not more, given the fact we got a remake of SF64 on the 3DS. But they're both old timers who people fondly remember.

Star Fox will be brought back some day.

King K Rool gonna be replaced by that walrus dude in tropical freeze. Returns was kind of a reboot, from what I can tell.

Rool isn't popular because I don't like him!

To be quite honest. I don't want that, I really want platinum to take vanquish and a little bayo, and make some weird Star Fox mech hybrid that is actually good with flying section. Since Kamiya loves smups so much.

That is all I want and i get to play as wilf and just mess people up with claws on land.

Please lord please.

Not bad. I think it could definitely work.

Wow, I'm sorry. I spent five minutes trying to word that and still botched it.

If you could decide to ADD just one new character to the game (of your choice), who would you add?

Edit: holy shit, no matter how I word this I feel it'll be misinterpreted.
My left side brain says Ridley, my right side brain says WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

Metaknight is just a kirby in a mask in my book
That's exactly what he is. He is a blue Kirby.

Rool isn't popular because I don't like him!

You and me both know that this isn't the reason why people are saying that.

K. Rool has not received a single mention in DKCR, and is also not going to be mentioned in Tropical Freeze. The last game he was in was Mario Super Sluggers, which came out the same year as Brawl (i.e. 6 years ago), and not even as a team captain. His last appearance as actual antagonist was in the DK games for GBA and DS, both of which weren't platformers - both were puzzle spin-off games. Before that, he was the main antagonist of Donkey Kong 64, which came out in 1999. That's 15 years since K. Rool's last major role.
And one final thing to consider: K. Rool was not the character to be chosen to be the additional heavy character in Mario Kart Wii, that spot went to Funky Kong (who also was in Sluggers, for the record) instead - although both would've made sense, and it would've been the perfect opportunity to have K. Rool cameo.

It's pretty clear that K. Rool is a character who would be included for his legacy of being the main antagonist of the first 4 installments of the DK series, and because he seems to be a fan favorite for nostalgic people, but he certainly is not a character I would call important to the DK franchise anymore.

Dunno if that would work, it would create some oddities with the hitboxes with Yellow and Green if they are meant to be considered the "same character" I think Wonder Red using everyone's morphs by either different moves, or by changes stances would be less complicated to implement.

Nintendo's first hand held
NES rep
Literal peice of nintendo hardware.

I dunno that guy in those DK games that those times, might not rank up. Question, does japan even know what the fuck a K rool is? Did rare games even do well In japn, I honestly have no idea. Do they know of the killer groove?

I think he's fantastic! This blubbery mass of evil has an excellent design that brings a tear to my eye. K. Rool's a great villain as well, but I like that Retro is expanding the DK universe with some interesting new antagonists.

EDIT: He also wields a giant wooden shoehorn that spawns dragons!

Don't worry, he'll give the DK series two newcomers: Fucking Cranky Kong and one of the owl enemies from Tropical Freeze.

Don't play with my emotions!

Hmm, that would be a difficult trick to pull off and keep balance in the game. On the other hand, it would be kind of weird seeing Wonder Red wearing different colors as well. Hmmmm.

You and me both know that this isn't the reason why people are saying that.

I don't know... People that are fans of Rool are treated like they are drunk on King K. Krool-Aid somewhat often in this thread. Mostly by a small handful of loud posters, but still.

All of the DKC games have done well in Japan. And Rool was included in several official Smash Bros. fans polls. I'm pretty sure the Japan knows the Rool.

relevancy means nothing when it comes to Smash

Might not be relevant for us today, but here's why those characters were picked (aside from being unexpected choices that Sakurai seems to like):
Smash celebrates the entire history of Nintendo, and as such, Game & Watch makes absolute sense. Those were Nintendo's first dip into the production of video games.

ROB is very similar in this sense, as this peripheral basically represents the NES itself, with it the very first video game console that Nintendo produced, and it was the key to open the door to the US after the video game crash, and Nintendo's subsequent international success. Of course you can't make an actual NES console playable, so ROB is the closest to going there without being ridiculous like making an NES-mecha or something (although that would be awesome).

