Borderlands 4 - Reviews Thread

You're given a game to review for the general public. You admit the story is fine, the game is 'extremely generous', will keep players hooked and the gameplay is great.

But your grievance is that you personally don't find as much funny stuff as the previous games and thus you'll mark it down?

The gameblog makes it sound better than the score they give it. Less of the memey yapping in my ear is a.good thing.

Precisely.

Not enough "UH OH HE'S RIGHT BEHIND ME ISN'T HE" humor? Now I'm interested

"Borderlands 4 takes a turn that won't please everyone. In an attempt to satisfy some fans' requests, the developers have lost sight of the game's identity. It is less funny and striking than previous episodes"

10/10 review for me

Agree with you. What a bizarre review. This sounds like a Day 1 buy to me. Especially, with co-op with friends. A 7/10 rating? What the?

Come on man. Don't do this thing where you click the review with the lowest score and try to find reasons why it should be declared invalid.

This person has a different (and minority) opinion about their priorities for the game, big whoop. It happens with literally every game.

Damn, good review scores overall. This is the type of game I'll buy 4 copies of when it's on sale for $20, and give them to my friends for a weekend of co-op.

Oh, for sure. And like A acm2000 says, a 7/10 isn't a terrible score.
In the grand scheme of things, it won't affect the MC much. I just thought it was unfair to the creatives who made the game, and is a consistent issue I've felt with reviewers (not just in gaming) who forget their ultimate aim to to post a recommendation to a broad spectrum of potential customers and just focus on a personal peeve.

No Switch 2 release? Wth i thought this was supposed to come out this week on the 12th? (not that I was planning to buy on launch but still).

I have bl2 (and bl1/presquel on some of these) on Ps3, PSVita, Ps4, PS5, and Switch. All run fine, but I heard bl3 plays crappy. I know on ps4 it's menus were shit.
Hopefully bl4 has better responsive menus like earlier games and hopefully the story isn't so cringe as 3 was.

Great..., now I'm literally forced to buy a good game and play it... And here I thought my day couldn't get any worse.

I've been waiting for Borderlands to go open world for years. I'm looking forward to it. Borderlands to me is a comfort food game. Play too much of it I get bored quickly, but play it every few years and it hits the spot. Every Borderlands to me is the same, I play it, enjoy my time with it for a while, by the end I've totally had my fill and have no desire to touch it again.... until the new one comes out in a few years. But excited about the changes this time around maybe it can make it stay its welcome more for me this time around.

Upper 80's was about my guess. They'll never top BL2 ever again

I'm waiting on my friends getting it, but with that being the case I think I'll just wait for the switch 2 port next month

It's already on mixed on steam and dropping due to dogshit performance. Guess my friend was right to wait since his PC sucks. We'll prolly play this next year. No rush.

46% user score on Steam. With people talking about bad performance.
Journalist giving high scores to a game with so many performance issues, are just helping a company scamming gamers.

PC journalists have no idea what the word performance is. Theyd play at 30 fps and still call it fine.

Context here is important. Weren't reviewers only sent PC codes? That doesn't reconcile with what you're asserting as some kind of gaming press cover-up.

Except technical experts/ outlets like Digital Foundry. Otherwise yes, this is very much true. Agree that outlets who aren't knowledgeable on the technical side should stop trying to be.

If they only got PC codes, then scores should be much lower.
This is a clear lack of integrity from gaming journalists. Once again.

Why would the scores be lower? The main criticism is the poor performance on consoles, which they didn't play on for reviews. They played on high-end PCs with higher framerates. :pie_thinking:

Yep o was this close 🤏 to pick it up on PC but I'll pass. Even on switch 2, game key card can f*ck off but that's another subject.

You are missing the part where the PC version runs like crap. That is why it has a user score of 46% on Steam.
Which was to be expected, considering the game uses 2 DRM systems with a rootkit.

Lawd. If I get this down the road, and I'm sure I will, I'll just get it on console.

Well obviously not, though. But I wouldn't score corrections from you since you didn't play it for review. I also don't want a review of a game's technical issues unless they're egregious. The vast majority of game press are writers and they write critiques, they aren't technical experts. That's for outlets like Digital Foundry. I want reviews of games to review the content and critique that, so long as it's in a playable state, obviously. I don't want a major outlet to spend their review trying to talk about frame-pacing and particle effects and DLSS and lighting that they frankly don't know anything about. Review the game. And if you want to see under the hood on the technical stuff, look out for the Digital Foundry review. Technical issues can be (and frequently are) patched and addressed. Game content itself is not, which is what these reviews are for.

DF aren't tech experts.
And its not difficult to run a frame rate counter on a PC game. AMD, Nvidia and Intel have them with their drivers. Or just install msi afterburner.
Worst yet, performance is so bad, people don't even need to that, as they can feel the low frame rate and stutters. This adversely affects gameplay in a big way.
A gaming journalist that ignores major performance issues are plainly incompetent.

Digital Foundry aren't technical experts in the context of console and PC games and how they run on their native hardware? :pie_thinking:

Not really. Plenty of do analysts in greater depth. And with better testing methodology.
But don't worry, I'm sure Alex from DF will also make a video showing how the performance is in BL4.
It doesn't take a genius to run a frame rate counter on PC.

Well that's certainly a take.