Ice Climbers, while being the stars of a decently successful NES game, have been chosen for one reason - they're identical and thus the whole twin-character mechanic was born. I can think of only one character who would've made sense with that, and that would've been Lolo and Lala, and those 2 have much less moveset potential than a pair using hammers and being able to draw from ice-based moves as well.
Basically, the ICs have been chosen almost solely for gameplay reasons.

The same goes for Jigglypuff, btw, I remember Sakurai saying in either the Smash 64 blog or in an interview that he picked Jigglypuff because he wanted a second flying character besides Kirby, and Jigglypuff was huge at that time.

While those characters are the "unexpected" choices that Sakurai made, they make a LOT of sense in retrospect. K. Rool is the main villain of a series that since moved on to other antagonists, and he also is not a very interesting character moveset-wise - what could K. Rool bring to the table that another big character doesn't already? Certainly not a new mechanic, because he's just a fat alligator.

Now, don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind K. Rool to be added to the roster, but I don't think that he is likely or as important to Nintendo as, say, Ridley.

I don't know... People that are fans of Rool are treated like they are drunk on King K. Krool-Aid somewhat often in this thread. Mostly by a small handful of loud posters, but still.

Now you know how I almost constantly feel in regards to Ridley. :P

Besides you dismissing some games, I don't have much to disagree with, if Rool was included in Smash for it would be because of his legacy.

Well I said as a major antagonist, yes? I know he also was in the Wii racing game (Barrel... Blast? Something with Barrels), and the music game, but those 2 are spin-offs. His appearances there have as much relevance as, say, Dry Bones' in the Mario spin-offs appearances. Does Dry Bones being a pretty regular character in Mario Kart, Mario Party and Mario sports games make it more likely he is included in Smash? Probably not.
Also, of course I didn't include the remakes of the DKC ports for the GBA. :P

Was he in any other games? I don't remember him being in any other games.

Is she still popular now? Wow.

Yes. Legacy popularity never goes away that easily - see K. Rool :P.
She's nowhere near as big as she used to be in the 90s, or as Pikachu, but she still is up there. Case in point, she got the new Fairy element in the new games. Not many other older generation Pokemon received that treatment.

Plus, her Smash appearances gave her much more staying power, as well.

I personally think that if K. Rool is added as a Newcomer it will be because:

A. One of the top most requested characters.
B. Represents a classic and significant villain of past DK games.

If he doesn't it'll be because of relevancy issues. (Which I don't think is that much of a factor when it comes to character choice)

K. Rool was the main villain in 6 games, 9 if you include the Donkey Kong Land games, and 13 if you count the remakes. But he didn't appear in DKCR therefore he is irrelevant and nobody cares about him and Japan hates reptiles and Miyamoto hates the Kremlings. Never mind the fact that Diddy didn't appear in Donkey Kong Jungle Beat and yet he was a playable character in Brawl. Wolf is a gray version of Fox who appeared in Star Fox 64, Star Fox Command, and Star Fox Assault, two of which were terrible games. Were his chances lowered because he was replaced by General Scales in Star Fox Adventures?

While those characters are the "unexpected" choices that Sakurai made, they make a LOT of sense in retrospect. K. Rool is the main villain of a series that since moved on to other antagonists, and he also is not a very interesting character moveset-wise - what could K. Rool bring to the table that another big character doesn't already? Certainly not a new mechanic, because he's just a fat alligator.

What other big character can throw a crown like a boomerang? What other big character can summon a rain of cannonballs? What other big character can shoot spiked balls and toxic gas out of a blunderbuss? What other big character can use a remote control to command electricity and fly around with a helicopter backpack? What would make K. Rool unique is that his battle strategy could revolve around projectile use, much like Samus and Fox, despite being a very large character. The agendas in this thread are insufferable, and I really hope Sakurai does the right thing in the end.
